How To Get More Social Shares Today with a Magic Number

Do You Want More Social Shares?

more social sharesDo you wonder how some bloggers get so many more social shares on their posts? I noticed some posts lately reaching into the thousands of shares. Do you wish you could have more social shares on your own blog posts? I asked a few bloggers who get a lot more social shares than average on their posts how often they share their own.

If you have read my blog for years you know how I love the 80/20 rule. I share 80% of others posts and 20% or less of my own.

If you are not sure how many shares a post or page has received there is a FREE tool called LinkTally from HubSpot that can tell you. (You do have to provide an email address for it.)

The numbers below from these bloggers may surprise you!

Ryan BiddulphRyan Biddulph – From Blogging From Paradise.

I share new blog posts 4 to 5 times daily, for one day, on Twitter. On Facebook, and Google Plus, I share posts once to my accounts. I may also share posts to a few Google Plus Communities too.
As for overall sharing I do the Evergreen Post Planner bit, so between that and my Triberr shares, I am roughly 1:1 I reckon. I don’t get too caught up on ratios though; I just go with the flow.

Blogger Ian ClearyIan Cleary – from Razor Social.
Twitter – 3 times first day, twice second day, 1 week later and then once a month.
Facebook – Twice in the first week and then once every couple of months.
Google+ – Once and then again every couple of months.

Sue Ann DunlevieSue Anne Dunlevie – From Successful Blogging.
Facebook – 2xday my old posts; 2 times a day others (use Buffer).
Pinterest – 12 pins a day mine; 4 pins a day others (use Tailwinds).
Twitter – 15x day from other Triberrs (automatically with $ plan); 4x day my older posts; 10x day other blog posts (Buffer/Tweetdeck).
G+ – 1x day my posts, plus one 15 a day in one session (Buffer and G+ directly).
no Instagram or YouTube.

Blogging WizardAdam Connell – From The Blogging Wizard.

I don’t have a set amount for Twitter, but I’d probably say on average: Twitter – 5. Facebook – 1. Google+ 1.

These figures only include my personal accounts. I do have branded accounts but it’s difficult to give an average on those. That’s in total for my personal accounts. Over a period of 1 day to 45 days.  For popular posts I’ll go back and schedule additional shares although that number varies.

Dedicated to LifeIrish Carter – From Dedicated to Life

I have a social media manager who posts my articles out on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn approximately 5 times a week.  The following week that most current post is only promoted maybe 3-4 times on these.  The following week it is promoted 2-3 times and onward.  She does this so the older posts are continuing to be promoted.

I also use Triberr to help my work in being promoted.  My social media manager uses Hootsuite to schedule all the posts she promotes.

Mayura4Ever Mayura DaSilva – From Mayura4Ever.

I do share my posts on Twitter, Facebook and Google+, but only once per post as in to notify the new post :) I used to share away old content on my personal Twitter profile, but not anymore.

Mostly readers / visitors promote my content.

Adrienne SmithAdrienne Smith – From Adrienne Smith.net

I share my own blog posts as follows:

Twitter – 8 times per week. Facebook – 1 time per week. Google+ – 1 time per week. LinkedIn – 1 time per week.

I share it 1 time only in several private groups.

The Blogging SpellAbrar Mohi Shafee – From the Blogging Spell.com

“I use variety of social sites to promote my blog posts but I prefer to keep the frequency to one per account in a month period. The reason is that my social media audiences are same and what I will share once or twice will initially stay within them.
Sharing a post daily or once per three days or a week via same account would look over self-promotion and might result into some bad impression, as I think.
So, what I try to do is indirect promotion. For example, I try to persuade people to visit my blog and convince them to share my blog posts by the quality of my content. In this way, I can achieve the same (more shares) without looking like self-concerned.
However, when a post gets older, it is better to share it for one more round to keep it up and evergreen.”

More Social Shares – Are You Surprised by the Numbers?

Are you surprised these seasoned bloggers are mostly sharing 1 to 5x per day for Twitter and less on the other social networks? I certainly was. I would say the magic number is 4 tweets on a new post to get more social shares. (Remember that tweets have a short life!)

How often do you share your own posts? How many social shares do you average per post?

Really a nice and informative post Lisa. Its my first time in your blog and Im loving it already.
For me, I used to share an article to major social networks after I published it. I had never even thought of resharing it times and again in some intervals. Now i know that resharing can really help, thanks to this article. Im going to use these methods.
    Thanks again..

