10 Valuable Tidbits About Twitter Celebrating It’s 10th Year

Twitter Celebrating It’s 10th Year – What You Should Know

Twitter CelebratingTwitter – It all began just over 10 years ago. An all day brainstorming session by the board of directors at Odeo (a podcasting company) where Jack Dorsey was an undergraduate student worked. It was there that a short message service idea was born.

Twitters name at first first was twtt. It meant “a short burst of inconsequential information”.

Twitter wasn’t sure of itself in the very beginning, was it a social networking site or a microblogging system? As time went on it also become an information network as well.

Today folks still wonder what Twitter actually is.  Many have struggled to learn how to use Twitter while many others have embraced it and used it in all 3 ways.

The 3 Ways of Using Twitter

  1. A Social Network,
  2. A Microblogging system and
  3. An Information Network at it’s best.

It was 10 years ago today the first ever tweet was sent out by one of it’s founders Jack Dorsey.

10 Valuable Twitter Tidbits as Twitter Celebrates 10 Years!

  1. Making Twitter More Useful – The Wall St. Journal’s post on Twitter being more useful was recently published with some great ways to use Twitter more as a news network. Many Twitter non-users really miss out on this one Twitter feature.
  2. Twitter is Sticking With 140 Characters YAY!  I was very excited to read this latest news about Twitter. I think they listened to their active users on this one. It was back in January 2016 when rumors were flying around about Twitters 140 character count being expanded on. This will keep Twitter as a microblogging system.
  3. Personalized Twitter Timelines Are Now Available. –  You can go to your settings under Content and check off the box for “show me the best tweets first”. These tweets were chosen by Twitter based on accounts you interact with most, Tweets you engage with, and much more. You can uncheck this box at any time to go back to the original Twitter timeline if you want.
  4. GIF Images – You can now post with GIF images on Twitter. This is a recent change to the Twitterverse. It’s only been a month and Carol from The Wonder of Tech explains in her post how you can easily do it yourself now. Another good reason for Twitter celebrating today.
  5. Tweet Deck for Windows Going Away – For those of you I know that use TweetDeck via Windows, it will be going away come April 15. You will be able to use the web version. They will also no longer requiring users to log in to TweetDeck separately. That is, if users have the Twitter website open and are already logged in, they’ll be able to skip the log-in process on TweetDeck.
  6. Can you guess the most popular hashtag on Twitter? It is #FF (for follow Friday) and has over 539 million mentions according to recode.net. That hashtag has been around quite some time. It is a great way to thank your followers on a Friday.
  7. Twitter Predicting Hurricane Damage. If you are a Hurricane watcher you may be interested to know how Twitter is becoming in the forefront of predicting hurricane damage via Science.og. Their article Twitter can predict hurricane damage as well as emergency agencies explains.  I know when storms come around my area, Twitter is the first place I go to.
  8. Twitter MomentsThese have been around for a few months now but it really makes them more focused on news on the following categories; news, election 2016, sports, entertainment and fun. They do add in other specials like NCAA when it’s current. It makes it so much easier for you to follow events as they happen.
  9. Twitter Lists. I am so glad Twitter has kept this feature the same for us. They had expanded how many we can have over the years. If you are still not using them – read this and set some Twitter lists up today! They will make you a Twitter power user.
  10. Twitter Anticipation – What will be next for Twitter in the coming years? Will Twitter continue to evolve and change or will they keep many of the features as they are now? There are so many articles today on Twitter’s demise but Twitter continues to stay in the top 5 of the social networks that people log into day after day.

  • Hey Lisa,

I’m thrilled for Twitter. Although we had a rough start with the platform. Was always using some shady bots to get fake followers and it always results in suspension! That was years ago though.

A lot has changed since then.

Thanks for the valuable tips. Enjoyed them 🙂

  • Lisa: I started to use Twitter in 2007. It is my favorite social media tool / platform. Thanks for the reminder. I will send a belated birthday greeting to Jack & Co.! 😉

  • Hi Lisa,

Wow, I can’t believe Twitter has been around for ten years. Time sure does fly.

Thanks for sharing these tidbits with us. I’m not into sharing GIFs but I do like seeing them…glad Twitter is allowing them now.

Ah yes, I remember #FF. I need to get back to that to show some Twitter love to my tweeps. 🙂

You reminded me to get my Twitter list together. I’d been meaning to do that but it always gets pushed back.

Great share Lisa. I’m glad Twitter is here to stay. It’s good to know they’re keeping the 140 character limit but I wouldn’t mind it if they increased it to 150. 🙂

Hope you’re having a great week so far!

    • Hi Cori, you got that right 🙂 You are welcome. I like seeing GIFS in the Twitter stream and must remember how to take them once again. I remember Google allowed some photos to become GIFS but I haven’t noticed that lately. You are the second person to say that about going to 150 characters. It will keep us creative and our minds working more to squeeze them into the 140. So far it’s been a good week, I cannot complain. I hope the rest of yours goes well too Cori. Thanks for coming by and for your input on this one.

  • Hey Lisa,

I got the coolest email yesterday from Twitter about their 10th birthday. I thought that was so neat actually… Wow, 10 years already and I believe I joined them in 2008.

I’m SO happy they’re sticking with the 140 characters although I wouldn’t mind seeing them go to 150 characters. Not asking for much, some people can’t help but add those REALLY long headlines and it’s hard to cut them down at times.

I always loved using the windows version of TweetDeck but sometime last year I just wasn’t able to log-in anymore. It just refused to let me in so I had to go to the web version. They improved it though, it wasn’t the same as the windows version before so I’m now used to using that. I just hated having so many darn tabs open that’s all.

Glad they’re moving forward though and actually listening to their users. Too bad they don’t listen about everything but we can’t win them all. LOL!!!

Thanks for the latest news my dear and have a terrific week.

    • Hi Adrienne, me too, I thought that was neat that they sent an email out to their users. You were on a year before me 🙂 Me too, phew. I did NOT want to see long tweets, that is the beauty of Twitter- short and sweet!
Do you use Hootsuite or the Buffer Adrienne? So many tools to choose from using with Twitter. I do give them credit for listening to this one. I hope you are having a great week Adrienne and thanks for stopping by here.

      • Hey Lisa,

Well as you know I use TweetDeck for Twitter itself but I use Buffer to schedule my tweets. I just didn’t like Hootsuite, could never get used to it and TweetDeck offered some things that Hootsuite didn’t so I’ve just always stuck with that one and then of course have been using Buffer for a number of years now.

Thanks for sharing this information with us Lisa and more good news from Twitter.

  • Great news Lisa – thanks for keeping us updated! So pleased that Twitter are sticking with 140 characters!

I like the personalised timeline option too, what do you think? You’re never going to see everything on the timeline so it may as well be the ‘best bits’. The Twitter List options give you more control for specific content.

    Thanks for the updates!

  • Hi Lisa,

I’m so happy to hear that Twitter is NOT expanding past 140 characters! Shew! I wasn’t going to like that too much. I use web version Tweetdeck and flip between it and Hootsuite. I like the colors better on Tweetdeck, depending on the day. 😉

As always, thank you for sharing some awesome Twitter news with us. Twitter is still by far my fav platform. I just wish I had more time to network on it.

    Happy Monday!
