Is your internet speed fast enough for you? Do you often find yourself staring at your computer waiting for the swirling effect to end so you can get on with your content marketing efforts? It can happen anywhere in the world today with inconsistent internet speed.
Do you wonder what my internet speed is? I checked mine with an internet speed test as you’ll see below.
Did you know that internet speeds are the fastest in Monaco today? The United States is still not even in the top 10 for the fastest internet speed.
Table of Contents
Does Your Inconsistent Speed Slow Down Your Content Marketing Efforts?
Imagine how much more you could do if your internet speed was much faster. You would be able to curate content at a higher speed as well as share things throughout social networks.
Not only that but you could watch more videos as they upload much quicker for your viewing.
One of the fastest-growing internet speeds is taking place in Taiwan today. This is happening because of the technology now available.
There are now fiber optics available there and broadband speeds have been increasing too because of it.
The Fastest Internet Speed Technologies
Fiber optics is the fastest type of internet connection today. It is the use of thin flexible fibers of glass or other transparent solids to transmit light signals, chiefly for telecommunications or for internal examination of the body.
Some countries like Japan have the highest penetration of this type of high speed internet connection.
A cable is a thick rope of wire of nonmetallic fiber; typically used for construction, mooring ships, and towing vehicles.
Since you share broadband with others in your area, you might experience a slowdown during peak hours. It is faster than DSL but may cost more too with that speed.
DSL is a technology for bringing high-bandwidth information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copo collect information or to communicate.
Satellite is typically slower than cable internet. Pricing on satellite internet services has come way down over the years.
It’s the best way to get the internet from remote areas of a region and maybe the only choice in those remote areas of the world.
Why Doesn’t The United States Have More High-Speeds?
There is an anti-competitive atmosphere in the United States leading to only one broadband company available in many parts of the county. People cannot choose between any 2 or more companies for their internet services. This leads to monopoly and higher price services.
The county also lacks the infrastructure for the technology. We would need fiber optic cables across the country and have them hooked up to homes and businesses.
It’s not a cheap venture, especially in rural towns where the internet is scarce. However, it is starting to change.
For example, today 56% of homes in the Unites States have access to fiber optic internet services. That has grown a lot over the last several years.
It really speed up when more people began to work from home.
How Do You Choose An Internet Provider?
Do you pick from the broadband providers with the fastest internet speeds? Or do you pick from the broadband providers with the lower-priced options?
Remember the old saying you get what you pick for? Yes, even with internet service it holds true.
If you are curating content you need fast-speed internet service. You need to get more done with less time. If you have a choice Fiber optics is the way to go now or Starlink.
What is My Internet Speed?
If you are not sure what your internet speed is today try out this internet speed test here.
This internet speed test will quickly let you know what your speeds are for uploading and downloading.
Why Broadband Speed is Key Today
Everyone expects things fast today. Getting a quality fast high-speed internet connection is crucial in today’s world. People don’t want to wait for the internet to come on. Remember the old days of dial-up?
And do you remember the infamous “You’ve Got Mail”? It would take sometimes 15-20 minutes just to get online.
You could be doing something else while you waited for it to come on the screen. And once you got online it would take a long time to download something or to watch a video.
Businesses rely on the Internet for everything today. From banking to our healthcare everything is being done online now. Having slow internet speed will no longer be tolerated by many.
Many people now realize time is money and the more time you have to produce things online the more money you can make.
In Conclusion: Inconsistent Internet Speed
I cannot imagine blogging and doing content marketing with a slow dial-up internet today. Think how long it takes you now to get things done.
Can you imagine it taking 3 times longer to do everything you do online? Internet speed is key today.
Ever since I moved to a rural area in the Northeast, my speed went down until we got FIOS in the area, it’s been a huge time-saver.
Others in our area use StarLink, however, it’s a bigger startup cost to get the equipment.
I’d love to know in the comments below what type of broadband provider you have and if you are happy with your internet speed and connection.

Hey Lisa,
I’m in Canada and there’s 2 – 3 BIG companies up here that control the Internet. But because they cost an arm and a leg, I go with smaller companies at the moment. And I’ll admit, my internet speed isn’t anywhere close to the fastest. But I just can’t justify paying close to $100 Canadian for Internet alone.
But it’d be nice to have that South Korean Internet speed though. I can only imagine what I’d do with that type of speed.
