12 Things That Happen in a Twitter Minute and More

What happens in a Twitter minute and what is Twitter coming out with next?

Twitter Minute

Have you thought about what happens in a Twitter minute and why not all of your tweets are seen by your followers? It is amazing to see these Twitter stats below of what really happens in just one Twitter minute. In just 60 seconds these 12 things are quite astonishing. I was most amazed at how many new users sign up in one minute alone! If you are not yet on Vine you may want to check out the stats on videos from Vine being tweeted in just one minute.

Twitter Drives Traffic too!

The other very interesting tidbit that comes from these stats is how many website views in just a Twitter minute come right from Twitter alone. Getting unique visits from Twitter is why Twitter a must if you have a website or blog. It really can drive some traffic to your site.

Twitter and Search

Everyone thinks search is all Google but Google has 2 million searches per minute and Twitter is close behind with 1.4 million per a Twitter minute. That’s a lot of searching going on via Twitter alone!

Check out the 12 stats on a Twitter Minute on this infographic. I’d love to know which surprise you the most in the comments below!

What Happens in a Twitter Minute?

What Is Twitter Doing New Next?

You may have read about some upcoming changes Twitter is working on in the coming months:

  • Native Video – Twitter will be coming out with native video. You will be able to shoot and share video directly on Twitter in the coming year.
  • Relevant Tweets – Twitter is experimenting with sharing relevant tweets in your timeline, even if you don’t follow the users.
  • Instant and Personalized Timelines for New Users – This is another new thing Twitter is testing out for the new year. It may be a great way for new users to get used of the Twitter interface a little quicker. So many people I’ve talked to over the years don’t get Twitter – which is why I’ve published an ebook for Twitter Users to learn to use it more proficiently.
  • Ability to Share Tweets Privately via Direct Messages –  This one does not sound so new to me as you can use DM’s (direct messages) now on Twitter. Too many users take advantage of these and spam a lot via messages. I sure hope Twitter finds a way to clean them up! Did you know you can now share URLS via DM’s? That is new. Just beware of those nasty spammers.

Twitter claims they will be listening to our feedback so don’t be afraid to tweet them about any of these proposed changes. After all we are it’s users!

  • Hi Lisa,
thanks for the update on whats new on twitter, I must confess that i have been enjoying massive traffic from twitter lately after learning a few things about the platform and implementing them. I know by 2015 i will enjoy far better traffic .I like the way twitter is making their platform rich for marketing and trying to improve by the day.

    Thanks for the info

  • That point about the number of searches on Twitter is worth remembering. People are using it just like Google in that they’re typing keywords into that search bar. So you should try to be mindful of those “SEO” aspects when tweeting, too. (Actually in a way it’s better than Google because it’s so much quicker!)

Also, tweeps often use hashtags to search. I have found these can help a lot of you choose well, and don’t overdo them.

  • Hi Lisa,

Thank you for writing awesome post at 12 things that happen in a twitter minute and more! It is the truth and nothing but the truth!I enjoyed reading.

Thanks for this wonderful post, I will pass it on, especially for new bloggers I know. It will reinforce what I’ve been telling them.

  • Hi Lisa,

First time reading your blog….thanks for the info.

I bet if 20% of the 108 account opening in a minute are real……this week I was doing a thorough cleaning on my Twitter account, I discover that about 40% of account am following are either last sent a tweet in past 2,3 years or are just fake.

I started to unfollow these accounts and surprisingly, I have more than a thousand of these accounts to unfollow. Is just too confusing sometimes to use all these data for marketing purpose.

Thanks Lisa, and do have a nice day.

  • Hello Lisa –

You know it’s funny when I read this post, it was something I needed to read. It’s interesting when I think about it, I’ve been doing research on Twitter ads and trying to figure out how I can get a more targeted audience via Twitter. The 1.4 million Twitter searches blew my mind away. I had no idea. I had no idea that people on Twitter do that much searching via hashtags. On the the same token, it doesn’t surprise me because people do graph searches all the time on Facebook. I myself do a lot of my research on Youtube. I’m going to have to play around with this more and see the power behind Twitter.

