Why Your Social Media Marketing Is Failing: 5 Reasons To Fix It

There is no denying the fact that social media has a very significant presence in everyone’s lives these days. Right from running a successful business to setting up a corporate profile, everyone needs social media to reach out to customers. You want to be sure that your social media marketing is not failing in any way today.

Learn how to market your business on social media to generate leads.

Is Your Social Media Marketing Attracting Customers?

For this very reason, it’s imperative to keep your social media marketing strategies up to date. You want to make the most out of your virtual presence.

Of course, who wants to be left in the dark ages like this old phone?

is your social media marketing failing you
Learn why your social media marketing may be failing and what you can do about it.

But wait? If your business has a social media presence and tons of strategies then why are you still losing customers?

The simple answer to the problem is the old marketing strategies you are using to drive your online presence.

Here’s A List of 5 Reasons Why Your Social Media Is Failing To Attract Customers:

1. Customers Can’t Find Your Business Online

Do your customers know how to find your business on social media? If they do a search on a social network will they find you by your company name or personal name?

However, if your customers can’t even find your business in a few clicks, then the whole purpose of being online is defeated.

Your social media needs to be used thoroughly to ensure that the right benefits can be derived at the right times. You need to analyze and adjust when needed.

What worked yesterday may not work anymore.

social media fail

Do you have a Google Places Profile? A Facebook business page or an Instagram business page? These are the types of places your business should claim.

Having personal profiles no longer cuts it for a business. You need the business accounts to view analytics and make adjustments.

Then, you have the ability to advertise your business on social media.  Social media has become a pay-to-play arena for businesses.

2. Wrong Social Media Marketing Platform For Your Biz

To be in the limelight, your business needs to get the right amount of attention at all times. For this reason, if a business needs to reach out to customers globally, it should be on LinkedIn instead of Snapchat.

Depending on your kind of products, target audience, location, etc. the social media platform can be chosen to enhance sales and increase your customer base. Therefore not all social networks are for all types of businesses.

3. Be Subtle, But Don’t Overdo It

Marketing approaches need to be subtle, yet firm. In an attempt to sell your business’s products, don’t pester your customers so much that they end up running away from your business.

You want them running towards your business.

These marketing strategies should be subtle, but they should also be aligned with the end goals of your business. Providing useful information to your customers and followers is above all subtle.

4. Your Content Lacks Engagement

Social media is all about engaging with your end customers. No doubt if the content lacks basic engagement your customers will tend to drift away. They end up losing interest in what your business has to offer.

Therefore, keep the content lively; take inputs from your customers, and keep them happy. No doubt that will ensure sure everyone keeps coming back for more engaging content.

5. Is Your Social Media Marketing Timing Off?

In addition, timing is everything. What happens when you post your tweet at midnight?

By the time your potential customer’s login into their social media accounts in the morning, everything that they tweeted is suppressed under tons of other tweets. Chances are your tweet would go unnoticed.

Hence, a lot of times businesses tend to overlook the timing of their social media posts. Therefore many businesses end up complicating their social media usage more than necessary.

For this reason, many businesses turn to social media marketing tools to automate their messages at the right time. That’s why I love Missing Lettr and Circlebloom.

Both tools let you automate your posts with the help of AI.

How to Market Your Business On Social Media

There are a lot of businesses and companies out there that tend to use social media for the right reasons. Every business has its usage policies and social media strategies when it comes to marketing its business online.

For example, companies like Lolli use Twitter to reach out to their customers frequently. They provide valuable information to their followers.

With these social networks like Twitter, Lolli can showcase their products to customers. When users shop with Lolli they get to earn FREE bitcoin.

The best way to market your business on social media is to engage with your audience. Know where your audience is and be active there.

Respond to all inquiries quickly and take them offline if possible. Then, get emails or phone numbers so you can keep in touch with your customers.

Your Niche Makes A Difference

All things considered, it all depends on what kind of business niche you are in. On the other hand, it also depends on what purpose you are using your social media marketing for.

What works on TikTok may not work on Facebook. You must know the demographic of your audience and where your customers go when they are on social media.

Your Turn

Is your social media marketing working for you or is it failing you? Do you know the purpose of your social media marketing?