    Hi Lisa,

I learned two new things right at the start of your Blog post. I love this when it happens. All too often the introductory paragraphs Blog post can meander a bit until the Blogger hits their stride.
    1) Share 80% of others Blog posts
    2) The LinkTally tool from HubSpot
    After this I was hooked.

I must say I was completely surprised at the extent that other (authority Bloggers) were sharing content. I think I have completely underestimated the power of the process of sharing. I’ve noticed a Blogger named Sherman Smith (active on Kingged) doing this and I was planning to write to him and ask what made him do this. He’s shared a lot of my Blog posts on G+ which I noticed and I was curious why.

Boy! did I get educated after reading this Blog post.

BTW, I came to this Blog post via a link on Kingged.

Hi Ivan, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. I try to keep it simple here – glad you noticed. Oh yes, share away we must. I had been guilty of not sharing my own stuff enough and these interviews were proof of that to me. Sherman is awesome with the shares too. So glad you learned some things here Ivan. I hope you have a nice weekend and thanks for taking the time to comment on this one.

    Hi Lisa,

It’s great to see you having come up with a topic that has been a mystery to me for a long time. Here I have found the key to successfully getting shared. I’ve learnt points that I think I never knew about.

I will also be using the Linktally to get more inroads into the world of social sharing. It is perhaps a new territory for me – after all we are always learning in the process!

Thanks for this post! Have a great day!

  • Hi Lisa,

I love this post! You interviewed some heavy hitters here and it was so awesome of them to share their routine with us. I got some great ideas here and now I have to go and implement them :).

You’re also getting some great feedback in the comments. I was reading through them and Tim’s comment really made sense.

Thanks for putting this together for us. Hope you’re having a great week so far!

I still love using Triberr and only share relevant stuff. So far not too bad. I hope things are well with you Corina. I know you have some rough times too. Hope to see you back in the socialverse!

I’ve been playing by the laws of twos combined with analytics.

I share each post to Twitter twice the day it runs, then 2 days later, than again at 2 months.

I don’t do Linkedin or G+ anymore because it just doesn’t work for me. I think those are better places for community.

I share to Facebook once when it runs, but then I’ll re-run the best performing posts over time based on analytics.

I’ve also eased off of using automatic Tweeting of older posts . Like Facebook, I only re-run the top performing posts based on analytics.

Hi Susan, nice to see you here again! Interesting about using those places as community. I have found retweeting old posts to increase my traffic lately. I choose only the really good performing ones too of course. Thanks for your input on this one Susan and hope all is well with you.

I’ve never thought about the number of shares, but I would guess I’m doing something like you. I have read a lot about the 80/20 rule and I haven’t implemented it into my business just yet, but I’m working hard to make it part of everything I do.

I am using Triberr and that’s mostly how I share things on Twitter. It’s probably closer to 90/10 on Twitter :)

    Hi Lisa,

I’m very poor in the social department – at least that’s what my Analytics report project…when last I checked, of the four principal sources of blog traffic, social media was the least….

    The very least!

However, reading the various opinions sampled here, it appears that sharing more of the content of others is actually key that will ensure yours is shared too…In the coming days, I intend to improve, share more of other’s content and maybe, things will improve.

It’s a pleasure being here after a nice, long break.

  • Richard Martin says:

    Gotta say this Lisa.

I’m wholly skeptical about the whole social share thing. I’ve had emails from people telling me about their latest blog post, I go across and they already have hundreds of social shares. How?

I guess this is either done by paid, sharing sites like Triberr or plugins that allow you to dishonestly show however many shares you care to show.

Same with showing how many fans people have. I see a new blog that has been going for 3 months recently – they had 3k followers on Twitter! I digress.

Interesting to hear how the pros share out their own content though. Nice roundup. I’ll share this :-)

Hi Richard, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. Maybe they send their emails hours after hitting the publishing button? I know I sometimes send the following day depending on time. I don’t feel Triberr is fake but I know some folks do. I only share quality stuff from there myself. Now as far as plugins, interesting – I hadn’t thought of that. Do you know which plugin that could do that as an example? I think some of the new blogs that have a lot may be due to the fact there is more than 1 person that owns or publishes the blog. I see blogs with multiple bloggers that seem to do very well in that area. It only makes sense if more than one is sharing from the same site, right?
Thanks for coming by Richard and for your input on this topic! Have a great weekend ahead.

