Twitter Absolutely More BoringIs Twitter Absolutely More Boring To Non- Users and What Can Twitter Do Better?

There has been a lot in the news lately about Twitter’s stock. The stock should have gone up since their earnings were up. Twitter is making money with their advertising platform. But the company’s stock, however, traded sharply lower following the report’s release. CFO of Twitter Anthony Noto stated there will be a “considerable period of time” before Twitter sees sustained user growth.

I asked the question on my Facebook page after to my friends who are Twitter non-users. Some of them signed up but just don’t use the platform regularly. Why are some people finding Twitter absolutely more boring than Facebook today? Why are they not using this social network?

  1. Some people find Twitter absolutely more boring than Facebook. Maybe not enough of their friends are NOT on the Twitter network? Or do they find it hard to use?
  2. Some people did not want to learn another platform. Could it be information overload? Or is Twitter that hard to understand and use?
  3. Some people felt like they used the internet too much already. They wanted to spend more time offline. They did not want to spend more time online. That’s a hard one to overcome for any social network.

“It seems pretty obvious that if you turn Twitter into Facebook, it will not be as successful as Facebook, because…

What Can Twitter Do Better?

  1. Advertise their message more clearly on places like Facebook.
  2. Engaged with new users when they begin their journey on Twitter. Maybe new users would not find Twitter absolutely more boring than Facebook.
  3. Ensure that Twitter is not boring! Keep it fresh and moving for all users.

  • Twitter is really a powerful platform for bloggers to share and get traffic for blog posts. More retweets and more followers are sure indication of your success.

  • Hi Lisa
I have been using twitter since 2010 and initially I found it very informative because it was unlike Facebook. We get lots of connections from there and lots of new things to grasp. Twitter might be boring for Non-users but its still very good and an informative place for us.

    Thank you

  • Twitter has been around for quite some time now and when I first started using twitter, I just thought it was people tweeting about what they were doing all day, which was not entertaining to me at all. It was actually quite boring, but alot of celebrity gossip and other things has made twitter more popular. I really like what some of the people were stating, like adding rewards to people who are extremely active on twitter. Empire Avenue is a great way to reward and make the experience using the website useful, fun, and engaging. I have not noticed any big adjustments with twitter, it may just be me not noticing though.

    • Hi Barry, that would bore me too if I followed people who just tweeted about what they were doing all day – which sometimes happens on Facebook 🙂 I had forgotten about Empire Avenue, haven’t used that in a long time. Thanks for your input on this one with that. The biggest recent adjustment is letting anyone DM you and adding more than 140 characters to the DM’s which I am not a fan of. I’ve been getting more salesey messages ever since it started this week. I hope you have a fantastic weekend Lawrence!

  • Hi Lisa,
I think I love twitter the way it is but I’ll be happy if they can extend their limit to the number of words one can tweet. The 140 words limit is really small.

Apart from that, I do not have any other problem with them for now.

    Thanks for sharing.

BTW: It’s been awhile, hope you’re doing good?

  • Hi Lisa,

For years I felt Twitter was a complete waste of time; and I was WRONG!

It just took using the platform, getting used to it and interacting with people. I’ve had some amazing conversations and I’ve met some tremendous people on live Twitter Chats.

It really comes down to just learning something that at first feels a little foreign because it doesn’t have a traditional wall like Facebook or LinkedIn.

I’m sure there are other reasons but like I said I overcame my stereotype and now I LOVE it and use it the most of all my social media.

    Have an awesome week Lisa!

    • Hi Don, Oh yes, those Twitter chats are great! I need to do more of them myself. I’ve met some wonderful people via Twitter and use it almost daily. I’ve been taking breaks on weekends. I always found it easier than Facebook to use. Facebook makes so many changes quickly that it can be hard to keep up with them. Thanks for coming by Don, I just got my internet service back today – been a week without from thunderstorms. Feels good to be using a desktop once again 🙂 Have a great rest of the week Don.

  • Hi Lisa,

I agree with Brenda. Twitter is more to for business purposes rather than personal. I was the user of Twitter and I started using it regularly. But, I did not post personal stuff in it. I think, it is not the place for that.

Indeed, when I first use Twitter, it was very boring. Even I do not understand how it works. It took some time for me to understand about it. 😆

Honestly, I’m more like Facebook than Twitter. I can chat freely with my friends in there..hehe 😀

One time it was a picture of a summer drink Del’s Lemonade and it got a bunch of retweets. I never thought it would. Other times quotes or news items from blogs get a lot of retweets. I still love Twitter better and I’ve met some real wonderful people from around the world there. I will then connect with them on Facebook. I find Facebook more for family and friends though their advertising platform is quite amazing now for bloggers and small businesses to use. Thanks for coming bny and have a great day Nanda.