I’d love to know more in the comments below about which social networks you are using today. Have you changed them over the years as audiences have changed?

  1. Great article!
Just wanted to ask you and your readers if anyone has had recent issues with Facebook!
Recently, they removed every single post from my business page and personal page that linked to my website!!!
They said it is spam but the articles in the links took me ages to write and are defo not spam!
Do you think this us a strategy to make people like me have to pay for ads???
Look forward to more informative posts…

    1. Hi Matt, I have not heard of that yet but will ask around. Your site does have some cool articles by the way!
Nothing Facebook does would surprise me either. They are becoming more pay to play. Do you share other articles too on your FB page?

  2. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for these tips. I see the most engagement in Facebook groups and on Instagram, and make a point to respond to blog comments. Twitter is my #2 traffic source and yet most of the messages I receive are promotional. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to see DMs that are real, genuine conversations. Those, I’m all over!

The best way to increase engagement is to create content around topics that are already popular within your niche. I always ask myself what problem I’m solving with each post to ensure that I provide value for my readers.

    1. Hi Sandra, You are welcome. I haven’t been on Facebook groups much but plan on it for 2018. I hear so much about them but haven’t the time yet to really participate. Blog commenting is huge for me as well as Twitter.
Yes, on the DM’s. But I’ve gotten business right from DM’s, inquiries so I’m careful now to read them! I have almost missed a few in the past as so many are spammy like you say.
Solving problems is key Sandra. I think that plays big into SEO now as well. People are asking questions via Alexa and Google and answers are now been spoken back to them.
Thanks for coming by and have a great day and weekend ahead Sandra.

Hi Lisa. Great article by the way. Social media marketing nowadays are a big demand especially thru some of the top social media sites. People today won’t just look on the content if the context isn’t quality enough for their “taste”. I myself personally when promoting my business online become depressed when no one even notices the product that I have uploaded. I keep asking myself “what did I do wrong?”, “is something missing in my photo”, etc. Anyways, great read by the way and keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Kathleen, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. Oh yes, it happens to all of us – not every post is big “hit”. But if you engage with others and keep on going you will see results. It takes time and some people don’t have the patience for that time. Which channels do you use? Thanks for coming by Kathleen.

  4. Wow, what a great article it is! Your posts are so interesting and providing me great information. This is really effective for us. Thanks for the sharing.

    1. Hi Anish, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. Thank you for your comment and compliments. Have a wonderful new week ahead. You are most welcome!

  5. Hi Lisa, We stumbled over here different web address and
thought I might as well check things out. Thank you for your informative content. Excellent article for all the freelance SEO/SEM out there looking to build their network and be successful. I am one of the newbies that try to get traffic and audience using different social media’s for my small business sites. It’s really helpful a blog like this shared publicly to help people starting small businesses, Best Wishes to your next article!

    1. Hi JB, thanks for coming by. Welcome to Inspire to Thrive. What is your favorite social network to generate that traffic JB? How long has your site been around? Don’t forget to sign up for updates here.

  6. The problem with the concept of “engagement” is that, for someone like me, engagement means interacting with others when they try to engage with you, or trying to engage people so they’ll engage with you. Most of us write blog posts that get little engagement, no matter what the topic is. For instance, someone like Neil Patel gets tons of comments on his blog, but he almost never responds to any of them; where’s the engagement there? Whereas I’ll respond to all legitimate comments, but otherwise I get little engagement there or pretty much anywhere else on social media except Facebook, and that’s only the personal stuff.

Not lamenting, just saying that it’s not easy for the majority of us… and maybe it’s not supposed to be.

All that & no CommentLuv love; sigh… lol

    1. Hi Mitch – I’ve been wondering lately if comments and engagement are dropping on blogs and are going more towards the social networks? I’ll have to do some ressearch on that one. I don’t understand why he doesn’t answer more comments. Take a guy like Sam Hurley, he answers here, there and everywhere! He responds to every comment on every network (he doesn’t have comments on most of his post though, they are turned off). I agree, it’s not always easy for sure. Yes,CommentLuv – having a techie working on it for me. No updates on the poor plugin and I could not find my log-in. I hope he (Mayura) will be able to figure it out soon. Thanks for coming by Mitch and have a wonderful Tuesday. Hope you are not getting all the rain I’ve seeing here today!