And quite frankly, I’m shocked that the US isn’t in the top 10. That amazes me actually. I wonder why that is? Money spent elsewhere perhaps?
Hi Andrew, glad to hear from someone in Canada.) Ww, that’s a lot for just internet!! I pay a little more for that with phone and TV. I was shocked at first too to learn the US was not in the top 10. They don’t see it as a utility here, and it would cost a fortune on the infrastructure. Interesting indeed. I learned a lot researching for this post Andrew. Thanks for coming by and for letting us know how it is in Canada with internet speeds.
No kidding, Lisa. And $100 isn’t even the top tier of the internet. You need to pay a bit more .. plus tax … to get unlimited. And the companies here are getting away with it because there isn’t BIG competition to stop them. There’s many horror stories of people I know (myself included at one point) that were paying 200 – 300 for internet, tv and phone.
Andrew, that is so crazy. I know in the US too when there is little competition they take advantage with high rates. It’s really too bad. I hope it changes in the coming years and is more affordable for all.
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the new information. I’m shocked that the U.S don’t have the fastest internet speed, I thought it was America.
Quality info.
Hi Emenike, you are welcome. I was too when I started doing the research and found the United States was not even in the top 10 for fast internet speed. Thanks for coming by and have a great day!
HI Lisa,
We are using Cable because that’s really the only service that is available to us in the area we live. It was Time Warner Cable, but Spectrum just bought them out about a month ago.
Since the buyout, it seems like our Internet has really slowed down. It drives me crazy, sometimes it takes a while to get a page to load.
When we were with Time Warner Cable we were getting Internet speeds in the 300’s. I just ran one one using your post and I got an Internet download speed of 253.
To tell you the truth, I don’t really know that much about Internet speed. I just know how much of a headache it’s been since Spectrum took over.
It would be nice if the United States was able to match South Korea’s technology so we could all benefit.
Thanks for sharing, have a great one.
Susan
Hi Susan, What part of the country are you in? Wow, that is sad to hear that a new company taking over would change the speed that much on you. Is the price still the same? I know, I could not believe the United States was not in the top 10 even. Thanks for your input Susan and I appreciate you coming by on this one. Have a great week ahead.
Lisa: What kind of internet connection do you have? I recently activated a fiber connection. I did the wi-fi speed test and got >90 Mbps in upload and download speed.
Hi Martin, Welcome to Inspire to Thrive. I have FIOS here – Fiber Optics – mine was 30.24 on download and 46.35 on upload. I don’t have the fastest their offer as the price is high but I am happy with it. Thanks for coming by! (I noticed your Twitter handle:) Have a great day Martin.
Hey Lisa,
I am using both the broadband and the Fiber Optics plans.
There is a lot of difference even in a different city than mine. It’s obvious that people get the internet speed according to their area.
Different speed in different countries.
~Ravi
Hi Ravi, which one of those do you like best? I have FIOS – Fiber Optics here and love it! It is very interesting to hear from folks from different countries here. Thanks for coming by Ravi and have a great day head there.
Hi Lisa,
This is interesting. I recall using Comcast at a home where we were house sitting in NJ. Lightning fast. I think it was Comcast. Or optimum? Maybe Optimum. Losing track LOL. Yet other high speed carriers are not nearly high speed. Those good old monopolies you speak of are at the root of less than lightning speed service. Although compared to where I usually am EVERYTHING speed wise in the US is faster than speeds abroad. Improving quickly though in places like Thailand and Bali, with Costa Rica speeding things up slowly too. Thanks for sharing.
Ryan
Hi Ryan, LOL I think you are right the monopolies are probably at the root of it. That or the governments. You need infrastructure too to make it all happen. Now I’m even more amazed at how much you get done Ryan when over there. I can’t imagine doing more with slower speeds like that. Thanks for coming by on this one Ryan. Have a great rest of the week!
Hello Lisa,
Awesome post !
Yeah INTERNET speed is one of the main problems facing by today’s world. Every body is going digitalized
in this modern era and the speed is not up to the mark.
Talking about India, the INTERNET speed here is often slow, the speed is not good at all, despite some companies
are providing great speed but they charge bit high, which can’t be afforded by many.
Seriously, I didn’t knew USA is not among the top 10, I thought it would be in the top 5.
Thanks for the share
Shantanu.
