Google Pagerank Updates After Panda And Penquins

Did You Notice The Google Pagerank Change Yesterday?

I learned on Twitter that Google made their recent Google pagerank update yesterday August 2, 2012. Have you checked out your website or blog yet? No change here.

Google pagerank update

If you saw the tweets yesterday about Google Pagerank you probably went to check out your website or blog’s ranking.

There has not been a lot of information out there on this latest Google update. A good source was WebProNews on the topic. There was more talk on some SEO forums and it looked like most were happy with their updates though maybe the ones who went down in pagerank didn’t want to blast it on the web either.

One thing I did notice on some websites was that other pages of the sites had pagerank as well. In the past many pages had none. That may be because of the “Freshness” that Google is looking for.

Is Google Pagerank the one factor to be stressed over? Yes and No. There is much controversy about it. It is just one of 200 factors on being found online. So if you did drop do remember that: 1 out of 200! The part that may be concerning is that some may not link to you if you have a 0 pagerank or run their ads on your website. Google does update periodically but with no set schedule. The last Google update took effect in May, 2012.

What can you do if you have not moved up or went down in Google pagerank?

  • Continue to produce fresh quality content
  • Make sure your sitemap is functioning (use Google Webmaster tools to check)
  • Make sure you do not have duplicate content from old pages or posts
  • Label all your images with alt image tags
  • Check out your keywords ranking, they could have changed over time

Have You Seen The New Structured Data?

Another new feature also rolled out just days ago from Google. It is called Structured Data. It can found in your Google Webmaster Tools. You can verify in your tools if Google is picking up your new markup or detect issues in your current one.

Google makes use of structured data in a number of ways including rich snippets which allow websites to highlight specific types of content in search results. – From The Google Webmaster Central Blog.

Have you noticed any change in your pagerank or traffic recently?

  • I agree with most of the stuff above. If you have great, fresh content, backlinks on high ranking relevant sites that you manually made, and you maintain/update your site each day you will do fine in the long run. As for the 1 of 200 thing…if you are competing for highly competitive keywords and phrases 1 point of 200 is still worth the effort imo. Good luck all.

  • Hey Lisa,

    No change for me either.

I don’t pay attention to Google Page rank – because it doesn’t matter to me much, like you mentioned it is one among the 200 factors out there.

But, I can see how it can be important (Many advertisers look at PR and Alexa, when it comes to buying ads).

Usually, I don’t pay attention to any SEO (I used to). But, for the past couple of days, I have been thinking about optimizing my posts, just my posts. After all, isn’t search engines a good traffic source too? As long as I keep it targeted with a good keyword, I will be able to avoid junk traffic.

Anyways, thank you for the post, Lisa!

  • This is actually the first time I’ve heard about the update. I haven’t noticed a thing on my site 🙂

On the other hand, I’m more focused on creating content and good long lasting relationships than ever before, and changes to google won’t have any effect on that 🙂

    • I believe you are right Jens on the creating content and relationships. I have tried to download your book but had some issues since I don’t have a kindle. I will try again later today. Really want to check it out 🙂

  • Very strange…my most popular page that just broke into the number 1 position last week after sitting at #3 for a while for a very competitive term went down 1 point in pagerank today. The only changes made were fresh content recently added and a few external links pointing to the page, The page was a pr3 now it is a 2, but the unique visitors entering through that page has gone up by 5 times in the last month….why would the page go down a point if google obviously likes it and pushed it to #1 for a very competitive key phrase??? The site has a pr4 for the homepage that stayed stable.

  • Hi Lisa. I’ve heard about the update, but to be totally honest with you I’m getting a bit ‘sick and tired’ over the fact how Google is basically ruling the internet’s content.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m for fresh and quality content. The thing I don’t really like is ‘some institution’ is ruling what I can or can’t do. I’m allergic to that.
P.s. in answer to your question? My page rank(s) did not change overnight. Guess I’m ok and you are too!. 😉

    • Hi Jan, yes I’m upset over the products with our retail sites about having to pay for those in search – only the big “businesses” will be able to afford it. Sad. I hope they re-think some of it. Yes, staying the same pagerank is better than going down 🙂

  • Hi Lisa,

Agree with Harleena 🙂 Informative and well you do your job well when new update arrives. My page rank has been up and glad to see it as I moved to new domain 3 weeks before. However I think page rank is a factor we should think about to see how well optimized our pages and content, but we don’t need to depend on it.

I’ve seen Structured Data on GWMT recently and it was introduced when Google +1 button arrives. A microformat like Facebook Open Graph. Well, search engines support both 🙂 Anyway Blogger now implementing it gradually too, so no worries 🙂

  • Informative post Lisa!

The surely was news to me, though I don’t find any difference in my page rank 🙁

I guess those who must have found a good change must be truly happy, while the others just need to take more care and follow the steps you suggested. Google’s structured data too seems like something I need to check in into.

    Thanks for sharing. 🙂
