Is Your Blog Summer-Proof & Why Does Web Traffic Tend to Drop?

Is Your Blog Summer-Proof Yet?

Have you noticed your blog getting any less traffic in the summertime? The lazy days of summer will soon be upon us. Is your blog summer-proof? Several website owners answered the question on Quora about summertime web traffic.  Most agreed their web traffic did decline during the summer months. Most noticed the traffic drop beginning in the month of May. Holidays like Memorial Day and July 4th are another time when web traffic may take a nosedive.

Blog summer-proofWhat is it about the summer months that makes us lazier? Summer weather may reduce both our attention and our energy levels. According to the psychologists quoted in the New Yorker, our brains really do wilt in the summertime. It is a time of reduced productivity. When the sun is shining and the skies are blue people tend to think of leisure activities. They find it harder to concentrate on mundane tasks. Even any thought provoking activities take a dive. Studies from Harvard University and in Japan found similar patterns. On bad weather days people tended to work an extra half hour per day than on good weather days.

On the good weather days people were thinking about what they wanted to be doing instead of concentrating on work. Some call it Spring Fever. But it really happens more during the summertime months.

4 Ways To Make Your Blog Summer-Proof

  1. Pre-Write – Have your blog posts ready in advance for the days when you are ready to shut down the computer. You may want to head to the beach or park.
  2. Plan Time to Promote – Save a little time each day to promote your posts and others. Remember the 80/20 rule. Only share 20% of your own stuff, the other 80% should be others.
  3. Give Yourself a Break – Don’t let yourself burn out this summer. Give yourself a little vacation and time away from online activities. You will feel refreshed and better able to get back into the groove.
  4. Mobile Ready – Be sure your website is mobile friendly! This is an important blog summer-proof tip. More people will be using their mobile phones to access your website or blog this summer – more than ever before!

Does Mobile Make A Difference To Making Your Blog Summer-Proof?

Mobile devices have made some difference in web traffic. More and more people are relying on their mobile devices as they move about. “What we’re seeing is continued growth in mobile traffic,” said Jeremy Lockhorn, vice president of emerging media at Razorfish in New York. According to Pew Research 91% of all adults now own a cell phone. (June, 2013) Did you know that the cell phone is the most quickly adopted consumer technology ever in the world? What an amazing stat!

We all need to make our blogs mobile responsive. I found out the hard way that what I think of as “mobile responsive” is NOT what others claim it is! After I switched to Genesis and chose a child theme specifically because it was “mobile responsive” I found out it really isn’t.

My header does not resize. I had to add code to get images in posts to resize. And I had to install a plugin to get videos to resize. Don’t switch to the Prose child theme as apparently it is not as advanced as some of the newer themes. I need to switch again! I wrote about all this with screen captures, but that post has already fallen off the end of CommentLuv. I can share the link if you want it.

  • Hi Lisa,

I am late to read this post and have to put this into action the next year. That’s because we are already in the summertime now and I was not prepared for it this time. I did not have any pre-written posts and it’s almost 42 to 44 degree Celsius here now, so you can understand the amount of heatwave we are going by, added to that is the high humidity, which is making situations worse.

It’s just getting impossible to sit in front of computer or laptop and work for even an hour. The rains are gonna come by July, so we have to wait until then. So, my blogging has slowed down tremendously and now the frequency of writing and publishing also has decreased and communicating to all of you my friends too. So, I will keep this in mind for the next time and be summertime ready the next year. :)

If I only could only take my own advice, my mom past away last week and I wished I had a few posts that were pre-done. So it’s a good idea for anytime really. I hope the weather gets better there soon Mainak. I’m not a fan of high humidity, I turned on my air conditioner for the first time today….

Concerning the topic I hope to do a lot of catching up as have been out of the blogging scene for a couple of week so far. So coming to your blog has helped me know that i need to craft a couple of content that ll give me the opportunity to take the needed rest while also giving me the opportunity to do lots of promotion.

    Thanks once again

Handy gadgets are the best solution to retain your traffic in summer. So you need to follow all requirements to be equally visible on all types of display frames including LCD, LED, laptop, smartphone and Iphone.
You well covered all the points to equally get huge traffic in summer when people get slow and try to manage their life normal by going out more and staying home less.
Thanks for writing on such a wonderful idea that rarely comes into mind of most of the people. Thanks a lot

  • Hey Lisa,

These are great tips. I was a big advocate to your first tip. Last year and the year before last I would prewrite my content and set them to be publish later on. I actually got addicted to it and happen to end up with 3 months of material LOL.. this was when I was writing shorter content and every other day. I was really on something then! Also, yes, I admit it, I take my mobile phone to the bathroom. It’s as almost as if I can’t live without it… I think this is a bad habit LOL… thanks for sharing the tips and the stats!

Hi Sherman, wow 3 months of it! I wish I could do that Sherman. I’m lucky to get one or two weeks ahead. I take my mobile there and almost everywhere Sherman. I’ve gotten better though past few months and am online a bit less, between my mom sick and trying to “live” a little more outside the internet. Thanks for your input Sherman and have a wonderful day ahead.

