Social Bookmarking Sites – Are You Wasting Time There?

Social Bookmarking Sites – A Thing of the Past?

Do you still spend a fair amount of time using social bookmarking sites to get traffic to your blog or website today? I read a post yesterday by Kazeem James. He claims that social bookmarking is dead. I’m hoping so. We spend so much time promoting our posts and not enough time writing more posts or commenting at other blogs. If you are not sure what it is exactly – here is Wikipedia’s explanation of it:

Social Bookmarking Service is a centralized online service which enables users to add, annotate, edit, and share bookmarks of web documents.”

Social Bookmark Sites Have Been Around social bookmarking sites

These social bookmarking sites have been around since 1996. That’s 18 years! Not much has lasted that long on the internet. They are also known as “Tagging” a term Delicious coined back in 2003.  Many of these type of websites have added a rating feature so people can rate others bookmarks. These bookmarks were indexed by web spiders and thought to be of a great SEO benefit. They were for some time. That is until the spammers took over and Google made changes to adjust to them.

I first noticed a difference with StumbleUpon. I will go out on a limb here, I believe that StumbleUpon is no longer worth it. I know, many still use it and claim it drives traffic. But I’ve found it drives up your bounce rate incredibly. Is that really worth it? Another one I dropped over a year now is Digg. Are you still using either of these 2 sites?

Is Social Network SEO Different?

I believe it is. See the word NETWORK? It’s all about the networking socially. If you want to be on social, you must BE social. Not just bookmarking and moving on. When you form a network it will draw traffic and backlinks to you naturally. Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, YouTube, Vine, Tumblr and Pinterest are the places to be on today. I also agree with Kazeem on BizSugar, it’s a great place to network and make new contacts!

How To Better Spend Our Time For Our Blogs

I believe our time can be better spent than doing the same thing over and over again. That’s called insanity, right? Spending time on these social bookmarking sites seems almost pointless today. Here are other productive things you can do instead that will bring you more traffic and more SEO juice:

  • Generate More Content – Either writing more blog posts, making a slideshare or doing a video, etc.
  • Conversing with Others – Either by commenting on blogs or in the socialsphere as my good friend Corina from Work From Home Concepts calls it.
  • Writing an eBook – Writing your first, second or third eBook.
  • Writing for Others – Doing guest posts or getting paid to write. Does that sound more worthwhile to you?
  • Learn New Things – Whether it’s to clean up your blog or add some new plugins, you have to learn more. (I tried to install a new pop-up the other day and got a fatal error message, back to the drawing board I go.)

I’d love to know if you are still using those social bookmarking sites and how often.

Do you think they still have any value today in 2014?

  • Hey Lisa,
Nice post and I learned lots of new stuff after reading this post. Social media sites play important role in blogging as it help in promoting our blog and also attracts reader but spending lots of time in social media sites work in opposite way. If we spend lots of time, then we may loose our concentration towards blog. I really like the point of writing for others. Thanks for sharing this post.

  • I certainly don’t see some as a waste of time, but I avoid sites like Digg and Youtube as I could waste too much time there.

  • Though it seems pointless, I am adding comments after so many comments but I will still do so.

Social bookmarking isn’t dead, at least in my head but I really liked the idea of doing a slide-share presentation or a YouTube video, I have been thinking of doing any of the two since a long time now but now I will do it.

Thanks for this post. Makes a lot of sense. 🙂

  • This is true. I spend so much time trying to put links to my posts on all these different bookmarking sites and I could be working on the long list of posts on my to write list that never get done!

I haven’t been stumbling lately because the traffic coming from them have not been that high. I will focus my efforts in other places! Thanks Lisa!

  • Hey Lisa,

What a wonderful conversation you’ve started here presenting both the pros and cons.

For me I think it all comes down to time.

If I know how to use the bookmarking site effectively and DO see the benefits in traffic, I may use it. However if I’m fumbling around the site and not seeing the benefits of the time it takes to submit my articles there, I’d stay away.

BizSugar is great so I’m happy to see it was included in this article.

Finally, excellent point of considering the bounce rate of the traffic from these Bookmarking sites! I’ll be looking into that now!

    • Hi Jacob, welcome to Inspire to Thrive. Oh yes, time is of the essence after all. StumbleUpon is a fumble around type of site at first but when I discovered the high bounce rate from it I stopped using it regularly. I may use it via Viral Buzz Content but not often. Biz Sugar is great and I do try to visit there a few times per week Jacob. Thanks for coming by and have a great rest of your week.

