Can You Start An Online Business Only Knowing Text And Email?

Text and Email Is All I Knew!

Guest Post By Susan from Euro Beads Boutique

text and email

Thank you, Lisa, for inviting me to do a guest blog and get beyond text and email. Without your expertise and “can do” attitude I probably would have quit the whole idea of my on-line boutique long before it even launched. It’s not so easy turning a hobby into a business. It’s even more difficult to be an entrepreneur in this age of ever-changing information technology. I discovered that a significant start-up “cost” was learning my way around the virtual world which has a lingo and logic all its own. The extent of my technical knowledge was limited to text and mail – Texting on a cell phone and maintaining an email account. I had no clue what surfing the net meant!

Flash Forward to 2012 – Beyond the Text and Email

Building my European glass bead and charms collection has been quite enjoyable. I love photographing and cataloging new charms. It was my digital camera that opened up the world of photography to me. From the start my inventory system was based on digital pictures and easily organized. Thus, I naively assumed that the most difficult part of maintaining my website would be coming up with names for each charm. Surely the computer would save me time! But, alas, though technology has made our lives easier in some very important ways, staying “connected” comes at a cost. I had to move beyond the text and email stage.

Faster ways of searching, connecting, branding and engaging with potential customers require merchants to devote many hours per day responding to the virtual world of computer marketing. Our performance is constantly measured by ever-changing metrics and algorithyms. We are advised that to be “successful” we must be active on the networking sites. Here’s the short list: Facebook, Fan Page, Twitter, Linked-in, Google+, Interest, Blogging.

In our digital virtual reality we’re to be available in all dimensions, 24/7. Here’s the clincher, even if you are familiar with all the social, marketing and business networks, a week later your knowledge will be outdated! One upgrade or enhancement can cause a major domino effect. It’s hard to be competent and up to date with all applications. The best I’ve managed is to stay actively engaged on my Facebook Fan Page and work diligently on my website. Yes, I feel guilty that I’ve barely sent out any tweets lately or logged into my Linked-in account. I’ve accepted that it will always be a juggling act. Not  as simple as text and email have been.

At night I turn my laptop off. When I wake up the next day I fully expect that the virtual world has changed once again. This used to set me off in a panic. Now I treat it as a given and rely on “Inspire to Thrive” to point me in the right direction!

Interesting website. It sounds like you actively find situations to run through the rumor mill? Our missions seem to be mismatched. You didn’t mention how your business started or how social networking has played a role. That would me more interesting to me than to read about rumors.

  • Hi Susan,
I have a strong IT background and first learned to program using punch cards. (I’m showing my age here. 🙂 ) I also have a strong rooted urge to help people who may be intimidated by the Internet to become self efficient. All most people really need is a little confidence. Nowadays, with powerful software programs like WordPress, you don’t need to be a computer geek to manage your own website and take control of your destiny (so to speak).

    Great post!

    • Hi Sherryl,
Nice to meet you! I’m with you on the age thing as well~ to do a regression analysis we had to punch in a 4 inch stack of punch cards with tons of data and wait a day or two to get the results! We used a VAX. PC’s weren’t invented at the time so we had to use typewriters and snail mail. We’ve come a long way! I understand why social networking is so important to today’s marketing, but the pace of change can be frustrating. I spend 90% of my time doing administration and 10% of my time creating jewelry. I like my WordPress website, but I’m now at a point where I have to “upgrade” to the newest version. Apparently this will require my entire site to be tweaked. It’s not something I can do by myself. I want to be self-sufficient, but the ever-changing metrics and upgrades require knowledge that I don’t have. Lisa is curious and loves to discover and try out the new apps. I’m so glad she’s in my corner!

  • Hey Susan, I completely agree with your point here in this article. Being active on social media and increase engagement isn’t as simple as text and email. The knowledge always gets outdated after sometime when an upgraded causes.

  • It was my pleasure, Lisa. Thank you for helping me move out of my comfort zone! I enjoyed meeting the women who left comments. They all have awesome blogs!
Susan Condon recently posted..The Color of the Month is Teal!My Profile

    • Yes they really do Susan, glad you got to meet some of my friends I’ve met along the way. Something I did not expect when I first started blogging – to have some wonderful friends online. I’ve met one so far in person. Hope to meet more in the future. Thanks Again!

  • Susan, Thank you so much for doing a guest post here and sharing your experiences with your website. It sure is not as easy as it would seem. I know I was very overwhelmed in the beginning setting the sites up and learning Twitter and Facebook. Once a few things caught on that was all I needed to explore more and learn something new everyday. Glad I was able to keep you going and hope you will continue to enjoy doing your beads. If we didn’t like what we do we could not continue doing it.

  • Adrienne, nice to meet you! Thank you so much for your encouragement! It’s true, the younger generation is completely comfortable with computers and applications. As my daughter once said to me, “Mom, we’re young. We’re supposed to have cutting edge technology!” (And guess who gets to pay for it?) Ah to be young again. It’s embarrassing when the kids know more than I do, but I’m willing to keep plugging along, knowing that at some point I will be more comfortable with it all.

Adrienne, I enjoyed reading your blog! I admire that you are brave enough to be doing Beta testing!! I suspect CommentLuv is another application I should learn! All in due time, that’s my mantra for now.

  • Hi Susan,

Boy, you are not alone. I think the younger generation tend to take to the computer so much easier since they grew up with one practically but for those of us that are older, it’s been an ever changing learning experience.

I applaud you for hanging in there and creating your bead business. You are right, it’s people like Lisa that can continue to fill us in on the latest and greatness new things so we don’t have to try and figure all this out on our own.

    Here’s to all your success.

  • Corina,
I’m so glad you can relate! I’m impressed that you’ve only been doing this for 6 mos! Your site is awesome and I love the concept. There’s definitely a market for work-at-home jobs! So glad to meet you! I think Lisa would be amazed at how many people she’s already helped! Good karma, don’t you think?
Susan Condon recently posted..The Color of the Month is Teal!My Profile

  • Hi Susan,

I can totally relate to your post! I started my website and blogging about 6 months ago with no experience whatsoever, which is why I’ve also latched on to Lisa and her blog. There’s so much to learn and I love how she puts it together to make it easy to understand! I also take my laptop to bed because I feel there’s something I”m going to miss.

I haven’t hit my panic button lately, although this week has certainly tested my growth! I realized the beauty of what I’m doing is that I”m helping others plus I’m my own boss and it’s okay to sleep 😀 and people like LIsa will be there to “Inspire To Thrive”! Have a great day!

  • You really nailed it!

At night I turn my laptop off. When I wake up the next day I fully expect that the virtual world has changed once again.

It’s overwhelming. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve wasted on the Internet looking up stuff I know nothing about. That’s why I always need an Inspire to Thrive fix.

I don’t have an online business but when I started blogging a couple years back, I had no idea what I was doing or getting into.
