Do you want your #emails and newsletters to dazzle your readers and get opened? I found this infographic that may teach us how to have that happen before we send that next email. The fourth quarter of the year is most important if you are selling online. Last year alone 144.8 billion emails were sent daily. Emails must still work if that many are being sent daily. It’s more of a challenge to have those emails opened now. The average open rate across all industrials is at 31%. That means 69% of emails are not even opened.

Emails today are still popular. People can now look at them via their smartphones and decide quickly which to delete and which to open. Some people like Matt Cutts are overwhelmed by the amount of emails received daily. Some people still only use only emails and not social media or other communication methods like texting.  Emails today are more complicated with the new Gmail tabs. Today when sending emails we must try to end up in our readers original inboxes vs the tab inbox that are called promotions or social. Not an easy task according to MailChimp. The best way is to tell your subscribers how to put your emails in their primary tab.

The word sale works better than save. Daily and weekly work better than monthly. People prefer weekly vs monthly emails. Something to consider when doing your calendar for Q4. Use some emotional words triggers to get people’s attention if it makes sense for your customers. Using numbers in a email subject line is good as it makes readers stop. Remember that everyone’s time is valuable and to give them something of value when sending emails. Don’t have them unsubscribe from your list! Make your emails short and to the point so readers don’t lose interest. Use the word YOU to keep them personalized and don’t forget to mention benefits of a product or service to make emails dazzle them.

Monday, Wednesday Thursday and Friday are the best days for most to send out their emails.  Weekends are the least days according to Experian Marketing. I found it interest since I’ve been receiving many emails on Sundays via big retailers. Have you been noticing when you get the most offers in your inbox?

Most experts agree 8 a.m. – 12 noon are the best times of day to send out emails. Of course if you are sending emails to other parts of the world where the time will vary from area to area so it may vary. Check where most of your readers are from and then implement your timing accordingly.

    Nobody likes to read mail on weekends but some people do look at Email if they are very enticing and have some solid content. I opened my Email box also on weekends to check which email is imp to read. Lisa your post is very well timed.

    Hi Lisa,

    Since I am working on building an email list, your post is very well timed for me!

    What is funny, I have several email programs and would you believe except for a very short
    reference to the title or subject being “catchy” or having a “hook” to get “them” to open the email
    not much information is provided.

    Most of the advice is to develop a relationship with your subscribers, don’t give them to many
    freebies and the worst thing said was to mail at minimum once a day, but ideally twice or three times a
    day in order to catch the ones with an overflowing email box who didn’t open your earlier ones.

    It takes about two days for me to unsubscribe from an authorized spamming…super salesman! 👿

    I may be late on reading this post but I’ll not be completely absent Lisa.

    144.8 Billion Emails sent daily? That’s astonishing. How many are read? 31% or something around 13.89 billion? that’s still a huge figure.

    The highest open rate I have had is 24 and the lowest is 6. Now these are the kind of post I love to help me get a better open rate. I wish for something above 50% :mrgreen:

    I love this post and, of course, the infographic that goes with it. It sometimes amazes me that, with so many emails sent (and received) they remain such an effective form of communication. (You’d think people would have a very jaded approach to something they receive so much of.) I’m wondering to what degree you’ve tried specifically the recommended terms above in your email subject line and what kind of response you’ve seen. It would be great if you could share any insights in the comment section on BizSugar for the benefit of our whole community.

    I knew this was going to be an awesome post! I’m with Tim in that I was surprised to see words like Free and Sale on the list of what not to use. And now I know which keywords to use on my subject line :).

    My list is slowly but surely growing and currently I’m sending a daily newsletter but I’ve been playing with the idea of sending a survey to see how often my subscribers would like to receive my emails.

    Very interesting Lisa.

    I read somewhere a couple of weeks ago that the best time to be on social media is Sunday but not for emails?

    I’ve just changed my blog update to Sundays as I plan to write more than once a week but only want to send an update once a week.

    I’ll see what happens but by the sounds of things, I may need to rethink that.

    I was surprised that the word free was a word not to use. I’ll definitely take that on board!

    Thanks for the great post Lisa I enjoyed it. You are right on the head line for anything is always key if you want anyone to read your email or article that is. When it comes to the best times for sending emails I have tried so many different times when send my newsletter I almost feel that sending it when most people don’t was working better. I am always trying to find ways to do things that no one else is doing. Sometimes that has turned out in my favor other times not so much. I’m still testing for the best time so far nothing stands out.

    I know one thing if I get any more email I am going to explode. I mean five to six hundred a day is insane. Everytime I feel I have it under control I seem to get a whole new group of people or advertisers that somehow get my email and away we go.

