Inspiring Mothers of Special Need Children Need Networks Too

Inspiring Mothers of Special Need Children Amaze Me

Inspiring Mothers-  It finally was a beautiful day here in Southern New England and I made myself get off the computer and go for a walk at a local track which I’ve been going to since I was in high school. It is a clay track and is much easier on the legs than regular paved tracks. I’m too afraid of big dogs to walk around in the neighborhood.

Inspiring Mothers

Upon my arrival I noticed a few mothers and children and more began to come. They were of all ages and were special need children. They often practice there for the Special Olympics. A few were close to me during the walk and the inspiring mothers seemed happy and encouraging their children to walk a little faster. Then they all got into a circle to stretch and began their competitions. Some were throwing balls and others walking.

I began to think of a dear friend of mine who has a special needs daughter. I don’t know how these moms do it. But I do know they all have a network. My friend has a large network on Facebook. She is able to connect with many other special need moms there and not have to worry about leaving the house and finding care for her daughter. You could tell by the group at the track today they knew each other well and could relate to one another. If you saw them without their children you would not know the strength they had carried to be these moms. All moms have a tough job but these inspiring moms have a super tough job.

It was estimated back in 2007 that 18.5 of children in the United States are of special need. That is about 1 in 5.  It could be higher today in 2012. These are children who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. (According to the Campaign for Children’s Healthcare, 2007) .

I believe these parents and inspiring mothers need time to get away and be themselves. I know my dear friend does on occasion. They dearly love their children but are needed 24/7 for years beyond what other moms have to do. So this Mother’s Day if you know an inspiring mother with a special needs children give her a call, send an email or card and try to schedule time to give her attention that she rarely gives herself.

Do you know other online networks that special need moms are part of ?

  • Hi Lisa, those above mothers are great and they must be rewarded. It is really amazing how they love and care their special need sons and daughters. I vow all the mothers including you.

  • It’s touching Lisa. But sorry, I don’t know about online networks.

I have known few of them closely in my life. Mothers expect their children to be good human beings and always besides to help achieve their children’s goals. But for these moms with children who needs special care, they have to fight all life for them. They have to devote their dreams and wants for their children. Those mothers worry about how they progress little by little compared to normal children and have to be patient more than anything else. And scared of future of her child without her.

Mostly I see they are likely to be ignored and isolated most days among others even they have friends. ‘Cause friends will grow up as usually and find new friends. But they still need to wait until someone finds them. Mothers have no big hopes for them, but they love and care them most…

Really glad for sparing your time for write about them…

    • Mayura, yes you do – Facebook is like one. And Twitter too. Maybe I should have said “social networks” for them. 🙂 Very good points you made about having to be more patient and about the hopes. Thanks for commenting on it.

Lisa, your post today really touched me. Thank you for bringing attention to moms of children with special needs. As one myself, we often feel so isolated that when we find a group of mothers that are going through the same challenges, no words have to be spoken…it is understood! Bless your heart for thinking of us all on this Mother’s Day! You are a beautiful soul!!!

  • Happy Mother’s Day Lisa! Hope you have a fabulous day! I’m not sure of any sites, sorry can’t help there.

  • Excellent post, Lisa.

    Happy Mother’s Day!