  • Hello Lisa,

I like your take on this by adding some Twitter conversation 🙂 Personally i love Twitter so i wouldn’t be the one to judge about this one. But i agree, people on Facebook tend to like to connect with people they know.

Twitter on the other hand is a great place to connect with new and interesting people from all over the world. That’s why i love it so much. And the 140 characters keeps it really simple and forces you to be creative.

I don’t see a lot of advertising for joining Twitter. Maybe they should spend a little more advertising budget on that instead of retargeting me for paid advertisements ;-p.

So have to agree with Brenda that Twitter is great for biz and blogging / authors etc. who want to network. Maybe that’s a small target market, but the engagement on Twitter is excellent so i really hope they become profitable.

Thanks for the great share. By the way, may i ask what plugin you use to embed Tweets like that? I’d love to know that one! 🙂

  • Hi Lisa,
Yes, twitter is more boring platform, Count me too with your boring Twitters.
Even me too, just have an account but very rare to visit..
Although I visit to twitter, it’s very hard to post anything there, as the main home screen move fastly. It’s annoying.
Also the restricted number of words (I think 140 words) keep me away from post some interesting news.
FB is much more better than twitter, I guess.

  • Hey Lisa,

I think for most people is about the convenience of Twitter. Some say it’s too fast to keep up with the while others are more attracted to Facebook and Google+ because of the layout for comments, videos, and images.

Like I mentioned before, the mobile app made it a lot more convenient and fun to use as oppose to using it on the desktop. It’s just as exciting as getting a text message from someone, but with more features.

There were a couple of bloggers that pointed out that twitter is good for headlines. If your copywriting skills are up to par, then this will definitely attract your target market. And the fact that twitter allows you do add images now as well as adding short videos using Vine makes your tweets more engaging.

This was a great roundup Lisa and it was interesting to see what others thought about this!

  • Hi Lisa,

It was reported in today’s (06 – Aug – 2015) newspapers here in India that Twitter may experience a hostile takeover due to its stock trading at an all-time low price. Hence, when I read the lines in your Blog post excerpt in Kingged I was just drawn in for a read.

You have a beautifully, clean and well laid Blog site, Lisa, enjoyed the read there.

I’ve always found Twitter a little bit of an enigma. Even after I did quite a bit of learning about how to engage with an audience on Twitter and about Twitter marketing techniques I still find it a bit strange.

The really tough stuff for any digital marketer is to consistently engage with Twitter followers using 140 characters of which a chunk of characters will go into a tiny URL. Hence, post in post out, four times a day, arresting interest, in 100 characters or less is a huge challenge.

Crafting Twitter Ads is as big a challenge as well.

Initially there was a ton of excitement about a Tweet simply because it was restricted to 140 characters, perhaps this limitation is now what is causing Internet marketers to look of Ad placement or customer engagement elsewhere.

If an event is taking place, and there are a constant stream of tweets and re-tweets, if you are monitoring the Twitter stream it does become a pretty boring after a while.

Thanks for voicing your POV here Lisa. I’m sure there are a lot of Internet users who would agree.

I came to your site via a link on Kingged.com

  • I can live or without social media. I use it for awhile, then I stop sometimes for months at a time. The majority of the people I know use Facebook rather than Twitter. To me I would think it would be popular with the younger generation and folks that are into text messaging.

I do like it’s simplicity though. I swear Facebook has so many different settings compared to what it used to have years ago I still don’t know if I have it set the way I want. With Twitter there really isn’t too many, and not as confusing settings. At least in my opinion.

It is a little tough to follow what’s going on at times though, and I don’t even know what some of the abbreviations or whatever they call them mean.

If something is going on Twitter is usually the first place to find out about something right away in real time.

I suppose if I were 10-20 years younger or so Twitter along with all the other social media sites would appeal to me more than what it does now.

    • Hi Ray, sow you go months without? I can do days without 🙂 but not many. I agree about Facebook having so many settings and I find more lurkers too.
I think Twitter is easier but many people don’t get it.
Thanks for your input on this Ray and have great day!

      • Yeah I know that’s along time to go without for some people. I don’t know why. I get tuned into it for awhile, then I lose interest. I get busy working on projects and don’t seem to have time.

I still prefer email though because I have a difficult time with the character limit, but it seems like many people would rather get a hold of you by means of social media rather than email these days. Sometimes I miss those notifications too. I don’t know if my email blocks them or what, but I know I don’t get them all.
Ray recently posted…The One Page Website, Multiple Domains, And $100 Per DayMy Profile

        • Hi Ray, I bet you are not alone in doing that. I still use email but prefer texts or tweets, just a little quicker and I’m a person of few words. Thanks for coming back to explain and have a great week ahead.