    I am now at the point where I only look at my email twice a day sometimes three but that’s rare. Everytime I go in there it’s hours before I come out. Lately I haven’t had time to read anything except client email and email from my classes and groups I teach. That in itself is enough to keep me busy for too many hours everyday.

    I even started forwarding 65% of my mail to my assistant now she is buried in emails. It’s a email world that’s for sure. I sure hope everyone else isn’t as swamped as I am. Hopefully some people are still read our newsletters. 😀

I do like the ones that offer specials on products that I do use. Sometimes though I don’t open them til past the expiration date 🙁 Then there is the filing of those emails too.     Hi Lisa, hopping over from Corina’s blog hop today! Great post. Subject lines and titles are tricky, that’s for sure. Though I am not an email marketer, I can say from the consumer end, emails that come in with “cheap” in the subject line don’t entice me to open them, and “free” makes me suspicious. However, on the flipside, “free shipping” gets me almost every time! So do “half price” and “sale”. Guess I’m always looking for a sale! Happy weekend.

    I agree, there is still a place for emails in marketing. Even though Social Media is improving in popularity, I am more likely to read an email. Social media moves very quickly ans you can miss a lot. With an email, it is there until you delete it, and have a better chance at being noticed.

    I did a quick survey recently. Having the word video or slide in newsletter title does increase the open rate! Maybe nowadays, most of us are working and thus, would prefer faster and shorter way for ‘reading’ emails?

    I have added notes to my list building plan based on your post 😀 This is some great data (You know I really wish I had my own data, but in the past, I never paid much attention to list building. But, when I did start building a list, I didn’t put enough effort into it).

    The length of emails is something I have to work out. Towards the end of my old blog, I had prepared a lot of emails (for an autoresponder series; never used it, as I ended up shutting down the blog). And I noticed that most of the emails I wrote were as long as my posts (I certainly don’t want that. I don’t read lengthy emails, then how can I expect my subscribers to do so?).

    Hey Lisa,

    Great share girl and boy are you right. Now I know that I’m not really selling a lot of stuff with my list but I learned to entice them to open your email and never just put the name of your post as your title. I also in the body of my email do my best to never really tell them what my post is about but once again entice them into being interested enough to come and check it out. Yep, most of my emails are about what I’m sharing and from time to time I’ll throw something else in there as well.

    Now this little trick along with building those relationships will get you a much higher open rate. Mine is anything from 57% to 75% although it has it’s moments as well.

    Headlines are my weakness I admit and I’m constantly working on this area so the days when I can’t pull anything creative out of my brain are the days it doesn’t get open as much. I’ve never been below 37% though so I’m not going to complain at all.

    Great information in this infographic and the statistics that you’ve shared. This use to be a weak point for me until I just learned to be a little secretive to get them interested and build those relationships so they’ll want to open your emails. Great combination girl.

    Great info, Lisa. I’ve done a few email campaigns for others and they have been a bit hit or miss. I know personally that I receive so many that you really do need to take the time to figure what will make you standout and not get lost in the crowd. I think once you can get them to open the newsletter and provide good value to them, then they are far more inclined to open up future email newsletters. Of course, the trick is to get them to open up the first newsletter!

    Hey Lisa,

    Very interesting post indeed. It’s good to know by industry standards that I’m on the right track. I’ll send anywhere between 2-3 per week but it’s nothing more than value based. I like how you mentioned that Monday, Wednesday Thursday and Friday are the best days to send out emails. I usually send out emails between 5am-8am. I’ve gotten pretty good responses that way. I’ve heard of marketers that will send one early in the morning. Segment the list later in the afternoon, and send another one to those who didn’t open! Yes, overkill in my opinion. I’ve known some marketers personally who will send 2-3 a day, nevermind per week or per month! As always, great article!

    I loved all that there was in it and what surprised me that people don’t like the words cheap and free, while they do like words like sales and half-price ( I know I love those too). Yes indeed, you need to be rather short in your newsletter and I realized that this time when I sent mine that was a little longer than usual.

    I didn’t know people prefer a weekly newsletter, I thought they didn’t like getting disturbed so often, so was sticking to twice a month – guess I should change that, and also make it a point to send it during the week – yes, weekends are to relax and no one would like to read mails that time 🙂

      Thanks Harleena. I was doing the research for my nursing uniform site and thought I would also share it with my readers here. I was surprised by some of it as well. The words and the timing. I was only sending monthly although I do ramp up for Q4. I need to work on one this a.m. now that this one is done 🙂 I’ve noticed some retailers sending me emails more than 1x weekly. More than 2x weekly is annoying to me if it’s always a sale. Actually there is one company that sends daily, a bit overkill if you ask me. Thanks for coming by Harleena and have a wonderful weekend.
