Twitter Profile Updates and Google Changes

Twitter Profile Update

If you were online yesterday you may have noticed many changes coming fast and furious. The first one I noticed was that Twitter updated the profile look. I first caught a glimpse of it on Twitter and then received an email from them on how to go about changing yours. It’s a great new way of displaying your Twitter Profile.

Twitter profile updates

You can see how images are now displayed with various pictures you shared on Twitter. It may be time to start changing yours today. Also note how the text goes over the new Twitter Profile too. At first I had displayed Inspire to Thrive but then saw how the text played out and changed it. Play around with yours until you are happy with it. Those that do not change theirs by November will have a default gray image. (Doesn’t sound appealing!)

The Twitter profile images sizes are:

  • Twitter Profile Photo:  73 x 73 pixel image that represents your organization (you do this in your profile)
  • Twitter Header image: Upload a custom image 1252 x 626 pixels (you do this in design area under settings)
  • Twitter Background Image: You can still use background images like before. you can use same as header image or a different one. (also in the design area of Twitter)
Do you like the new Twitter profile look?

Google Updates

Then the Google updates came.

Again confirmed by Matt Cutts of Google. This appears to be a nice update that most people should appreciate. It should give more websites the chance to show up well on the search pages of Google and not just the top sites taking over page 1 with their various pages of the same website. Let’s hope! Matt is also taking questions for his next Webmaster videos.

The Buffer Update

The Buffer app announced new analytics available for their services on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. You will be able to see the number of clicks, re-tweets, shares, comments and reach that you get from using the Buffer. You know how much I love the Buffer. I use it almost daily. Are you using the Buffer?

Terms of Service

Many of the social sites have rolled out new terms of service including Stumble Upon, Ebay and a few more.

How have you been keeping up with all these latest updates?

  • I did hear about them Lisa!

But loved the way you clubbed them all into one post here. :)

I haven’t yet done the Twitter changes as I still need to work on the image. I guess they are also trying to follow something like what G+ Facebook FanPage have done where their pictures are concerned. And about the Google updates – I’ve sort of become tired of keeping track of them now. :)

    Thanks for sharing. :)

  • Hi Lisa,

I heard ‘em too dear :) Nice to see your new profile with new updates. I haven’t got those updates on mine yet, but hope it will roll out by November as you mentioned. Thanks for mentioning cover image sizes too dear :)

Also I have heard of Matt Cutts telling about how paid links affect on PageRank. That’s cool that now paid links don’t boost up PageRank too.

    Cheers…

Thanks Mayura, yes, you can start planning on your images now. Yes, paid links have been bad for many sites. I still get requests for them, unbelievable.

  • Ilene says:

OK, I had no idea about these changes on Twitter until I read your post. Thank you!

  • Lauren says:

As soon as I read your post, I headed over to Twitter and played with the background images. It’s addictive. Thanks for the great info. I’m eager to try out the other new stuff.

That’s cool Lisa but mine doesn’t look like that so I’m not sure how to change it. When I go into edit profile it still gives me the same options as always. I like the way yours is and of course if I sign into Twitter it’s not letting me so my profile how others would view it. Scratching my head here but will probably like the changes.

I am using Buffer and I’m growing to like it more and more each day. I love the analytics it’s giving me and also how many potential people are viewing my tweets. Very interesting stuff Lisa.

    Thanks for sharing this.

Keeping up with Google and Social networking sites is a very important task for any marketer and business owner. Learning which blogs and websites to follow to keep up with these changes and how you can benefit or be hurt by the changes can really make an impact on your traffic.

    Hi Lisa

I didn’t know about the changes in Twitter, Buffer or Google so thanks for pointing those out.

    Hi Lisa,

First of all, your new twitter profile look fantastic. I tried to fiddle with my banner image and it just came in grey. I have to find a better resolution picture to update it.

    Hi Lisa,
Just some great updates to fully fill out your business twitter account. Company logo in the header picture area. Great! I like the widget creator for a domain. People are starting to wake up @ twitter… lol

  • Elaine Griffin says:

I love the new Twitter changes! Not a huge fan of the gradient overlay, but I get why they are doing that.
I’ve just started using Buffer. I’m enjoying fiddling with it and I’m trying to decide if I should continue with the free version or upgrade.

    • Lisa says:

Hi Elaine. Yes it can make the words harder to read but I think its more pleasing. I’m.still using the Free version and still love it. Thanks for coming to comment.

  • david says:

Hi Lisa, I had not heard of Buffer before, I think those types of stats can provide some valuable insight into what is working and what is not.

Hi David, you must try the Buffer, my favorite tool! If you cannot be online for a while it’s a great way to still send out tweets, LinkedIn posts and FB posts. Love to know if you do try it and how you like it.

  • Hi Lisa,

I think that it’s going to look much better. I’ve never been a fan of Twitter page look thus far. I haven’t changed mine yet, I hope it’s not too difficult! Your page looks great!

    Hi Lisa,

Is it available outside of a smart phone? I am proud to say that I have avoided the smart phone craze so far and will continue to do so for the near future! :)

I value my down time and I don’t want to be tempted by a smart phone! LOL.

If there is a desktop version, let me know – please! It does sound like a powerful and interesting tool.

Yes, great on desktops. Google the buffer app or on this site to learn more. I cannot believe you don’t have a smartphone. I could not live without mine now. How you you manage your online stuff away from computer?

  • Corina Ramos says:

Thanks so much for sharing this! Your profile looks great. I’m gonna try playing around with mine in hopes I don’t mess anything up, LOL! Hope you’re having a great day!

  • Susan Condon says:

It amazes me how quickly we absorb all these new changes. It’s November and I’m finally getting to Twitter. Thank you for always giving us the head’s up! I’m having trouble trying to input a time to use for this post on Buffer. Here we go again!

    • Lisa says:

Hi Susan, it sure is amazing. But sometimes I do forget things I’ve learned prior and have to revisit my own information. This morning was making my new blog post image the featured image so it would show on the homepage. It is usually the first image I insert but I played around with it several times and it ended up not being. I found the featured image info on the right hand bottom and made the cat eyes the featured image and it was resolved. Sometimes things are easy and we overlook it. We make it harder :)
