Will The Facebook Graph Search Change Social and Search?
Will the Facebook Graph Search be a Game Changer for Social Media and Search?
Yesterday Facebook announced their new Facebook graph search now in beta. You must sign up if you want to be one of the first to test it out. You can also watch a video by Mark Zuckerberg explaining how this new Facebook graph search will work.
What Can You Search for on the New Facebook Graph Search?
- Find people with similar interests to yours.
- Find restaurants, music and more through your friends.
- Find photos your friends took.
- Find photos you were tagged in.
- You can find people, places and things that were shared with you or those that you shared via Facebook.
What Will This New Facebook Graph Search Do?
It will help you to search for things, people, interests, photos and places more easily via Facebook and you would not have to go on to Google to search for these. You will find the “answer” on Facebook and not mere “links” as you would on Google. You could ask which friends like a particular restaurant for a recommendation. If what you are looking for can’t be found it will be sent over to Bing. (Ouch to Google).
What About Your Privacy on the New Facebook Graph Search?
Your own privacy settings determine what is searchable via the new open graph search. Facebook will also be rolling out new privacy features soon. If you come across photos of yourself that you don’t like you can ask the person who posted them to remove them. If you have photos that you shared publicly those could be found. If you only shared with your family, only they would find them via the graph search. You can visit your activity log to change your settings and manage what will show up in the graph search.
What Will This Facebook Graph Search Mean For Businesses?
If a business wants to be found via Facebook graph search they must have a page set up and be sharing information to be found. Businesses may consider advertising on Bing vs. Google as Facebook has 1 billion users that could be doing searches there.
What do you think of the new Facebook graph search features?

Informative Lisa!
I did hear about this change yesterday but never really knew all the details as well as you mentioned them here. I wonder how much it would really affect us, if we don’t really get deep into it. I for one am not too keen on making changes and remain happy with what we have presently on Facebook!
But this surely is useful for those who are wanting to look up new places or people. Nevertheless, I think we would learn more about it in the coming days or once we really give it a real try – isn’t it?
Thanks for sharing this with all of us.

Facebook is always changing and I don’t know if I like all this change so fast. I also heard they have a new android app to help manage fan pages that is separate from regular facebook pages. I have to check it out some more.

Hi Lisa
Great article. It’s pretty clear that Facebook only sees its users as “lucrative mountains of data”, eagerly selling us to what ever company. I understand that Facebook is a company, but each update shows to me that Facebook doesn’t really care about my private information.
Aashirya recently posted..Popular Alternative Fitness Trends for 2013
Hi Aashirya, yes I think they are really trying to find ways to monetize the site and I can’t blame them since they are a business. They are probably trying harder since they went public. Maybe they should have stayed a privately held company instead. Sometimes its all about the stock with public companies. It’s a shame really. Thanks for coming by and for your input.

Hi Lisa,
That’s a most awaiting feature of Facebook
Now Google gotta think more about using their social data and I’m sure the competition gonna be very fruitful. Well, one thing I’m looking for that how third parties gonna make use of social data in future.
As Facebook allows third parties to make use of their data, the privacy concern would be in the climax and sadly more people would not be aware of that. I hope it wouldn’t lead to more cyber crimes though
Let’s hope for good and especially it’s a great opportunity for SMBs.
You have a successful week there Lisa
Cheers…

Google ‘Caches’ data it finds – While the link users click goes away from Google, they download a copy of everything they find to their own servers for analysis. This can be accessed by the public (click the grey arrow that appears when you mouseover a listing, then click cached. The page that comes up is from Google, not the original site).
Thanks

This is where my left brain does a happy dance. Apps like Facebook Graph and the new mobile page manager send my left brain into happy-dance mode.

Interesting to see this move, good move FaceBook!
It is totally different from search, so we can`t expect it will replace normal search but yes it may affect to some extent, when I`m getting local information on FB why will I Google it?
I guess if Bing integrates it`s search feature on FB search box, then Google will be in danger.

Like most things that Facebook does I think the jury is still out. Until we can test it ourselves I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or not. I don’t necessarily care to have some of my personal information found in some searched but then again, I have mine privacy settings for friends only. So we’ll see how this goes.
Thanks for the heads up Lisa.

Fantastic post. As you know, Lisa, I’m not a big engager on Facebook. But I have been using it a little more recently (still use G+ significantly more) and have noticed some confounding changes. I’ll ask you about them offline because they don’t seem to correspond to the great info in this post.
Anyway, I love the “similar interests” feature and the ability to find friends’ restaurants and music faves. That’s one of the things that’s been getting me over there more often, actually. But the other change seems to only affect my business page on FB and it may be related after all, who knows?
Thanks for being my “go to” girl for all things social and Internet technical. You have taught me so much.
Thanks Samantha, it will probably work great for marketing. If you keep your own personal shares with family and friends it should only be searchable by them, but how about their friends too? Did you sign up for the beta? I did to check it out soon
If you haven’t, do today.

Hey Lisa,
Interesting, I had heard about this but didn’t know you had to sign up to use it.
It’s probably one of those things I wouldn’t use myself, but that might help more people to find the content we publish on Facebook, perhaps?
Also, did you know that “social and search” are wrong in your URL? They say “soical and searc”. Oops
Hi Ben, for the beta you have to sign up, it will roll out eventually to everyone. Yes, it would be helpful for your content (blog) on Facebook to be found. I did notice and tried to change it but it messed up URL so I’m leaving it alone. Some things are better left alone then to mess it all up. No? (My luck I’d take the whole thing down – LOL) Thanks for the input and coming by.