  7. Good content Lisa.

I would also like to add that social networks are suppose to be social so brands must avoid hammering their audience with promotions and focus on adding value as well as increasing engagement.

This was a good read, Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Gugulethu, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. You make an excellent point – hammering audiences with promotions is overkill and is not being social on the social networks. Thanks for coming by and have a great day!

  8. Hi Lisa,

I really can resonate with “Be subtle, but firm” because I never want to come off like a hack lol. Engage with people is key. Then when you get to know a group you can say something like “Hey I just wrote this new ebook. Want to check it out?” Subtle and CTA at once. People are more likely to respond to that rather than “Get My New ebook”

I get so many people emailing me with an article and say please post this to your blog. The trouble is I don’t know who they are. Go figure. Whoever is teaching them this way of engagement needs to stop.

When it comes to timing…for me it is a bit confusing. I do have many peeps on the other side of the globe so I have to consider engaging with that timeline.

    1. Hi Suraj, I’m glad you could resonate with that sentence. I would give them a reason to check your new ebook out, find how what they need and provide it. I can relate to your emails, I get them too. I want to know them first, they must be a commenter here or engaged with me on the social networks. Yes, you must be able to engage all the time, not just 9-5. It’s a never ending job. Thanks for your insights on this one Suraj, have a wonderful day!

  9. Hey Lisa,

    Very Interesting and informational post.

Over the past few months I have learned that Social Media marketing is tough, if not followed the right ways, and I have faced failure many times, i have failed to promote my brand on social Media, specially on Twitter.

But I am learning very quickly, reading out posts daily, looking to use new techniques to grow quickly.

By the way, Thanks for the info Lisa.

    1. Hi Jelina, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. Oh yes, social media marketing is not always that easy and it changes so frequently. What worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. If there is anyway I can help with Twitter do let me know http://inspiretothrive.com/contact/. Thanks for coming by and have a great weekend ahead Jelina.

  10. Vashishtha Kapoor

    Hi Lisa
That is an awesome piece of advice for social media marketing. I am going to do a campaign for my client who is into landing page building software and I have done some already. But the number of engagements and conversions is never predictable.
Now that after going through your post, I am sure I can hit my perspective customers on the right time with a good promo material.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Vashishtha, welcoem to Inspire to Thrive. Thank you. What type of software are you using for your landing page? I’ve heard Thrive is really good. (plugin) I’m glad this piece will help you Vashishtha. Thanks for coming by and have a great day.

      1. Vashishtha Kapoor

        Hi Lisa
I am actually running a campaign for a landing page builder – lp.bayamedia.com here is the platform.
As you already know that this kind of pages hardly get converted because the volume of content is very low.
What I have to do now is make a separate page on the website to elaborate more about the product and then link to this page so that user does not get confused. What do you say?

        1. Hi Vashishtha, yes, you would need to have traffic to it. Maybe buy some Google adwords to get started. Then mention at the bottom or center of each of your blog posts. Just be sure it is related to your topics of course. Thanks for coming back to explain that one.

          1. Vashishtha Kapoor

            Hi Lisa
You’re right. I need to buy an adwords account and run a campaign with the keyword. I have seen some brands bidding on other in google. I will look to do something like this.
            Thanks

  11. Hello Lisa,

I am regular reader of your blog and i found this blog post very helpful for our business. As we are investing in social media but not getting the proper result but after reading your article, I have found what we are lacking for our business.

Thanks for sharing these very important point with us.

    1. Hi Adam, Nice to hear you are a regular reader here. What did you find exactly that was lacking for your social media? I am so glad to be of help. You are welcome. Have a great weekend Adam.

  12. Duncan Pattinson

many thanks for the article. Timing as we know is everything and that is why most of my tweets are now scheduled. Which has made a massive difference. We are low looking at introducing some kind of game to get visitors to interact. Social networking we think now needs outsourced to professionals that understand that market. we want to gain more but now need to invest.

