Gab – A Lesser Known Twitter X Alternative

Gab is a lesser well-known social media platform that emerged as an alternative to Twitter back in 2016. With its unique features and benefits, it aims to provide users with a refreshing and more open online experience.

In this section, I will explore the various features and benefits that make Gab an appealing choice for those seeking an alternative to Twitter.

Features of Gab

Gab offers a range of features that enhance the user experience and provide a platform for free speech. Here are some notable features:

  • Freedom of speech: Gab places a strong emphasis on free speech and does not engage in content moderation, allowing users to express themselves without fear of censorship.
  • No algorithmic timeline: Unlike Twitter, Gab does not utilize complex algorithms to curate your timeline. Instead, it presents posts in chronological order, ensuring that you see all the content from people you follow.
  • Customizable feed: Gab allows users to personalize their feed by selecting specific topics and categories of interest. This ensures that users see content that aligns with their preferences and helps them discover new voices.
  • Public and private groups: Gab enables users to create and join both public and private groups, fostering communities centered around shared interests or causes.

Groups is where it’s at on Gab, I get more notifications from several groups I participate in there than I do on any other social network.

Benefits of Gab

Gab offers several benefits that make it an attractive alternative to Twitter:

  • Open and uncensored platform: Gab’s commitment to freedom of speech sets it apart from other social media platforms. Users can express their opinions without the fear of being silenced or shadowbanned.
  • Engaged and diverse user base: Gab has cultivated a community of passionate and active users who value open dialogue and free expression. This vibrant user base ensures an engaging experience.
  • Provides an opportunity for users to engage with opinions and ideas they may not encounter on mainstream platforms.
  • Privacy-focused: Gab prioritizes user privacy. This commitment to privacy ensures that users have control over their personal information on Gab.

Gab does NOT sell user data to advertisers as Meta did. (Some of you may have filed for money from the Cambridge Analytics lawsuit.)

If you don’t want to see any political stuff in your stream, use the groups feature or personal feed and you won’t see any of it. There are hundreds of all different types of groups on Gab from gardening, and puzzle-making to new technology to small businesses.

How To Download Gab

However, you cannot download the Gab app from any app store as it has been banned by big tech. Below shows you have you can download them for your mobile device.

Once you have a username and password you can log into Gab via a desktop.

Mastodon Alternate Twitter

Mastodon emerged as a viable alternative to Twitter due to a number of factors. First and foremost, it offered users an open-source platform, allowing for greater customization and control over their own data. (Just like the Minds social network.)

Additionally, Mastodon addressed concerns around privacy and moderation by implementing a decentralized network of independently-operated servers, known as instances.

This decentralized model not only provided users with the ability to choose an instance that aligned with their values and community guidelines but also reduced the risk of censorship and centralized control.

As a result, Mastodon attracted a growing user base of 2 million users seeking a more user-centric and inclusive social media experience. Many who disliked Elon Musk as the owner of Twitter jumped over to Mastodon.

Mastodon – Difficulty Downloading

Installing Mastodon can be a bit challenging for some. The process requires a decent level of technical knowledge and familiarity with command-line interfaces. However, with proper instructions and attention to detail, it is achievable.

Users should be prepared to follow a step-by-step guide, which may involve setting up a server, configuring dependencies, and running specific commands.

Taking the time to understand the process and seeking help from the supportive Mastodon community can make the installation process much smoother.

Bluesky – Twitter’s Alternative

In this section, we will explore the exciting world of Bluesky, Twitter’s alternative by Jack Dorsey. With the ever-evolving social media landscape, it’s no surprise that the old Twitter CEO is taking steps to innovate and adapt.

Bluesky is an ambitious project initiated by Twitter under Jack Dorsey to build a decentralized social media protocol. This means that instead of relying on a centralized platform like Twitter, Bluesky aims to create a network where users have more control over their data and the overall experience.

The idea behind Bluesky is to enable users to connect, share, and engage in a more open and user-centric manner.

Enhancing User Control At Bluesky

Bluesky’s primary goal is to empower users by giving them greater control over their social media experience. With the current state of social media, users often feel like they have limited control over their data and how it is used. Bluesky aims to change that.

By decentralizing the social media infrastructure, Bluesky intends to allow users to choose the platforms and services they prefer while still being able to connect and interact with others on different networks.

This approach could lead to a more personalized and tailored social media experience for users.

Promoting Innovation and Collaboration

Bluesky’s project also seeks to encourage innovation and collaboration in the social media space. By creating an open protocol, developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs can contribute to the development and improvement of the network.

Bluesky’s decentralized nature opens up opportunities for new features, applications, and integrations to be built on top of the protocol. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of community and enables the social media landscape to evolve in exciting and unexpected ways.