Thank you Shantanu. Do any people in India have high speed internet? How does it effect them when they do not? It’s interesting to hear about difference places from around the world on this one. I was surprised too that the U.S. was not in the top 10. You are welcome and I appreciate your coming by Shantanu. Have a great day.
Lisa here in India, people manage to run their internet through various ways , like going for a router or broad brands, there are some companies who offer good speed but almost all of them charge bit high. Talking about the recent times, the conditions have gone better
and now the things are working much smoother than early .
Hi Shantanu, thanks for the information from India. It’s the same here in the United states, they do charge higher for faster speeds. I just hope the affordability doesn’t go out the window with the speeds. Thanks for coming by and have a great weekend Shantanu there.
Hey Lisa!
Interesting post! I’m really not amazed that the US is behind in Internet speed. Heck, aren’t we still living in the stone ages in some areas? I have one option where my home business is….Cable. Fios isn’t available and I hear Dish stinks. At work, we have some half-baked company. The Internet crrrraaaaawwwwllllls like a turtle. It’s horrible! I keep trying to get Cable there, but it would have to be statewide and they aren’t buying it. Anywho…..not sure how fast mine at home is but it is set up to carry over a dozen wireless devices and stream movies via firestick. It doesn’t do too bad.
Thanks for sharing this article! Always good to find out new things!
B
P.S. Not sure why I can never use CLuv here when I can on other sites. Very weird.
Hi Bren, thank you. I guess there are quite a few areas still in the stone ages here in the states. I have FIOS and really like it. I had cable and it used to go out a lot. How do you like your firestick? You are welcome. Yes, there’s been an issue with a few here with CL – plugin hasn’t been updated in over a year. Mayura still trying to work on it for me. I’ve noticed it too on a few other’s sites too. Thanks for coming by Bren and have a good night!
People don’t realize how different internet speeds are in various parts of the country. On both coasts, some people have 100 meg download speeds now. Across many rural areas, there are still no real high speed internet options. (Except HughesNet which was so bad when I tested it that the slowest dial-up in 1994 was better. Some claim it is better now, but you would have to get locked into a 1 year contract to find out. I already paid for their useless internet once and wouldn’t want to risk it again.)
Fortunately for me, in rural SE Oklahoma Oklatel has DSL. The base is 3 meg down and .5 up for about $50. Upgrades to 6 meg down / .5 up put you over $100/mo. Last year they upgraded and we can get 10 meg down and 1 up, but it costs $150+/mo. That is what I’m paying.
The best option for many people and often available in very remote areas is a Wireless ISP (WISP). I’ve had 6 meg down / 1 meg up WISP service in several areas for under $50 a month. If you live near a tiny town that has a water tower, there may be a WISP antennae on top of it that can reach you. Their range is 10-15 miles as the crow flies as long as there is nothing in the way (like a mountain or heavy trees too tall to get the receiver above.)
People building sites need to realize that not all Americans have ANY high speed options. Be aware that cell phone internet often has very restrictive bandwidth limits. While it will probably work for a commuter who wants to watch a video, it probably won’t for someone who works full-time online.
One other option to consider is Dish TV now has internet available in some areas. But check the reviews as the one person I recommended it to found something online to convince him it wasn’t a good option.
Hi Gail, Yes, we have dish options here too. It’s okay but they raised the rates a lot after just one year. So beware. Some cable companies do that as well. I feel bad for those that have no choice with only one option. The prices can be steep! I appreciate your input on this post Gail.
Hi Gail, you are right, it is really varied across our country. I have FIOS now and I really like it though on the TV sometimes you see fluctuations every now and then. I don’t think I’ve heard of the WIreless WISP – I wonder just how many have it? Great point – some websites take a long time to view and if people do not have speed they will be going off and on to something else. Long videos may not be the best idea all the time. Thanks for the info on this one Gail!
Hi Lisa,
I didn’t take the speed test yet….but looking forward to it. My gosh, we need more in the game instead of this monopoly here. I used to use “Dish” service and it was so quick, but now, living in a forested area I have no choice but to use cable, which I’m not crazy about.
Speed is so important these days. So many people use their mobile phones and if speed is a problem there or on their computer, they are gone, going to the next thing.
Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention especially here in the U.S.
-Donna
Hi Donna, oh yes, those satellite dishes can provide quick service. I have FIOS now and love it. I was amazed in doing the research how far down the United States was for internet speed. We are far behind other countries. New Zealand seems to have it right. Thanks for coming by on this one Donna and have a great rest of the week!