    1. You are welocme Duncan. I do love scheduling mine too with the Buffer. I am also trying out a new scheduling program – stay tuned! They do say gaming is big online. Sometimes you do have to outsource, they are only so many hours in the day. Have a great day.

    2. You are welocme Duncan. I do love scheduling mine too with the Buffer. I am also trying out a new scheduling program – stay tuned! They do say gaming is big online. Sometimes you do have to outsource, they are only so many hours in the day. Have a great day.

  13. Hello Lisa,
Amazing tutorial… your tips and suggestion are really useful and will help many new online marketers to make their social media strategy in a correct way so as to get good response. Writing # content title on social media can also be a good move to get into search.
    Thanks for writing great post

    1. Hi Gaurav, thank you. Oh yes, how you write the content title can help in having your content being found. I love using the co-headline analyzer to help with that. Thanks for your input and have an awesome day!

  14. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the informative piece. After everything is done correctly, timing remains the only thing that can stand between the marketer and his goals. Just imagine having to target fans from different parts of the globe. You have fans in Australia, USA, and Europe. It is not always possible to target them all effectively in one time slot.

To maximize your your reach you may need to repeat your posts more than once. Make sure that you re-post at optimum times according to time zones in different target regions. This can be easily and effectively achieved with the use of social media management tools.

    1. Hi Jim, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. You are welcome. That is so true- there are many targets all over the world and repeating your posts is imperative especially via Twitter. I do some marketers posting more than once on Facebook too now. Which social management tool do you like the best? Right now my favorite is the Buffer. Thanks for coming by and have a great new week ahead Jim.

  15. Manidipa Bhaumik

    Hey Lisa,

Choosing the right platform is the first most important step in getting social media success. It is not necessary that the one with highest user base is suitable for your business. One needs to find out the platform, where the target audience is hanging out.

Thank you for sharing the helpful tips here. Happy to share. Take care and have a great Sunday.

    1. Hi Manidipa, yes – that is true. Having the right platform is key to having success with social media. I also like the 3 rule, keeping it 3 networks, anything over that and you get spread yourself way too thin. Thanks for coming by and have a wonderful Sunday too!

  16. Hey Lisa,

Now-a-days, social media becomes a ultimate weapon which helps you to get victory very easily but it is completely depends upon your strategies regarding social media. Every social platform has its own importance but you have to decide which is perfect for your business. Many people fail in this zone only which I’ve experience. Thanks for sharing these valuable tips with us.

    With best wishes,

    Amar kumar

    1. Hi Amar, oh yes, those strategies do make a difference than being there haphazardily. I know i used to spread myself way too thin. I stick with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn before venturing into other places. We can only do well in so a few places to be able to focus. Thanks for coming by Amar with your input on this one….

  17. Hi Lisa,

Great tips especially for someone like me who is still trying to learn the ins and outs of using it. I am still testing things out and trying to find which social network is providing me the best return for my time.

I definitely like the tip about posting things at the right time. Definitely a great tip. There are so many different social media channels finding the right one for one’s website can be a time consuming task. Although, I am finally narrowing it down to the top 2 for my site.

Definitely learning a lot from the tips your providing. Oh by the way, I used to be the old phone. It took me a while to jump on the social media bandwagon. For some reason I was just doing everything to avoid it.

I am really enjoying it as I learn new things along the way. I’ll be back for more tips.

    Have a great day!

    Susan

    1. Thanks Susan. Which are your 2 top social networking sites Susan? I’m trying to stay on 3 myself, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn but Pinterest and Instagram still drag me in from time to time. I almost ditched Google+, as I rarely use it now. We must have focus to succeed. Being in too many places hinders that focus. Thank you for coming by Susan and have a great day.

      1. Hi Lisa,

Actually, right now Facebook is my biggest one with Twitter being my second. Pinterest is climbing quickly thought and I really enjoy using it.

Don’t know Facebook is my biggest? I really don’t do much with it. Other than participate in some Facebook Groups every now and then? Thanks for sharing your social media tips, I’m picking up a lot of nuggets from your site.

I don’t really know that much about Google+ and while I still post my content there. I am sure that I am NOT using it correctly. I just don’t have time to learn how to use it. And to tell you the truth, I don’t get any traffic from it.

