Are You Keeping Up With The Changes on Social Sites?

Changes On Social Sites Keep On Changing

social network changesEveryday you go online and see new changes on social sites. It can be daunting to keep with changes on social sites on a daily or even weekly basis. One day you go on Facebook and the next day you go back to do the same thing and the function is gone. Has that ever happened to you?

Facebook’s Latest Changes

changes on social sitesFacebook often make changes quicker than some of us change our underwear or on Google + where they are trying to compete with the ever changing Facebook.

Facebook now employs over 17,000 people. So they can move fast making changes as they see needed today.

Facebook Algorithm Updates

This is the biggest and most often change on the social network Facebook. One day you see your friends posts and the next day they disappear. You wonder if your friends left Facebook. According to Entrepreneur Facebook likes posts the most with a lot of shares, comments and likes in a short period of time. So if your posts are not getting this type of action your friends may NOT see your post.

Facebook’s goal is to show you posts that matter the most to you. They personalize what you see now. They are focusing on the user experience to keep people on their network for longer period of time. (This of course will help them sell more ads on their network to serve to them.)

They assign relevancy scores to each story you read, comment on, etc. Whether it is from your friends or a Facebook page. If you watched the video from Entrepreneur the Facebook developer there tells us to experiment on Facebook. Facebook changes so fast that what works today may not tomorrow!

See First Feature on Facebook

You can set your news feed preference to see things first from your favorite friends and pages.

Facebook news feedFirst go to your News Feed Preferences: (use the arrow down top right hand corner of your Facebook profile)

Next click on it to see your Facebook news feed preference. Then you can choose what you want to see first in your news feed. This is where you may want to eliminate those that post things you don’t want to see, political, promotional, offensive etc.

You get to choose your preferences.

Facebook Preferences

Note that you can unfollow people vs. unfriending them on Facebook. You can even reconnect with them if you forgot that you did unfollow someone from years ago. This feature really can personalize your Facebook newsfeed just for you. You can choose what to see first and from who when you log into the network.

Twitter Changes on Social Sites

Twitter’s biggest change was their character count increase. They increased their character count from 140 to 280!

Twitter users can do a lot more with this recent social network change. People can tag more people in one tweet and share longer quotes and info.

Twitter Lite

Twitter just announced on their blog this new feature. It is a new mobile web experience that minimizes data usage, loads quicker on slower connections, and is more resilient on unreliable mobile networks. They found those that use it receive 50% more engagement on the network! I went to look for it on my Android and it’s not available to me yet 🙂 but beware of fake ones. I made a screenshot of the real Twitter Lite app and added it to my wishlist.  (See below).

Quora’s Recent Update

Quora now lets your pin your favorite answer to your profile page. This came just last week as I was on the social network answering questions. It flashed on their mobile app and I quickly added one and then changed it later. You can update this at anytime to feature your best answers. I love this social network change.

I wrote about Quora on Proven SEO earlier this year and it now has become in my top 10 traffic sources here at Inspire to Thrive.

Snapchat Redesign

Snapchat too recently got on the bandwagon in a big way. They are taking the media out of social with their network. You can read more about this new update rolling out soon at Janice Wald’s place as I wrote a new piece all about it. (Hint, December 16!)

LinkedIn Updates

Their biggest update this year was that they no longer displays work anniversaries and birthdays of your connections in your LinkedIn feed. Instead, you’ll receive these updates on the Notifications page. Do Note: Turning off the option to share profile edits eliminates notifications about changes to a member’s profile to their network.

The Pinterest Updates

Pinterest has become more like Google and Facebook with their marketing applications. They now offer search solutions are available through the Pinterest Ads Manager.

According to Pinterest there are over 2 billion search done on their social network every month. That’s billion with a B! Imagine trying to get a piece of that pie. Even 2% would be a lot of traffic for any of us to generate at our blogs or small businesses.

Tailwind for PinterestI’ve recently been drawing more traffic via this social network with their Tailwind app and Tailwind Tribes.  It is similar to Triberr with how it works and brings referral traffic this way. You can be part of my tribe here for a 30 day free trial.

In addition Tailwind offers a program for Instagram too! More to come on this app and what it can do for your blog or small business traffic with Pinterest.

Google Plus – More Changes on Social Sites

The most recent thing I’ve read on this social network is that they are working on fixing an issue with porn spam. have you encountered this on the network yourself? I haven’t been using this one often. Maybe a few times monthly. (We cannot spread ourselves out too thin with social media!)

YouTube Recent Update

YouTube has come up with an update to stop the app on your mobile device from killing your battery. Phew, I bet a lot of you are happy about this one!