  • I had a poor experience with BizSugar, and I’m not sure it, or sites like it, really encourage the “social” in social media. I’m not sure I believe social bookmarking is dead, but what I’m envisioning is more of a resurgence in curated lists – maybe a Wikipedia for blogs, where the curators are picky and can’t be bought, and their decisions to include a site or not are subject to peer review and debate. I’m pretty sure that search engines will be the death of the Internet, actually, as the results become more and more what marketers intend and less and less what searchers are looking for.

  • Hi there Lisa!

Yeah I’m not big on those social bookmarking sites either. I believe being Social is key.

I’ve stopped using StumbleUpon some months ago too. It wasn’t doing anything for my traffic.

I actually have thought about joining Biz Sugar. I’m going to have to take a closer look at it this week. 🙂

Another site I had joined but isn’t doing much for me is Networked Blogs. Since it’s all about working smarter and not harder, I might have to let them go too.

I agree with all these suggestions you shared. I just finished my first eBook but now in the editing/publishing phase. I hope to have it out by March. And thanks for the mention by the way…I love the socialverse 🙂

I’m all about trying new things this year too. I’m going to tackle HTML if it’s the last thing I do!

Great post Lisa! Have a great new week!

  • Pinterest is totally worth it. I guess technically it isn’t social bookmarking, but that is how I use it. A lot of our Facebook fans have told me how awesome they think it is that we are on there. It gives people a second chance to find stuff they might have missed that had already been shared on Facebook or Twitter.

  • I hear this alot today. I do agree it takes up so much time. Bookmarking also helps many who are just starting out to get their name out there and noticed. However, I strongly agree with you that certain bookmarking sites are harmful like Stumbleupon where it harms your bounce rates. I think the key to this is what Harleena said and where ever you build a network, you are going to help yourself. Connecting and engaging is HUGE!

Blog commenting and sites like Twitter and Google+ are great for that. What is even nicer is you form friendships along the way (a great side benefit). Thank you for coming by Irish and have a great new week!
Lisa recently posted…Social Bookmarking Sites – Are You Wasting Time There? My Profile

  • Hi Lisa,

I have to agree with you. I haven’t seen a lot of good results from bookmarking sites in awhile now. StumbleUpon was the only one I still used up until last year. That traffic doesn’t hang around though but I’ve found it hasn’t hurt my bounce rate because I don’t get a ton of traffic from that site. I’m to the point where I’ve decided this year I’m going to say goodbye to that one as well. I mean if they’re not going to stick around then why waste my time right.

As far as blogging networks, I haven’t had much success with them either so I quit using them some time back. I believe it was also around the first of last year that Google announced that they had deranked all of those. I know that more come on the scene but I find a lot of them link groups or communities on the social networks. All they do is spam the sites and nothing else.

I know a lot of people promote BizSugar but I never joined because of this very reason. I can only speak from my own personal experience and I believe you know me rather well now. I’m not a spammer, I’m a relationship gal myself but when you get nothing in return then it’s time to cut your losses and move on.

Thanks for sharing this post though and it’s obvious that you’re not alone in your thinking.

    Hope you’re enjoying your weekend.

I like finding new content using those two sites as well. Some of them are the same but many are new along the way as with Triberr. I’d pick Triberr over them if I had to choose. Now i generally prefer on sharing my posts on Bizsugar and on Scoop.it. Nothing else!
We should stay away from social bookmarking sites, as it doesn’t help much and also the traffic we get from such sites only help in increasing the bounce rate of our blog.

    • Hi Josh, interesting take – thanks for sharing that with us. Have you checked the bounce rate? It would be interesting to know. I remember mine was 90% plus via it. Interesting – you had me look and my List.ly (newest love of mine) had a high bounce rate and it’s slowly coming down. • I was planning to use social bookmarking sites (Blogengage and Bizsugar) to promote the new blog. I don’t think I will get to do it….I just got back to college on Monday, and it has been much harder to maintain just the commenting.

I also subscribed to a lot more blogs last week – since I launched the blog, I wanted to comment more to get more exposure 😀 I suppose it will improve, once I dedicate time to perform certain tasks. I would know that by the end of next week (the thing is I could have more time…if I abandon some of my habits, such as code learning, new language learning and so forth – habits I picked up last year. But, I really don’t want to do it. I want to keep learning those things :D)/

Guest posting is also something I could do – haven’t done it in a while.