Thank for updating us about the twitter minute with with interesting infographic.

With these 12 things am seeing and lots of updates that are going underground at twitter, i believe its going to be a powerful social network in the future.

Thank you for updating us about all these.

Take care and have a nice day ahead.

  • I knew a couple of those stats but not most of them; fascinating stuff. Twitter is still my favorite social media platform but, like Facebook, I hate that suddenly I’m seeing stuff from people I don’t remember following, only to see that I’m not following them; that just freaks me out. As for the DM feature, they must not have updated it on Tweetdeck because I still can’t send folks like through there.

Thanks for the information; I wonder if I can do something with it…

    • Hi Mitch, now Twitter – that’s my fav social media network too. I’ve been on it since 2009 and visit almost daily. The stats do amaze me too! I am starting to like the idea of the relevant tweets as long as they stay relevant and NOT salesy. Time will tell. You are still using tweetdeck? I haven’t used that on in years. I did hear it had some decent updates though. You are welcome and have a great rest of the week and Thanksgiving!

  • Hi Lisa,

Shouldn’t you be in Twitter team. May be, as a publisher? 😉

Impressive stats on Twitter and we rarely find revenue figures in such Infographics, isn’t it? Do mobile users account for the most share of these stats? I’ve often wondered about it, considering the global stats.

Wish if they could share stats about sharing images too. Guess it would be around 4 – 5 times of video links. Now I find images are flooding on Twitter, and stand out among other tweets. Video links? Not much as I’ve experienced. Hmm… More information indeed, but looks like less conversations too.

I read that Twitter is again focused on releasing standalone apps like Vine in 2015. Do you know what they might be? 🙂 It has something to do with recent acquisitions I believe.

Bloggers have to rethink about their Social Media strategy with these numbers going up, right? 🙂 Of course, your eBook is a great way to get started and to be a Tweep Master.

Enjoy your weekend ahead and happy tweetin’, Lisa 🙂

    Cheers…

    • Hi Mayura, nice to see you back online 🙂 I’d love to work for Twitter, that would be such a fun job! Yes, mobile is accounting for more and more. I find myself using my mobile more just around the house and not the laptop as much unless I’m doing my writing.
I’d agree with you on less conversations with video but look how well YouTube is doing? It may not be such a bad thing on Twitter. It sure will be interesting to see how they will look in the Twitter feed. I do like how Vine works in the feed already though.
It must be to make more money, right? That’s why they are in business after all.
It still amazes me Mayura how many do NOT use Twitter regularly and only push their Facebook posts via an app to share on Twitter – which I feel is almost useless done in that way. I rarely click on any of those links – I say “If I wanted to be on Facebook I’d be on Facebook and not on my Twitter streams”….Just my opinion of course 🙂
Thanks for coming by Mayura and hope your weekend is going well there since you are hours ahead of us here in the states!

  • Hi Lisa.

Those are interesting statistics. I knew a that there is always a lot going on, but I had never considered all of that processing of data in terms of numbers. It shows how important Twitter is for businesses.

It will be interesting to see how Twitter handles the relevant tweets in one’s timeline feed. Targeting is the order of the day.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Nathan, welcome to Inspire to Thrive! They sure are. Twitter is very important for business and yet so many businesses don’t use it yet. I used to have a retail website and it always generated sales for me. The tweets weren’t always about products either, and I got to know many people. Much easier to engage via that than Facebook for a business I believe. Especially with the recent Facebook changes. I am looking forward to those relevant tweets Nathan. Have a great upcoming weekend!

  • Hi Lisa,

These are some fascinating numbers. I really had no idea!!! I have really just started using it in the last four months or so and already I’m amazed at some the results I’m getting.

I’m meeting a lot of new business owners and entrepreneurs and both my website traffic and engagement is going up as a result of Twitter.

But, to think that much is happening that fast!!!!! It’s really incredible to ponder. I just heard Eric Schmidt, the former Chairman and CEO of Google, say that in 48 hours more content is generated than in all of human history through 2003. It is really staggering!!!!