Of course Youtube has some recent algorithm changes which is no surprise as they are owned by Google. You can read more via Adweek on what this means for those that use YouTube.

If you want to master YouTube do follow Ms. Ileane as she’s the blogger queen of YouTube today!

InstagramLet’s Not Forget Instagram’s Social Network Changes

Not but not least is Instagram.
They recently let users add to old stories and expand upon the stories. Being able to add older content is huge for Instagram stories.
Not only can you change stories but now you see on your desktop for Instagram. Therefore these can use these Instagram features on your desktop too.

Lastly Instagram is testing a new feature called Stop Motion Camera. This will allow you to take a series of photos and assemble them into a video. I can’t wait to try this one out!

Ultimately how do you keep up with the changes on social sites today?

  • Hi Lisa,

There are so many changes every time. Just when I think that I figure something out, something else changes.

Glad to see that you’re loving Pinterest. I’ve been using it for a while and am starting to see more traffic to my blog.

There’s always something to learn and that’s why I make it a point to only focus on 1-2 platforms at one time.

There’s no way that I would be able to learn everything.

Thanks for sharing, have a great day 🙂

    Susan

    • Hi Susan, Oh yes, you are right – once you figure it out – it changes! I am because of Tailwind. It makes it easy to schedule and be part of tribes – just like Triberr 🙂 You are welcome.
I appreciate your coming by Susan and have a wonderful weekend.

  • Hello Lisa,

    Good shout over here 🙂

Social media indeed is changing a lot, and if one wants to be in the race then they must patch up with the changes.

Sometimes its not possible to be present on every single platform. We need to be act as a super humans in this hybrid
world. Good to know about the Twitter lite version. As getting in use with the real version creates a lot of loading problem
    through the cell phones.

    Thanks for the share.

    Shantanu.

    • Hi Shantanu, thank you! I love your hybrid world theory 🙂 There are so many to be on and know about. We can’t be experts on all of them but just a few 🙂 I can’t wait until the Twitter Lite version is available on my Droid.
Thanks for coming by Shantanu and have a great weekend ahead.

  • Hey Lisa,

There are many social media platforms and sometimes it’s really hard to step along every every one of them. Facebook has upgraded its algorithm and people are n’t really concerned of it.

Glad to see that Twitter users are free to add more characters now. It can be a great step to improve the marketing strategies.
    Thanks for sharing with us.
    ~Ravi

    • Hi Ravi, I so agree! It can really be overwhelming. Since this post, Twitter made another change with allowing tweets to be threaded together. Google has expanded their meta description counts, and it goes on and on…..I do like the longer tweet option now. I can tag more people in a post and tweet out longer quotes.
Thanks for coming by Ravi and have a wonderful Thursday ahead.

  • I’m not sure how I feel about the Twitter character limit increase. On one hand, I’ve been frustrated many times when writing a tweet and running our of characters. But the whole point of Twitter was brevity… and letting people fit entire blog posts into a tweet takes away from that. I suppose it doesn’t matter that much though since people are already getting around it by creating massive chains of tweets to post their “epic” diatribes, which are probably one of the most annoying things I’ve ever encountered on social media. They should’ve removed the ability to reply to your own tweets when they increased the character limit.

    • Hi Shaun, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. I hope you change your gravatar to an image. I almost sent this to spam but saw you have a legitimate website 🙂 Go here to do it: https://en.gravatar.com/
I too thought like you on the character count but I’m liking it more each day. I love that I can tag more people in tweets and tweet out longer quotes and such. I’m read that many are saying they are getting more engagement with longer tweets. I will be testing that more in the coming weeks. Stay tuned, I hope to do a follow up on it.
Thanks for coming by and have a great rest of the week Shaun.

  • Hey Lisa,

Google Changes, the Social Media Platforms change and we try to cope with this everchanging world. Not easy, but we’ll try 🙂
Which do you think is the most important change we should take into cosideration, the one that has the biggest effect to content creators?
Marios Tofarides recently posted..What Not Do When Publishing An eBookMy Profile

    • Hi Marios, nice to see you here 🙂 You are not kidding! I just read about the latest on Google changing their meta descriptions to longer versions. That will keep webmasters and bloggers working for a long time now. They say it will not impact rankings but it could on click-throughs to the sites.
That’s a tough question Marios, it depends on which site you get the most from and the one you use the most. For me right now it was Pinterest as the Tailwind upped my game there a lot! For others it could be Facebook or Twitter. Stay tuned!
Thanks for coming by and have a great day Marios.

  • Hey Lisa,

Thanks for bringing this up! Seriously, among all the chaos it is so hard to keep up with the changes. However I do look out for such news/notification.