Anyways, thank you for the post, Lisa 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  • I agree that social bookmarking is dead.

I used social bookmarking sites quite a bit back in 2009 for my other websites, but really didn’t see good results from it. Actually I remember a woman in the UK building an online product that you could use to push your blog posts out to a huge number of social bookmarking sites (many I had never heard of) all at once.

In 2013 I added a few of my blog posts to Reddit and that seemed to work well.

I also receive very nice traffic from Twitter and Pinterest. Facebook was okay but since all their changes happened, it now almost feels like a waste of time. It seems to work better for friends and family that just want to share what they are up to and keep in touch.

    • Hi Sicorra, oh yes, that’s when I had started too in 2009. I just signed up for Reddit to learn more about it. (It does not seem easy to use) Interesting, thanks for sharing. Oh yes, those big social networks are great, as you know I really love Twitter and Pinterest. Facebook is really just that for family and friends unless you have a big budget to spend. Thanks for coming by and sharing your opinion on this one Sicorra, Have a wonderful weekend!
Lisa recently posted…Social Bookmarking Sites – Are You Wasting Time There? My Profile

  • Hi Lisa,

I was never one to use social bookmarking nor SEO. Guess I like to do just about everything organically. I’m on the social sites and do share posts I read on them. When there is a new person that comes to my blog, I make sure I connect with them on all the social sites, say Hi and tell them why I’m there….to syndicate their blogs.

It’s like putting out my hand first for a hand shake!

I also like quality more than quantity. I rather have people come on over to me instead of me trying to shout out all over the place lol.

It was always too crazy for me to be on stumble upon, and those others. I just couldn’t keep up and noticed there was more reciprocity on Facebook groups, Google+ groups, etc.

    That’s my two cents!

  • I haven’t used social bookmarking sites and it’s honestly a relief to hear that’s one thing I can cross off my list! 🙂 I did just join Pinterest. I’m personally enjoying it and it definitely has brought me some new visitors. I need to be more proactive as I think it can be a great source of referrals for me. I have never heard of BizSugar but will have to take a look at it and see if it’s a good fit for me. I have a personal facebook account, but with all their changes, I don’t plan to create one for Eat Laugh Purr. It doesn’t seem to be a great use of my limited time. 🙂

Biz Sugar is great to meet new people and read some really good content. I don’t blame you for the Facebook page, I don’t worry about mine anymore and really use it for experiments to help others with there’s to see what may work or not. If I were starting over again I’d probably not start one unless I had a good budget to promote it on the Facebook network. It sounds like you are using your time wisely Tanya. Thanks for coming by and have yourself a wonderful weekend.

Susan Neal recently posted…How Writing Will Help You Keep That New Year ResolutionMy Profile

  • Lisa I just do mainly Twitter and Pinterest. I do spend some time on facebook keeping up with friends and fellow bloggers, but I don’t count on it being a way to drive traffic. With facebook showing your posts to only about 10% of your followers, it’s hard to believe that it’s worth our time. I still put some things there, but I don’t consider it very valuable for traffic.

I used to get a lot of traffic from Pinterest, but in the last 3 or 4 months that has dropped to a trickle. I have no idea why except that Pinterest gobbles up new ideas faster than I can put them out there. Also it seems to be driven by more DIY posts. I have some of those and they have been popular there, but that is not the main purpose of my blog. So I get a few from Pinterest.

I don’t get that much from Twitter either and I don’t know why. I interact with people there all the time, but still get only a few visits via Twitter.

I don’t do the other social networking except for blog commenting. That is the most rewarding to me personally because I get to express my ideas and share conversations. I don’t get that much traffic from that, but I still enjoy doing it.

I am too shy for YouTube and other videos. Twitter, Pinterest, facebook, and commenting keep me pretty busy. I don’t know that I have time to keep adding others? What do you suggest?

I had to post tonight about my mom’s cancer diagnosis – easier than calling cousins and other friends…I did it with a quote to stay positive. So it does keep us all connected in that manner well. But for business – blah. Twitter is best and Google+ too now. Pinterest was great for retail site I had and is doing better for here now. You have to pin and like other pins daily. I spend about 5 min per day sometimes 2x daily and share via Twitter and FB on some pins. Twitter, I should send you the eBook I did. I LOVE it and get lots of traffic from it. On the retail site I used to get lots of sales too. Blog comments are great to get to know others, network and make friends. An real added bonus! I hope to do more with YouTube this year. I would suggest Biz Sugar and Google+. I will email you the code for the eBook on Twitter too. Have a great weekend Maggie.