    Hi Lisa,

I’m constantly amazed how many people share my posts on Twitter, Google Plus and on LinkedIn. But I think you’re right, the magic is just as much or more in sharing others content. It earns new followers, sharers and readers / listeners / viewers.

I do everything manually. I love it that way. I find so many interesting articles and things people are sharing and it gives me a reason to engage with them in different spaces.

More social shares… you can bet I’m all for that!

Thanks Lisa for sharing how others do it.

Absolutely great ways to get more social shares. It is the secret that you got more shares to your blog posts than other bloggers. Interviewing the bloggers and getting social shares is really a nice idea and most of the time bloggers will share your blog post as you give them special treatment by interviewing them.

I opened linktally.com and I find it very easy to use. You just need to provide the link and your email address before you get the result.

Anyway, the bloggers listed above that share us how many times they share their blog post over different social media platforms in a month, week and day.

These bloggers use different ways to share their blog posts online. There are also tools available for free.

Social shares are indeed appealing when the results we crave for is pouring in, I concur with Sunday’s opinion.

    Hi Lisa

I use CoSchedule to share my own stuff. I share much more on Twitter than I do on any other network because things move so fast. I usually share 3 to 4 of my own posts per day on Twitter and one per day on the other sites.

I use Buffer to schedule stuff from other people (10 per day on Twitter and 2 per day on other networks). I also share a few things using Swayy and immediately to Twitter using Meshfire.

Since I decided to leave Triberr my Twitter shares have plummeted. However, I now feel like every share I get is earned and any traffic I get from Twitter is more targeted.

    Hi Lisa,

I’ve been looking forward to this post, as I still have to learn so much on promotion. Again to learn how many social platforms they are promoting on. May be, a new post 😉

Interesting insights coming from bloggers on promoting posts, even in the comment section. Thanks for reaching me out on inquiring my preference too dear. Quite the lowest figures

Mmm… I was hoping to read the sharing preference of yours too 😉 Since you’re so active on social media, especially on Twitter and Pinterest. Do you use Instagram for blogging as well?

Everyone has their own methodology on promotion and has to adapt over time. Isn’t it? Some bloggers are sharing everywhere including groups, communities and forums to spread the word and they are getting more attention as I’ve witnessed. Automation benefits ’em. Makes sense on the multiple tweets a day as well. I’ve noticed that some popular sites are started to share 2X or more on Facebook too.

Hmm… I think nowadays bloggers doesn’t seek alternatives such as buying shares to manipulate the numbers too. Haven’t heard such stories lately :) That’s a good thing. Not many participate on blogging directories as I feel. Remember when we blogging a few years back? Blogging directories were much popular :)

Thanks for the wonderful round up, Lisa :) Hope everyone will be intrigued to find their magic numbers.

    Cheers…

I also share on Linkedin as well. I’m always cautious about sharing too much or often on Facebook. I think it turns some people off.

    Hi Lisa,
Getting more social shares today is appealing, especially when the results we crave for is pouring in! However, the results we get still depends on how consistent we are with the shares.

Using the right tools, using the right platforms and remaining consistent are factors we must not ignore!

Its different strokes for different folks when it comes to what each of the bloggers mentioned above do to get more social shares. Each of these bloggers readily apply what works best for him/her.

Nevertheless, we can tap into the consistency factor on the right platform applied by each of them!

  • Hey Lisa,

I’ve always wondered this myself. It looks like the average blogger here shares their own blog posts less than I do.

Personally I share my blog posts about 8 times a day on twitter and facebook. They’re a mixed of older posts that are a week to a year old. This is through Revive Old Post plugin.

But besides that usually the community of bloggers I know share my blog posts.

Thanks for doing this survey! It definitely answered my question. Have a good one Lisa!

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for including me and from reading what everyone else is doing then I feel like I’m right on track. Of course I think we can get away with it on Twitter much more because it’s so fast and we’re not all on there all day long. You want to be sure and share it more so that it will at least have a better chance of being seen.

Some of these other platforms I think you have to be more cautious to not overdo our own sharing but it’s so much better when you leave that up to your community. Oh yeah, that’s why having one is SO great.

Enjoyed this post and great job here my friend. Have a terrific week.
