5 Things I Learned This Week That Will Help You Online

The 5 Things I Learned

If you are a regular reader you know how much I love learning new things online about social media, blogging or SEO. It always amazes me how much things change even from day-to-day. How do you keep up to grow your online business or blog when things appear like a puzzle on some days? Here are 5 things I learned this week plus 2 bonuses that may help you on your journey. 5 things I learned

1. Strip The Blog Tool

Do you want to know what’s working on other people’s blogs? How many shares their posts have received  in the last week or two? Type of posts that are hot on the social networks? This tool will help you find out quickly what is working for other bloggers. It can also show you their posts for past 2 weeks and help you to come up with different posts and not be like all the others. This was a great one of the 5 things I learned this past week.

2. Do Splash – A New Blogging Community

I did it, I signed up for a new site and was pleasantly surprised to learn it was found and owned by Jane Sheeba. Jane launched Do Splash back in August. How did I miss that? Did you know about it or miss it too?  It reminds me a little of Blog Engage or Biz Sugar. It is simple to sign up and use. You can connect with your friends easily there. There are some familiar faces there but not many. Jane acknowledges it is similar to others out there but says she will do her best to make it different and interesting. Congratulations to Jane!

3. Don’t Forget LinkedIn

Are you using LinkedIn? Do you log in often? Do you participate in groups? It’s a great place to post early mornings before 8 a.m. (That’s one of the 5 things I learned this past week) You can do this of course via the Buffer too. You may not want to post the same things you do on Twitter, Google or FB but keep it more “business” minded. I know many bloggers use it but many don’t and have forgotten how powerful a network Linkedin is.

4. Tweeting Is A Living for Hollywood Social Media Managers

Did you know they can make up to $6,000 per week? Now, that is my DREAM job. Imagine tweeting for a  living? No other network but Twitter would you have to concentrate on. I’ve gotten paid via Sponsored Tweets but nothing like these folks are getting for Hollywood stars. Which Hollywood star would you want to tweet for? Some celebrities who tweet for a brand get $10,000 per tweet. Now that is the big bucks!

5. Matt Cutts Asked Us For Our Wishlist

Wishlist for Matt Cutts

The last of the 5 things I learned was that Matt Cutts has asked us what we would want to see new in 2014 for Google Webmaster Tools.  He doesn’t promise to fulfill all our wishes but he is asking. He will be off the rest of November  so you still have time to add to the 300+ comments there already with your ideas. I love his idea about tell the pages on your website that lead to 404s or broken links, so that site owners can fix their own broken links – Now that would top my wish list, how about yours?

So there are my 5 things I learned this week online – I hope you found at least one of them helpful to you. We could never stay on top of all the new things happening on social media, blogging or SEO. We have to rely on each other for information as we all learn different things at different times.

I have 2 bonuses for you too.

Pinterest Bonus

Learn what is new over at Pinterest in my BloggerDoc guest post from yesterday. Not only will you learn about the new neat Place Pins but a few other updates on Pinterest, one of my favorite social network sites.

Spam Control

The last of the 5 things I learned this week plus 2 bonuses is about Spam. Spam here has been getting out of control. I started to research with my CommentLuv premium and I learned many other bloggers were using Askimet along with it. I installed and it the problem is now solved. This blog went from 30 spam comments to 0 in 12 hours. Do you use both comment plugins on your blog?

Were any of these 5 things I learned new to you?

Let me know what you’d like to learn more about in the coming weeks in your comments.

    Hi Lisa,

Now, this is a resourceful post 🙂 You are gonna come up with similar posts consistently too?

Indeed! – Blogging, Social Media and SEO are very dynamic topics to keep up with 🙂 But, as long as we fond of ’em, it wouldn’t be a problem after all. Isn’t it?

It’s interesting how Strip The Blog Tool can show us popular posts of the blogs. Of course, as you implied it can be very useful to find what kind of topics that works best. However, still bloggers can manipulate share counts. You know, sharing by themselves and automating ’em. I think we need to count on possibilities too, nah?

Mmm… LinkedIn. Yet, I couldn’t focus much on this network but it does generate traffic though, Lisa 🙂 I’d probably take it to the end of this year or start with 2014. Good reminder for me.

Love the idea about spotting broken links via GWMT! Further, I’d love to see detailed (and live) performance and security reports for web pages. I always thought that Google Analytics and GWMT can be linked more deeply too. Anyway, wouldn’t you love to have a GWMT app for smartphones Lisa? It would be awesome 😉 What do you think?

Akismet is one of my favorites I use along with Disqus too, and it does what it says. No room for spammy comments but have to keep eyes on spotting good ones as spam though. Interesting how it blends with CommentLuv. That would be a great tip for all CommentLuv users 🙂

You have a lovely weekend over there dear!

I do check spam because every once in a while a good one lands there but better than have tons of spam ones showing til I delete them, right? I’ve been under the weather this weekend and hoping I feel better soon. I hope things are going well there for you my friend. Have a great new week and month.

As you said it’s a new community so many bloggers are not yet familiar with it but I know that Jane would add other features.

I was also able to come across an article that mentioned Matt Cutt post about giving google suggestion that will help improve Google webmaster tool. And I think that feedback mechanism is really awesome.

    Hi Lisa,

    What change?

Things change every day? Is it really so? Even if it is so, there are different types of changes: a) positive ; b) neutral; c) negative.

There is also a more important type of change that we should be aware of.

    What matters?