I hope you have an awesome finish to your week Lisa!

Wow, that is amazing from Google. I wonder where it is all headed.
Thanks Don and I hope you have a great weekend coming up, hard to believe we are heading into Thanksgiving week.
Lisa recently posted…12 Things That Happen in a Twitter Minute and MoreMy Profile

  • That is a whole lot of stuff going on in a minute, and IMO it is something that makes Twitter weaker than Facebook, as a social media network. Sometimes less is more, and in the case of Twitter, fewer tweets/minute could result in more interactions. We as people get lost when we are offered tens of different options, but make choices in a snap when we have 2-3 different options.

Thanks for sharing, and I am looking forward to the videos that will be in our feeds!

Thanks for coming by Amiti and have a wonderful weekend ahead!

  • Lisa that query number is ASTOUNDING! Thanks so much for this inspiring share 😉

I’m on a twitter fast. After almost working the network daily, for the past 5 years, I’m pulling back. Me’s due for a break, right? 🙂 But your stats and hey, what happens in a minute, gives cause for pause. I may not play numbers games here as much these days but I get targeting. I really get targeting. I get when people search for keywords or phrases on twitter and when your handle pops up. I also get the deal with possibly sending relevant tweets to streams even if you’re not following someone.

    I love that one.

Targeting seems to be important to twitter, and users, so we’ll keep the feedback coming to see what else transpires in a twitter minute.

I for one love their updates….and your post may have goaded me to break my twitter fast.

    Well done Lisa! 😉

Thanks again for the inspired share. Tweeting it, of course 🙂

I’m liking the idea of their relevant tweets more and more. It will be a new exciting year for Twitter. I hope the newbies joining stay on and on.
I am looking for an updated handle and the one I wanted Lisapats is taken by someone who signed up in 2009, tweeted once and has 3 followers with an egg image. • Hey Lisa,

I am not surprised by this information at all. I’ll watch my stream and I’m not even following as many people as some and I miss a LOT. That’s when I’m actually on there at that moment and I think most of us really aren’t spending a lot of time there each day. We shouldn’t at least so there is no wonder so much goes missed,

I had been told not too long ago to share your post several times throughout the day that you published it and I had always been taught of course to not share your own stuff. But the fact of the matter is, if someone sees it it’s not going to be many people so spread it out and share throughout the day. That way you have a better chance of it being picked up and since Twitter is one of my top referral networks I know this definitely does work.

Great share and I agree with Donna, leave it to you to keep us informed.

Hope you’re doing great and glad you got your name changed. I saw that the other day so now I’ll have to get use to that. 🙂

Nope – I had not! We certainly can’t catch everything going on Twitter which is why I use lists. Yesterday a of firetrucks and police were across the street where I work – I checked my Twitter list for local media and knew immediately what was going on. (Another reason I LOVE Twitter).
I’ve got to do that more Adrienne, I’m always so afraid of tweeting my own stuff too much that I barely ever do more than 1 or 2 per day. Thanks for that reminder on self promotion.

Twitter is a big traffic generator for me too and it’s the one social media network I really concentrate on.

I really don’t like getting auto-DMs though. I usually just delete them because they are so spammy. Recently, I’ve been getting DMs saying following us on Facebook etc. I only just followed them on Twitter so I wouldn’t go over to Facebook and follow people straight away without knowing them better.

I really like the idea of relevant Tweets. There are so many people on Twitter and I can’t follow them all to find out who sends relevant Tweets out. At least that would be a great way to discover people who are Tweeting things that I would find relevant so I could then follow them.

I really like these new updates Twitter is making. I really think the new personalized support for new users will be a huge support. I remember being a late bloomer to twitter because I really didn’t get it when I started using it. Once I did, I realized how powerful of a resource it was and is. If I had understood better how to use the interface, I think I would have been on board a lot sooner than I was.

Also the 108 accounts per minute is pretty impressive, that’s 6480 new Twitter accounts per hour, then you have to wonder how many of those accounts are genuine and how many are fake. Interesting though 🙂