The Twitter character count came as a good news to me though. Thanks for helping out with the other updates 🙂

    Cheers,
    Jane.

    • You are welcome Jane. It is hard! I just saw today Twitter has a new thread update – you can easily thread multiple tweets together. They are coming fast and furious with changes. Thanks for coming by Jane and have a wonderful day!

  • I love that Twitter Lite update Lisa because even on my phone, the loaded or fuller version of Twitter is just too heavy sometimes. I would use it more – than I even do – if it didn’t crash or flat out freeze due to the heavy-ness of the app, on my phone. Gotta see if it’s available to me yet because I too am an Android user. When it goes live, I am all over it and yep, I will be engaging and chatting and tweeting even more because I genuinely do enjoy using my phone for light text work. The Chromebook is all about the writing. Thanks for the helpful updates.

    Ryan

    • Hi Ryan, I’ve been fortunate I haven’t had an issue like that but being able to save on battery life would be very nice! I am having an issue with Instagram, it doesn’t let me use more than 2 or 3 hashtags – they disappear after I put them on! Not sure if it is my phone or the application. I’ve rebooted and everything.
Thanks for coming by Ryan on this one and have a great day ahead there!

  • Hello Lisa,

Awesome post. I am a Big Fan of Facebook and Twitter and using both of them for my social media promotion. These sites are a great place for networking and helps me to drive traffic to my blog. Facebook frequently made changes and I love them all. Thanks for sharing these updates. So, helpful.

    Have a great day 🙂
    Vishwajeet

    • Thanks Vishwajeet. Are you able to use the Twitter Lite version yet? I’m still awaiting its availability here. Did you change your preferences on Facebook? I appreciate your coming by and have a great day!

  • Since I have signed up for many alerts of google trend to closely monitor the changes around my world. But I was not able to preferably spend time on it, at that time I would like to take a look at your blog post and check the major changes. The way of explaining the changes in a simple way is really good to know it

    • Hi Arugmugam, Oh yes Google alerts are nice but you have to sift through them. I do try to keep it simple here – that’s one of my main goals with this blog – so anyone from beginner on up can understand what the posts are about and how they can benefit from them. I try to help others learn from mistakes I’ve made. And boy have I made mistakes. But that’s how we learn right? Thanks for coming by and have a great day!

  • Hi Lisa,
First of all, I want to use this avenue to say a BIG thank you to you for featuring me your article. It is an honor that I’ll forever appreciate. I’m so humbled, thank you.
When you wrote your article about Twitter’s 280 character for all users, I commented on the subject, saying I wouldn’t know if it’s a great idea as it is still very new.
I got used to the 140 character that i could not immediately say the 280 is best. However, we are beginning to see the benefits of the Twitter 280 character update which allows for more information as seen on my featured Twitter feed and others as well.
As for updates about other social sites like Facebook, Pinterest, etc, I’m aware of some, not all. I haven’t been a regular on Quora, but after reading Lilach Bullock’s post on SEMrush blog about the amazing benefits of Quora including its potential to drive massive traffic to your blog, I’m all set to make it a priority.
The fact that Instagram now allow users add to old stories is a great update because it makes possible for user to expand their horizons with older content in stories.

Thanks for putting this awesome posts together.

    • Hi Moss, oh you are very welcome! Yes, I’ve been reading more about the 280 characters and seeing it does work wonders.
One thing I can tell you about Quora, stay with it! Don’t give up, I almost did and then the traffic came. It took a good 6 months of answering questions daily there. It’s fun, like a crossword puzzle for me to do. I’m also finding that with Inbound.org too. Love the community there.
I have to play more with Instagram, I love taking nature shots, it relaxes me and I use Instagram for that with a little blog promotion too now. I hope to post about it in the upcoming year.
Congrats again on your new place Moss and have a wonderful rest of the weekend there! Thanks for coming by and commenting here.

  • Hi Lisa,

Wow…You sure did your homework for us and put it all in one place. A big thank you to you my friend.
Out of all these changes all I knew about was Twitter.
Being new on Pinterest, this really helped me out. I am so glad that LinkedIn doesn’t prompt us for birthdays and stuff like that anymore. It was getting a bit too much lol.

When it comes to Facebook, they do change more than our underwear he he he. I like the fact that we can now choose how we want to see our newsfeed. That will make life easier. I also like all the changes they have made. Thanks again for pointing it out.