  • Hey Lisa,

I LOVE Twitter and I can see where people who don’t use it would find it confusing. Especially if they just go to Twitter itself and try to have conversations. Because the stream is SO fast and they’re not using a third party platform to have a better user experience then people can find it overwhelming.

I didn’t like it at first, I just didn’t get it. Of course I was going to Twitter itself and all the tweets were mostly either just advertisements or stupid tweets like I’m leaving now to go to the store. I hate advertisements and who cares if you’re going to the store. LOL!!!

But I think if Twitter itself could be functionally better like if you’re using TweetDeck or Hootsuite then people would have a much better experience. Like I mentioned in my response, I go off the lists I’ve created so they aren’t as fast and you can actually have more conversations. Just trying to follow the one Twitter stream on their main site, well anyone would find that confusing.

I don’t access it with my mobile device so I’m of no use there but I think you did great getting everyone’s opinions. Great job Lisa and maybe we don’t really want more users on it! 😉

    Have a great week.

Not a good way to start my day. Amazing how much other stuff can get done though. I hope your week is going well there and stay cool!

      • Hey Lisa,

I think if more people knew about them or understood why they’re needed then they might have a much more enjoyable user experience.

Oh bless your heart. My internet was on and off all day yesterday here and we weren’t having any weather issues. It was off more than on and SO frustrating so I understand what you mean. When you have no internet you have no choice then to do other things but boy will that ever put you behind.

Hope it’s on sooner than they are saying.

  • Hi Lisa –

I think every single social media site has it’s place. With that being said, the type of people you connect and engage with are different as well.

As a blogger, I’ve always believed that I can attract different types of people with Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter. The audience is a little different too which I think it’s pretty cool. It’s diverse as well.

Of course, Facebook is the king of them all but at the same time, Twitter is very under utilized as far as a platform to promote your products and services.

In the beginning, I wasn’t a fan of Twitter. That all changed 2 years ago is when I started to fall in love with Twitter. So to answer your question, I can see why some will believe that Twitter is boring. But at the end of the day, it’s all about what you make out of it. You can choose to use it or not.

Awesome post and have an awesome week!

    • Hi Nate, that is so true, you choose to make it boring or not – I so believe in choices. It is under utilized as many do not understand the power of Twitter and what can be done with it. It’s true too each platform has different users with different needs, etc. Thanks for coming by and have a great rest of the week.

  • Hi Lisa,

I remembering hearing about Twitter’s stock in the news. It was kind of shocking because to me it just seems more people are on Twitter than any other social network out there.

I think Twitter could use some new features but not do away with the old ones. I would like to see more characters – at least to 150-180. Other than that, I love Twitter just the way it is. 🙂

I love using the Twitter platform but I use Hootsuite because I have all my social pages there so, it’s more of an easy access thing.

You got some great feedback from your question. Thanks for sharing those. I like to see, or read what others think :).

  • Hey Lisa,
An interesting piece you have shared about Twitter being boring to users.

If you ask me, I will want Twitter to improve by creating new features that will give users the ability to share more expanded tweets.

The restrictions on 140 words is sure a discouragement for many would have loved to be very active on the social media platform!

I left the above comment in kingged.com as well.

  • Hi Lisa,

I have that love/hate thing when it comes to Twitter. It’s too fast for me to make sense out of anything. I know how powerful it is and I do use it, but not one of my primary social sites.

I started using images and they were shared quite well. The reason I am getting back into action is because I have an app on my phone so I can go on it on my “down time.”

Other than that, I share things that I read, like this on the Twitter platform. Just wish I could write more than a few words

  • Hey Lisa! Thanks for the shoutout!

Quite frankly, I love Twitter the way it stands. I’m sure more features could be added, but I don’t think that will bring the non-Twitter users there. Imo, each social network platform is geared for different folks. I see Twitter for businesses, bloggers, and promotions. Google+ for authors, writers, bloggers, and businesses. And even though I do get the majority of my blog traffic from Twitter and Facebook, I think FB is more of a “keeping up with friends/family” application as well as blog promotions. I don’t think Twitter is hard to understand, however, as someone who introduced her husband to it, he generally uses it to just read his feed and even that, not so much anymore.

I know some have mentioned Rewards but won’t that take away from the essence of Twitter as it stands today? What are your thoughts on the subject, Lisa?

    Btw, Happy Monday!

Many do not understand it, the language, etc. They don’t take the time to learn it either. They give up quickly. I’m not sure on rewards either. I think people have to truly be interested in it and their feeds. If they find stuff they are interested in – I believe they will want to learn it and ultimately use it. Thanks for your feedback and shares today on it Brenda. I hope your Monday wasn’t too bad!
