First, What is Blogging?

Blogging is an online journal or informational website displaying information in reverse chronological order, with the latest posts appearing first, at the top.

A blog is a platform where a writer or a group of writers share their views on an individual subject or topic. It may include graphics, videos, and other means of expression online.

So why start a blogging hobby?

You Like To Write as Starting a Blogging Hobby

The first reason that blogging could be right for you is if you like to write. Blogging is going to require a lot of writing for you, which means that you are going to need to enjoy it.

You don’t have to type fast as long as you have the time to type up your posts every day.

If you are hoping to make some kind of income from your blog, then you need to be posting at least once per day, and building up a loyal follower base as you go.

If you like to write, then you might have tried to figure out how you could make something of this in the past but to no avail.

The good thing about a blog is that the only person that needs to believe in you is yourself, and if you do, then you’re going to succeed. Just make sure that you are writing clearly and communicating what you want to say effectively.

You Want To Share Your Stories

A lot of people find that blogging about the things they know is far easier than trying to blog about random things. This is your blog, and if you find it easier to write about what you know, then this is what you should stick to.

Don’t worry about what anyone else says at any point, you stay true to what you know you are best at. It might be the case that this turns into a travel blog, or it might be a life advice blog.

Or you may use it simply to share stories of your life that you would like other people to know.

Sharing your stories, whatever they are, could be more helpful to someone than you know. A lot of people read blogs looking for advice, or looking for people that they can relate to, so this is what you should try to offer.

  • Blogging is a great hobby to consider and you can also consider it as a profession if you’re getting decent results.

I started my blogging journey in 2005 and quit my full-time a couple of years ago as I was making a full-time living from blogging.

Blogging gives you freedom, helps you connect with other influencers in your niche, generates traffic and profits to your business, and the list goes on.

That being said, if someone is really expressive, they might even want to consider YouTube as another option. Great post as always Lisa!

    • Hi Anil, Nice to see you here, glad you are doing well! I didn’t realize you had been at it since 2005! I love the freedom blogging can give you once you get it going Anil. It took me many years to get there but once it did I never looked back. Thanks for coming by on this one and have a great day!

  • Hi Lisa!

I think that blogging makes an excellent hobby for many of the reasons that you’ve listed here.

One of my goals is to become financially independent, and for a long time I wanted to retire early. Of course, the lack of any work at all will surely cause me to get bored.

I’ve seen a number of retirees starting small blogging businesses to help keep them busy, and have something exciting to focus on. I thought that was really smart! I like to think that even if I eventually ‘retire’ one day, I’ll still have some sort of blogging presence simply because I enjoy it so much.

    • Hi James, That makes sense as I want to continue to blog when I retire. It will give me something to do and look forward to as well. I think that is what keeps many bloggers going is that they LOVE it, those that do not, quit! Thanks for coming by James and have a wonderful weekend.

  • Hi Lisa,

I dig all of these ideas because each plants a possible seed for blogging as a hobby.

Sometimes, simply entertaining an idea makes a light bulb go off. One minute, you never pondered blogging. But after reading your post, someone may realize how they love writing and see blogging as a fun hobby for self-expression.

This post also hits the mark because blogging needs that hobby-energy of detachment, relaxation and a pure joy for the action to build this into a full time venture. Perfect intent to build blogs on a solid foundation.

    Ryan

    • Hi Ryan, Ah yes, we know how seeds can sometimes grow Ryan! I began blogging like that and never thought of making any money from it. Little did I know how much work was involved or how much I’d enjoy it too 🙂 But it’s okay for folks to blog as a hobby too, not everyone wants to do all the work and try to make money. It can be stressful for some. You have to have a thick backbone 🙂 Thanks Ryan and have a great rest of your day there!