Hope you have a great one.

        Susan

        1. Hi Susan, those Facebook groups can be quite powerful. I know I get some traction when I particpate in them. I dropped Google+ for quite some time, it didn’t generate much traffic and I can converse with those folks on the other platforms. Thanks for sharing this with us here Susan. Have a fabulous Friday ahead.

  18. I think you also have to use social media right for the platform that you choose. What might be right to do on Facebook might not be right on Snapchat. You have to know your audience, have a goal in mind, and post accordingly. I think too many businesses have a goal of posting every day rather than posting the right things that will lead to more business.

    1. Hi Andrew, that is for sure. Each platform is different. Some platforms you can post more than others and some you can be more informal than others. Thanks for coming by Andrew.

  19. Hey Lisa,

Social media marketing is one of the hottest topics people are talking about. Everyone is trying to build their brand.

But as you have mentioned, people should choose the right platform. I have never used Snapchat because of its limitations.

The timing matters a lot. It took me many months to analyze the responsive time for each platform I use.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

    ~Ravi

    1. Hi Ravi, yes, it surely is. I tested out Snapchat just to see what it is all about but didn’t find enough reason to use it. I am trying to focus on the big 3 – Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. I dropped Google+ for the most part and I still use Pinterest when I have time. I use Instagram for fun and knowing how to – more of a hobby. Timing is key too. You are right about that Ravi. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

  20. Hi Lisa,

I am just getting into Social Media marketing and blogging and these tips are helpful. I agree that the content has to be engaging, you have to really get to know your audience so you know what it is that engages them. It will definitely take time and patience to build a following then learn what engages them.

    Thanks for the tips.

    1. Hi Dan, I am happy to hear that they are helpful for you. Yes, it definately does take time to know your audience and what they like too. You are welcome and drop me a line anytime you have a question.

  21. Praveen Rajarao

    Hello Lisa,

I agree with the content not reflecting an action to be taken by the readers point. It is so important to get them engaged in the discussion or to pursue further and see what it is all about…rather than just plain text and no chance of interaction.

The timing of course is important as well, i read somewhere that instagram posts have the highest reads after college/school hours. That is when kids get off of classes and log on to their social media.

    Wonderful read. thanks.

    1. Hi Praveen, how have you been? Yes, interaction is key to generate engagement. Plus you get to know others that way too. It’s tough on the timing I think since we are global and when you get up and I get up may be different. But if you analyze your stats – Twitter, FB, Instagram and Google analytics it can help you time things better.
Thanks for coming by Praveen and have a great rest of the week!

    -Donna

    1. Hi Donna, I don’t think you do. Engagement is key for sure Donna. I think we buy from people we connect with and can trust. Oh yes, you have to be careful sometimes with those. I get many on Twitter trying to get me to buy or try a product without ever engaging first. Really? It’s like a stranger walking up to you and asking you to buy something.
Oh yes, I am the same with the timing Donna. Being online now is a 24/7 job.
Thanks for coming by Donna and I hope the rain doesn’t head your way from here. We got a lot of it today….

  23. Hi Lisa,

    #1 vibes with me.

Some fear selling on social so much that they hide their business. We are all allowed to sell on social, even if we are predominantly offering free blog posts, videos and podcasts. I make my courses, eBooks, audio books and services pages easy to find through my blog and of course link in to my blog regularly through social. No need to hide away. Or potential clients and customers will never find you.

Loving all these tips. Don’t hide away, but don’t go overboard with selling either. Find that just right zone where folks know you have premium goods to offer but your focus is simply on helping them with free content.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Ryan

    1. Hi Ryan. Yes – maybe some fear selling on social media if they have another full time job. That’s the one of the reasons I can think of. But others may just have that fear of selling period. Many people do NOT like to sell anything.
I think you do it right Ryan, you must follow that 80/20 rule because I don’t feel like you sell to me or anyone. You do charge for your eBooks but they are filled with valuable information. And you do give away some from time to time so people can “test” them out and then they will buy later like I have.
      You are welcome.
I appreciate you coming by Ryan, I know how busy you are! Enjoy the rest of your week there.