This example with Do Splash is interesting. You said: Jane acknowledges “it is similar to others out there”. Well, this is the kind of change that, I’m afraid, dominates the online world. Let’s call it “apparent change”. A change that it s not quite a change… . It just look like a change until the owner does his (her) “best to make it different and interesting”. Then it becomes a real change.

    Conclusion

We must not be discouraged by the huge amount of change and the fast pace. Real change, this is what we must pay attention to. We must develop a kind of sixth sense that helps us identify the real changes that appear. When we find such a change we must take advantage … right away.

    Have a wonderful day

    Hey Lisa,

Well hot dog… I knew about all of these but the first one. Have never heard of that site but will definitely check it out, another cool one so thank you.

Jane updated us all when she first created her community but I’m not big on those types myself so I bowed out from joining.

LinkedIn isn’t a site that I have much luck with. You’re right, it’s much more business related and even the groups I’m a part of don’t really benefit me at all. Most of the blogs that are a part of those groups I have absolutely no interest in whatsoever and it’s obvious that they aren’t familar with commenting or sharing. Probably why they aren’t doing very well.

I read about social media managers for the hollywood a-listers. Yeah, we can only dream of ever having a cushy job like that and although I would love that kind of money for having fun like that I don’t think I’d want to hang around with the stars. I know, I’m so past all of that at my age now.

So let’s just see if Matt takes anyone’s suggestions, that ought to be interesting don’t you think?

I also have read Carolyn’s post recently about the Pinterest places but I’m not a big Pinterest person myself but I know so many people are.

I had heard about having both Akismet and CLP on your blog so I tested it out and it didn’t help me at all. I was getting more spam but blacklisting them through the AB addition seems to have really helped. Glad you’re having luck with that though.

Glad you learned some new things, isn’t that a blast! I love that so thanks for sharing these with us.

Have a great week Lisa and a fabulous Thanksgiving with your family. Have fun.

P.S. If you’ve checked my reply to your comment from earlier today, you will find a gift waiting for you.

    All the best!

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for sharing what you learned. I always feel as a blogger, that the best part of it all is things that I learn. I just love it!

Strip the Blog Tool really got my interest Lisa, I went over to check it out and to me, it’s a gold mine. Signing up right after my syndication!

As for LinkedIn, I used to call it my “secret weapon” years back. I fell off of it for a while, but came back to it this year and I actually have so many people contacting me asking what I do, etc. Plus a few good business opportunities. I just love it and you are correct when you say that you have to write things there with your business mindset cap on!

CommentLuv Premium is my lifesaver and I don’t know how I would ever blog without it!

However, I do need to pay more attention to my broken links….thanks for the reminder!

You are welcome Donna. Me too, always an adventure learning new things. That tool sure is a goldmine and glad I came across it from a blog via Biz Sugar (another great place). I love CommentLuv premium and would not switch from it. Oh yes, those nasty broken links – I use a plugin for that now. It does help make it easier. Have a great day Donna and a wonderful Thanksgiving coming up.

    Hi Lisa;
These were all new to me, except the last one. Thanks for sharing all this great info! Just a note about Akismet: I got rid of it, because it was putting many legitimate comments in spam and, even worse, in trash! Just make sure to check those folders regularly, in case.
    Cheers!

  • Hi, Lisa! 🙂 I’m leaning toward reactivating Akismet, because spam is the bane of my online existence. 🙂 I also *love* the new Pinterest places pins – such a cool thing to do. I need to set up a board and get pinning [more]. 😉

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for these great shares – the Strip the Blog tool looks interesting, I hadn’t heard of that. I don’t use LinkedIn very much at all, due to time constraints and the same applies to DoSplash – I’ve joined it but haven’t managed to spend much time there. I’m just starting to use Triberr more regularly – that’s my main objective at the moment. I might make getting more active on LinkedIn one of my New Year Resolutions for 2014!

I wouldn’t want to tweet for anyone else, no matter how famous. And I think Matt’s idea for notifying owners of broken links is brilliant – I’d vote for that.

I’ve always used Akismet with CommentLuv – I remember checking it out with Andy when I first installed ComLuv and he confirmed they were compatible. I don’t have too much trouble with spam – a few, but it’s manageable.

    Cheers, Lisa 🙂

    Hi Lisa,

Loved #5. If we could identify the broken links the easier way I’m all for it. Also I’ve been exploring Pinterest more and more. Since I’ve been updating it with new photos there people have been pinning my new shares. And yes, I’ve been using Akismet and CommentLuv together and they work good together. The moment I deactivate Akismet the more spam I get. So yeah it works perfectly great for me.

Glad you learned all these 5 new things. I have to check #4 and explore more later. Thank you for sharing all these wonderful nuggets with us. Have a great Monday!

    Hi Lisa,

What a great list of things you learnt 🙂

Yes, I had read about Pinterest Place Pins at Carolyn’s informative post and even tried it out – it surely is a great way to find out the exact location through the maps. Yes, I have heard about Janes DoSplash too earlier and it’s on my to-do list – bookmarked – something I need to join as well. I didn’t know about the posting time on LinkedIn, though I do get a lot of interactions when I put up my posts, which I think co-incidentally fall around the same time (my time zone!)

I still have to find out about the sponsored tweets and strip this blog tool – sounds interesting! And Matt Cutts would surely have his comments section fully loaded now 🙂

Thanks for sharing these with us. Have a nice week ahead 🙂