Bluesky represents Jack Dorsey’s vision for a more user-centric, innovative, and decentralized social media ecosystem. By embracing this alternative, he aims to address some of the challenges faced by traditional platforms while empowering users and promoting collaboration.

Minds – A Decentralized Social Media Platform

Minds is a revolutionary decentralized social media platform that gives users control over their content and data. In this section, we will explore the key features that set Minds apart and make it one of the best Twitter alternatives in 2023.

Privacy and Transparency

Minds take user privacy seriously. Unlike traditional social media platforms, Minds does not sell your personal information to advertisers. Your data remains private and secure, giving you peace of mind while connecting with others.

Additionally, Minds operates on an open-source code, allowing users to verify the platform’s security and transparency.

Decentralization and User Empowerment On The Minds Social Network

Minds are built on a decentralized network, which means that the power is in the hands of the users. There is no central authority controlling the platform, making it resistant to censorship and manipulation.

With Minds Social, you have the freedom to express yourself without fear of being silenced.

Monetization and Cryptocurrency of Minds

Minds offer a unique way for content creators to monetize their work. Through the Minds+ subscription program, users can directly support their favorite creators with tokens.

These tokens can be earned by engaging with the platform or purchased using cryptocurrency. It’s a win-win situation, allowing creators to earn a living doing what they love, while users enjoy high-quality content.

Content Control and Algorithm Transparency

One of the biggest frustrations with traditional social media platforms is the lack of control over your feed. With Minds, you are in charge.

You can customize your feed based on your interests and preferences, ensuring that you see the content that matters to you.

Moreover, Minds openly shares its algorithm, allowing users to understand how their content is being promoted and recommended.

Minds are at the forefront of the decentralized social media revolution. Its commitment to privacy, user empowerment, and transparency make it a standout choice for those seeking an alternative to Twitter.

With Minds, you can enjoy a more personal and authentic social media experience while maintaining control over your data and content.

Threads – Another Meta Product And Alternate Twitter Platform

If you read any news on social media you’ve heard of this newest alternate Twitter network.

My blogger friend Vishwajeet from Webmartnet has this to say about the new Twitter alternative as he signed up on the first day of its release:

Threads is a new microblogging service by META. I really like the approach and the interface. You can connect with people and share your thoughts just like we do on Twitter. Sharing pics, videos, and links is a great feature. However, Interface needs to be improved. Overall my experience is good. Really looking forward to it. – Vishwajeet Kumar from

However, beware if you want to delete your Thread account you will also delete your Instagram account along with it.

Threads Stats

It is reported that Threads has over 100 million users signed up from the initial release last week as an extension of the popular Instagram app. That is why if you delete the Threads app you delete your Instagram account as well.

There are reports this social network may take over one of the top spots of all social networks. Other reports like this one from The BBC are saying that many brands are not jumping on board as they have too many social networks already to manage.

In 2024, there are 130 million users. Time will tell how far this new alternate Twitter network will go.

Threads Differences From Twitter

Threads allow for up to 500 character count posts and up to 10 images or videos in a thread post making it appear more like Instagram. The feed is not chronological and more random like Instagram or Facebook.

Furthermore, there are no direct messages on this app and no desktop version is available yet according to Creative Bloom.

It sounds more like an Instagram alternative vs. an alternate Twitter X, no?

Truth Social – A Political Twitter Alternative

In the ever-evolving world of social media, users are increasingly concerned about censorship. This has led to the rise of alternative platforms that prioritize free speech after the former president was suspended by Twitter.

One such platform is Truth Social, a revolutionary Twitter alternative that empowers users to express themselves freely without compromising their ideals or privacy. According to The New York Times, traffic has surged on this alternate Twitter network as the former President’s popularity increased with his indictments.

This political social network went worldwide in early July of 2023 and continues to grow in 2024.

Like-Minded Connections

Truth Social Network is a platform that aims to provide an honest and reliable space for users to connect and share information. It operates by allowing individuals to create profiles and interact with others through posts, comments, and messages.

Users can share their thoughts, opinions, and news articles, while also engaging in discussions with like-minded individuals.

Security Features of Truth Social

Alongside anonymity, security is a top priority on Truth. The platform employs advanced security measures to protect user accounts and mitigate potential risks. Here are some notable security features of Truth Social:

  • Two-Factor Authentication: Truth provides users with the option to enable two-factor authentication, adding an extra layer of security to their accounts. This feature requires users to provide an additional verification code, typically sent to their mobile devices, before gaining access to their accounts.
  • Secure Data Storage: User data on Truth uses industry-standard secure encryption methods. This ensures that sensitive information remains protected from unauthorized access, reducing the risk of data breaches.

