Twitter Growth – Adds 16 Million New Users Last Quarter

Twitter Growth Expands

The Twitter growth rumor was that Twitter had reached it’s popularity peak. If you saw the news yesterday from the WSJ you would have read how their user growth picked up last quarter. These users also logged in at least once per month. Twitters shares rose 29% after hours to more than their first day closing price on the New York Stock Exchange.

Twitter believes this happened due to people’s shift to mobile. 78% of users are using Mobile according to EndGadget.com. Tweeting on mobile makes it so easy to log in daily and check your feed and tweet away. They doubled their ad revenue as well this past quarter. Mobile ads make up 81% of that revenue as well. They are still not near Facebook or Google for ad revenues yet.

Why The Twitter Growth Now?

The World Cup was one reason many users signed up for Twitter. You could find all kind of coverage and interaction between people on this one. The is also an increase in world conflicts and news that can dominate Twitter at times like these. Twitter also claims “syndicated viewers”, people who see tweets while reading news sites or watching television broadcasts has also increased. They also claim that the Twitter growth can be attributed to being the world’s real-time information network.

  • Lisa, my favourite social network has been twitter, since it is easy to send short engaging tweet. And I really love it on mobile. And I think the world cup has a lot to do with the growth of twitter and I hope it remains so.

That’s where have been spending much of my time compared to other network and am really loving it

  • Amazing facts, Well I’m been using twitter since a long time but I’m not active at twitter as I’m at facebook. But its really great to know about the growth of twitter users.

    Thanks

  • Hey Lisa,

I just purchased through SmashWords, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Later will dig in after dinner with my husband and son.

    Talk to you soon,

  • Hi Lisa,

Wow, Twitter’s growth is just staggering when you sit down and think about it.

It doesn’t surprise me one bit that there were tons of sign-ups to Twitter because of the World Cup soccer tournament that only happens every four years just like the Olympics. Our family tuned into every single match, and I can only imagine the activity on Twitter during this time.

I access Twitter on my desktop and definitely use it everyday. Yes, I do think it will grow even more especially as they improve their ad network.

Thank you for sharing this article–I enjoyed it. I wish you all the best with your e-book– That’s great! Am getting it now…

    Have a great afternoon,
    Take care,

  • Hi Lisa,

    Congrats for the new eBook.;)

We all know that Twitter is an amazing social network for business owners, news seekers and else.
I think Twitter is going to reach another peak because now a days most of people are using it via their mobiles.

Connecting with mobile is a great push to Twitter.
In earlier days it was really hard to tweet via mobile.

Millions of new people will join Twitter for their own interest.

    Have a nice weekend.:)

    • Thanks Ravi – I’m glad I finally got it done. But glad I had to postpone as many new things happened in Twitter from Jan-June. I think you are right, it still has a way left to grow even further. That’s the key Rravi, people need to use Twitter for their interests to stay active and engaged there. I do Twitter training at my day job and remind people of that. Follow things you are interested in and engage. Otherwise they may never tweet. Thanks for your input and have a great new week ahead. (I did have a nice weekend, thanks!)

  • Hi Lisa,

I had no idea that Twitter was growing at that level. In fact, I don’t look at the stats for social media at all. I know that Facebook is huge, but that’s about it. Twitter is still my #1 when it comes to the time I spend and people I connect with, and the traffic I’m receiving – so it’s great that it’s still growing.

  • Twitter is indeed the real time news configuration. I log mostly from mobile as it is easy to tweet on the go. Most of the times, the things I need to tweet comes at random times, so mobile seems the only option.

Elections, world cups are some of the things when people find twitter most effective for any information in real time.

I am happy that twitter is gaining more exposure and increasing it’s revenue. It deserves it.

    • Hi Rohan, I use my mobile a lot too but when I’m on the desktop I rely a lot on my lists to help me stay organized. Elections are a great time for Twitter for sure! I am too, I love Twitter the best of all the social media network sites out there. I hope they don’t change it too much either. Thanks for your input Rohan and have a great new week ahead!

  • Hi Lisa,

How timely. I just signed up for Tweepi to follow a bunch of folks back, who’ve followed me, and to use different tools to follow influencers. I see more growth for twitter because of mobile adoption rates, as you noted, and because it’s the instant gratification platform.

People can tweet what they want in seconds and can scan a stream or list for a wealth of information in seconds. That alone makes twitter popular in this microwave age, where folks want everything yesterday.

Factor in the ease of tweeting through smart phones and tablets and you have the recipe for massive, quick growth.

I’m engaging more, staying on topic and most of all, I’m using tools to set up a nice, calm steady flow to my stream. Seeing updates every 30 or 60 minutes, during business hours, with steady engagement, has helped the quality of my followers, and of my blog traffic, improve.

    The smart approach works best.

I tweet mainly through my laptop but check in through my tablet every few days to engage, and to send out my travel photos more quickly. So much potential on twitter for bloggers, or any online entrepreneur.

Thanks so much Lisa. I’m tweeting through Triberr.

    Have a great weekend.

    • Hi Ryan, I have used Tweepi on and off and read more about it this a.m. via the Triberr stream. Interesting indeed. Good point on instant gratification. I love the fast pace of it Ryan and the 140 or less characters. I’m not one for a lot of words. I believe engagement is the major key. I use both desktop and mobile and try to respond to tweets as soon as I can but within 12 hours. I can’t imagine blogging without Twitter and the help of Triberr too. You too Ryan – enjoy the weekend ahead and the new month beginning.

  • Hey Lisa,

When you said you were going to finish that eBook you meant it girl. Congratulations to you for getting it finished so quickly and I know it’s going to be good. I hope to get a chance to read it this weekend since I hope to take some time to myself. I’m eager to learn from you cause you’re really good on Twitter.

I’m not surprised with that increase because I have some shows that I watch on TV and they require you voting through your phone. People are tweeting about the show while it’s on although as you can imagine, I’m not. Well I record everything and watch it when I have time so I’m never on at the time it’s airing.

I figured the World Cup had a lot to do with that too so let’s hope this stays steady or keep rising. I love Twitter myself and would love to see it do really well.

Thank you for sharing this and I’m eager to read your eBook. Thanks again and enjoy your weekend.

    • Hi Adrienne, I sure did 🙂 I had planned on finishing by end of 2013 and then mom got sick so I had to put it on the backburner. It was good timing though as many of the changes took place in Q1 of 2014 so it gave the eBook much more to write about. I’m already thinking of my next one and hint: It won’t be on Twitter…I was sos happy about the increase because many were thinking it was doomed. I just hope they don’t make many more changes. Let Facebook be Facebook and Twitter be Twitter! I’ve done the Tweeting from a live play (Tweet Seats) and it was fun! You are welcome. I have to say Happy Birthday Adrienne as it’s August 1st 🙂 Enjoy the day to the fullest!

  • I have always been a bigger fan of Twitter over Facebook. I engage because of my blog but I hardly engage on a personal level. I access through Hootsuite, my mobile phone but I mostly sign on directly from the site.

Congratulations on the second eBook! I am definitely going to have to get my copy!

Thanks for the Twitter news Lisa! I hope you’re having a great day!

I think Twitter will continue to grow because you can get news at your finger tips in Real Time, especially like CNN Breaking News and many more. I am always signed into Twitter via Twitter mobile app and Hootsuite; as well as on the web. Twitter is my go to hub when I need to detox from a stressful day as well. There is bound to be something on there to put a smile on my face! Can wait to read your book!