    -Donna

    • Thank you Donna. Really – you are new on Pinterest? I have been on it for years but more recently with Tailwind. I love it, it reminds me of Triberr but for Pinterest.
I agree with you on LinkedIn. Too many notifications are overkill.
Hold on to your pants Donna, they may change it all again soon 🙂 It is amazing how frequently they are changing things there on Facebook. They must be testing hourly for their algorithms to make more money off their ads.
Have a great day Donna and enjoy the pretty snowfall out there! We got about 4″ here.
      Thanks for coming by.

  • Lisa,

Thanks for keeping me up to date! 😉

    All the Best,

    Martin

  • Hey Lisa!

    I’m trying to keep up!

I’m currently only using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

You are right about facebook, they have updates left and right often.

This is the first time I’m hearing about the stop motion feature instagram is coming out with.

    Thank you for sharing!

    Cheers! 😀

    • Hi Freddy, I know it’s not easy! You are most welcome and I can’t wait to try that one out on Instagram as well as trying Lite for Twitter when available to all users. Facebook keeps on changing….Thanks for coming by and have a great rest of the day there Freddy.

  • Woww… Lisa Such interesting post.

It’s good to know about Stop Motion Camera in Instagram, It seems quite amazing, I’m also dying to try this one… LOL :D, In facebook, news feed preference is a such great option, I do know in which we can unfollow people to hide their posts, but i saw now, we have some other options too in preference It’s really good.
I love to read this, Keep sharing these kinda posts. Have a good day 🙂

    • Hi Maria, thank you. Yes, I can’t wait to try that one as well Maria on Instagram. I love keeping people in lists on Facebook too, easy to find things that way like with Twitter lists. But with Facebook you can post to your lists only but remember if their friends see it- it can still spread all over Facebook. I’m so glad you liked this one Maria, thanks for your shares too. Have a wonderful rest of the week.

  • [ Smiles ] Honestly, I haven’t been keeping up with all of these social media updates.

Thank you for keeping me abreast of what is going on in the world of social media.

    • Hi Renard, you are welcome. It changes so fast that it is not always easy to stay on top of it all. That’s why I took the time to redo this old post. The only thing that remained the same was the graphic of the Facebook underwear. Thanks for coming by Renard and have a great day!

  • Thanks for letting me know Shilpa. Will be checking it out!

  • For what it is worth: De WordPress upgrade I did to 3.3.2 it seems to interfere with the Suffision theme’s setting involving Google Analytics. now when I do an adjustment to the theme’s settings (tweaking, the way it looks etc.) the ‘link’ to my Analytics account goes wrong and I have to manualy copy and paste the code from the Google page to the theme. Weird. I got the RSS working now and some other things, but… there’s always more to be done.
The speed of software – updates is crazy. Google+ has options added (or deleted) on a daily basis, almost. I work in ICT and before I can do these kind of things (updates / changes in functionality) ‘the user’ has to agree first.
But they are paying for the service, we don’t for Google+, Facebook, Twitter and the likes. That’s part of the difference… 😉

    • Thanks Jan and for the help via Twitter. I should have deactivated plug-ins first before the upgrade. I fixed some last night over our Twitter discussion and the feed is now okay – Mayura figured it out with the publicize – I had it turned off – what a stupid mistake! Not sure when I did that or why. Must have been clicking where I should not have been 🙂 There definitely is always more to do!

  • crap don’t mention facebook and changes to me. i’m so sick of it. 3.3.2 caused me ranking and crawl error issues. i had to remove sexy bookmarks and is this socialable the plugin i use? cause that’s gonna suck eggs. girl you definitely do a great job at keeping up. love you for this. thanks. feedburner…i only posted today because i’ve been busy with gigs and figuring out how to layout the blog for the consolidation, so i haven’t noticed if my feed was broken. i’ve heard about feedblitz, definitely time to check them out!
vanita recently posted..Why I Will Not Comment On “Big Blogs” AnymoreMy Profile

  • What? More fb changes? Do so it’s so! Ugh!

I haven’t had any feedburner issues so I can’t help you there. Sorry Lisa. Hope whatever it is get’s fixed soon. :/
Brenda Lee recently posted..I can’t get away! 🙂My Profile

  • Wow… list of updates 🙂 I’ve heard FeedBlitz is another fantastic web feed management service with more customizable features. But I’ve never tried it Lisa 🙂 I love the way how FeedBurner works for me. And no cost at all. If you love social media then you gotta be dynamic 🙂 Social media is always subject to changes. Lately I’ve seen Google+ and Facebook copying each other. Facebook image size is one of it and Google+ redesigned. Today Google+ released a new Share button like Facebook Send button too ~ https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/share. However I love changes and competitiveness 🙂 That’s why I love social media. But it would better if they come up with unique features for each one. I think Pinterest does great job in this scenario 😉

    Cheers…