By prioritizing anonymity and security, Truth Social presents a compelling alternative to Twitter for political junkies. Users can express themselves freely, knowing that their identity and personal information are safe.

Counter Social Network

The Counter Social network is a platform that opposes and challenges traditional social networking sites. It aims to provide an alternative space for users who are seeking a more private, secure, and less commercialized online experience.

Unlike mainstream networks, the Counter Social network prioritizes user privacy and data protection. It offers features such as decentralized networks, end-to-end encryption, and user-controlled data-sharing settings.

By emphasizing user agency and autonomy, the Counter Social network empowers individuals to have greater control over their online presence and digital interactions.

Counters Terms – Blocking Some Countries

Some have argued that since they block some countries they are censoring content.

According to Counter themselves, Counter Social is a private entity. As a private entity, CounterSocial can configure security for its hardware/software assets and users as it sees fit, including firewalls, traffic filtering WAF, etc.

CounterSocial is not required to grant protections aside from those stated in our Terms of Service and/or End User License Agreement, which can be changed at any time, for any reason.

Parler Making A Comeback

News has it that Parler will be making a comeback in 2024 before the next election.  This is the conservative alternative to Twitter X that was taken down  by the Amazon webhost back in 2021.

It made one comeback but once again was sold and the new owners have been sending emails to it’s users for months without the site being up.

It will be interesting to see how this one will launch sometime in 2024.

Conclusion: Best Twitter Alternatives

In conclusion, when it comes to finding the best Twitter alternatives in 2024, several platforms stand out. Gab, Bluesky, Minds, Truth Social, and Threads offer unique features and functionalities that cater to different user preferences.

Whether you are looking for an alternate Twitter platform that prioritizes free speech, decentralized communication, or a more privacy-focused approach, these alternatives have you covered.

However, I’ll be staying on Twitter as it draws the most traffic to the blog today after all these years. Only one month in over 10 years was traffic down from Twitter as the #1 referral spot here. Gab is growing quickly to the #2 stop with their group features.

  1. Ryan K Biddulph

All good to know, Lisa. I am dialing on the “legacy” social sites a bit to target traffic more effectively, yet, it is smart to be on the lookout for new, promising sites flashing some potential. We want to spread out our digital footprint as much as possible not so much as to prevent over exposure on one site, but to blog abundantly. Driving traffic from the traditional social heavies and some new sites diversifies business and also boosts your overall exposure. Smart move in a world of bloggers who make the error of attaching to 1 or 2 traffic sources, only to suffer by not capitalizing by what’s out there.

    1. Hi Ryan, thank you. Yes, I haven’t joined them all, it’s too overwhelming and counter-productive. But I know others are looking for alternatives out there so I wanted to present them the best I could. I still love Twitter with all its features today. It really is evolving especially with video. It will be interesting to see how it evolves further. Thanks for coming by Ryan and loving your South Korea photographs on Twitter. Have a great day.

  2. Hello Lisa,
You provided a great list of Twitter alternatives. Of course, Twitter has its unique advantages and features, but it’s always wise to explore other options that resonate with different preferences and needs. Your article provides a valuable resource for individuals who may be looking to diversify their social media presence.
    Thanks for the valuable information.

    1. Thanks Nitin. I still love Twitter after all these years, it’s the fastest way to connect with others and get your info out there at the same time. However, there are some alternatives that do well and may inspire others to check out too. Thanks for taking the time to comment here. Have a great day!

  3. Lisa;

You are always in-the-know with the many social channels and platforms! This is a pretty comprehensive list for sure.

For me, I just can’t spread myself much further and I also try to think in terms of optimizing the select channels I’m on, and in truth, my own social falls behind client accounts and other project work.

Plus, I still love Twitter and don’t feel the need for an alternative platform when, well, there’s Twitter! Lol I also think, as you said, Twitter’s is evolving, and I’m hopeful that means only getting better. For example, it was announced they are going to start paying creators on Twitter!! And things are in the works to enhance video capabilities on the platform. I do still also enjoy TweetChats and Twitter Spaces!

Thanks for all your hard work, Lisa, staying on top of things and sharing tons of information with your readers!

    1. Hi Sue-Ann, thank you. I’m with you as I haven’t joined several of them. There is no way to be successful with them if you spread yourself too thin. I love Twitter too, it remains the best as I mentioned at the end of the article. It has consistently driven traffic to this blog for over a decade. And yes, Twitter is still evolving! Thanks for coming by with your input Sue-Ann. Have a fabulous day!

    Hello Lisa,

    Regards,
    Vishwajeet Kumar