Those networks serve me very well now and account for the large majority of my referral traffic so I feel my decision was the right one.

  • Well I think yes I’m wasting time in social bookmarking sites seems like I’ve found it just wasting recently. But I also think the top sites of social bookmarking will surely get awesome results.

I am inspired by the comment contribution of Vijesh on my blog about the fate of Google+ in the nearest future; my take on it is that Google+ is here to stay till eternity as the goal of Google is to dominate the social sphere.

where are the likes of Digg, Jumptags, Mister-wong, StumbleUpon of those days? they are somehow gone and forgotten.

I think its high time we change our approach to start embracing the new concept of SEO in relation to social relevance.

I think you are right about Google+ too. I’ve been spending more time on that one myself. I like that term “Social relevance”. It almost seems senseless if we think about how the bookmarking works. It does not have really have a value per say as a blog or comments. I guess they have outgrown their existence in that respect. Thanks again James and have a great weekend ahead!

  • Hi Lisa,

Social bookmarking sites are supposed to be good, and StumbleUpon and Digg are said to be great traffic pullers too, provided you know how to use them or have your own group of like minded people sharing each others posts there. It isn’t all that good if you don’t have others sharing your posts, nothing as compared to FB, Twitter and the ones you mentioned of course. One of our blogging friend’s Babanature uses a lot many of bookmarking sites, amazes me how he manages to be on so many of them. I still need to register myself to many of them as compared.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week 🙂

The bigs ones are best and to be used for networking more and less on promoting on our own stuff. The good old 80/20 rule is what I truly believe works best for most things including promoting of our sites on social networks and bookmarking. It will be interesting to see how others will respond to this as well. Thanks for your input Harleena and have a great weekend ahead there.

  • Is social media dead, that just like asking if social bookmarking is dead?

Lisa, I get the whole gist about SEO spammers making use of this system. But I think this sites have gotten wise and manually screen the links bizsugar for example.

I still find it useful, because some have high PR and its a way for your post to get authority link and it doesn’t cost you time.

Perhaps as you said stumble upon may lead to high bounce rate but sites like reditt is so awesome that if your post land on the first page be sure to be in for a bumper harvest.

So in summary its important you select what working and for bizsugar is working cause together with google plus they took to the first page of google for the *benefit of blogging*

Thanks for sharing, Lisa and for stimulating this conversation will be back to see what others take on this topic.

    • Hi Peter, Biz Sugar is one to be on Peter. It’s different than those other bookmarking sites like Stumble Upon, Delicious, etc. It will be interesting to see what others will have to say on this topic too Peter. I think I’ve been reading more and more website owners and bloggers doing less bookmarking and creating more content. Let’s see what the other readers will have to say too. Thanks for coming by and for sharing your input on this one.

I think my recent success of Pinterest shows that social media is well worth the effort and generates better longer term traffic.
Whether this will remain so forever, I am sure it won’t Things are constantly changing. That is the burden of our times.
    But go with the flow.

    • Hi Ashley, Yes you got it! Social media – it is different than bookmarking sites and being social is key. You are also right that things change all the time especially online. Never put all the social eggs or SEO eggs in one basket. I think I’ve learned that for sure in the few years I’ve been online. Go with the flow is great advice online and offline Ashley, thanks for your input and have a great rest of the week.

  • Good post with useful suggestions Lisa 🙂

Yeah, am using social bookmarking site, but not many! Just few bookmarking sites to make network and to connect with like-minded people as Kazeem told. Thanks for your suggestions related to writing 🙂

  • Years ago I used to use Delicious. It was a good way to keep track of links on various topics. Then it got bought out, once, twice … the login pages kept changing. Now it is no longer worthwhile to figure out what happened to all those links.

I sort of use Pinterest as a way to keep track of visuals. That works for now. If someone bought the company and messed with it, I’d lose interest.

I don’t do pinning directly for SEO, but that is an added plus. I was hoping there was a new, easier to keep track of (whatever it is). It’s frustrating when a method works for a while then ends.

  • I personally see it as waste of time now.

I don’t see any worth in them and I used to try to pull in traffic from Stumbleupon back in the day.

Maybe some are having success with Stumbleupon? Good for them!

For my type of content, Stumbleupon or any other social bookmarking site is not worth my time.

I would rather invest time in quality content creation and promotion.

The best place I only use for some sort of bookmarking is Bizsugar.