    Hello Lisa,

Thanks for that infographic…it was quite revealing! Over here in Nigeria however, it’s always hot…and the Summer months in the US coincide with the raining season here – and the weather is slightly tolerable during this time.

I recently changed all my blog designs/themes to responsive ones…it’s quite headstrong going with a non responsive design (or theme) when the handwriting is clearly on the wall…

Do have a very great day, Lisa!

    Always,

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for sharing this informative post.
I agree with your point of not getting much traffic in summer days as people go to spend their holidays in summer time.
In summer days we become lazy which can affect our blog. We should be ready for these days.
We need to make a plan, schedule of posting at our blog. Laziness shouldn’t lead upon us.

It’s all about hard determination to get success.
Hope you are enjoying the weekend. :)

    Hey Lisa,

I’ve noticed that traffic does seem to slack off more in the summer months then others. Most kids are out of school and the parents are spending more time with them and vacationing more. I actually love that the families are spending more time together or in other cases just taking some much needed time off.

It’s not always great for us but I certainly can’t fault them for wanting to take some time away. Man, I need to do that myself but I don’t really see that happening for me this summer.

As for mobile users well you know I’m still not a big mobile user myself and I don’t have a lot of mobile users accessing my blog at this time but that doesn’t mean that’s not where it’s headed. I can’t keep my head in the sand just because I don’t personally use it a lot.

Thanks for the reminder because summer is almost here now. Oh and I loved the infographic, great job Lisa.

    Enjoy your week.

Hi Adrienne, yes more people do take time away during the summer months. I know I’ll be offline more this summer between my mom and time away from my day job. I’ve been offline more this year than in the past 4. I still want to try to do a garden too but not sure I will accomplish that and my new eBook. I hope you do get to take a little time Adrienne to recharge too! Oh yes, mobile is so prelevant now, everywhere you go you see people on their mobile. (Even on the beach…) Thanks for your input and enjoy the rest of your week there Adrienne.

    Hey Lisa
I often find that there are large periods of slow time (summer and xmas) and it is actually a good time to take a break yourself. This could be less writing and bigger time off, or time to do something else.
I personally tend to take my vacation in the off-season so I work through the summer.
Getting ahead and writing for your down-time is a great plan and something I do for all my vacation.
But a little time off full-stop, is also not bad.
    Thanks for the reminder :>

Hi Ashley, yes Christmas is another slow time as well. I looked at my garden space yesterday and wondered if I would have time for that this summer, I haven’t had one since I started blogging but I’m trying to achieve more balance this year. I have to work on that writing ahead as well. I know how important it will become otherwise the blog will get stale. You are welcome for the reminder and have a great new week there Ashley.

    Hey Lisa,

it’s been a long time i visited your blog, your articles are still best. i never thought that i would have to make my blog summer-proof, nice tips though. i liked 2nd and 3rd because many bloggers doesn’t have time to promote their content, they believe in writing which doesn’t worth their time. They need to divide time among writing and promoting, moreover they should save some time for resting because continuous writing and promoting may make them exhausted.

  • This is a great reminder Lisa!

I’ll have to go back and see how my traffic was this past summer, I can’t think that far back LOL.

The one thing I made sure my new theme was mobile friendly. The challenge I have is pre-writing post…I make time for it, but it never happens LOL. I might do like Bren and take advantage of the downtime and write during that time. It’s all how you look at it I guess :).

I tend to work more in bad weather too and on pretty days, I’ll drift off and start day dreaming while I’m looking outside. :).

Thanks for sharing the infographic Lisa. Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to you and your mom!

    Hello Lisa,

I must admit this was indeed an interesting read. The way you used info-graphics in this post, made it very reader-friendly post.
Also agree with the point 4. Having a mobile responsive site is very important because most of the users now browse Internet through their phones.

Love it Lisa! I think people tend to be outside more and with friends and family and too busy for blogging writing and reading. I’m going to look the decline in blog traffic as a blessing for me this summer, as I plan on hammering out some short stories and promoting them.

What are your plans? Are you prewriting or will you continue to do your norm?

I stayed out late cutting grass last night to leave more time for this weekend (I hope!). Good luck on those short stories Bren and have a great weekend.

    Hi Lisa,

I really wonder what it is too, though I think it’s the heat of the summer just as we have at our end, it’s at the peak right now and by July we start getting a little rain so it cools off, or then it’s the humid weather those day.

More than us keeping our posts ready, it’s not many people visiting our blogs I think, though again largely it depends on the kind of post also, and of course your audience. If they are the ones with families, surely going on vacation is on everyone’s agenda, so they would be less traffic, other than that, people do keep coming.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend :)

    Hey Lisa,

Greta tips. Love #3 most. We all need time for break and that’s vital. Of course, work and money making would take up a lot of my time but make sure we have a little balance to enjoy life as well.

Take a break, go out with your love ones and you will come back even happier and pumped!

Worked for me all the time.

Oh yes, shared on Inbound too!
