Does Your Logo Make People FEEL Things?
A Logo That Can Make You FEEL Things
The other day I was walking through the city taking pictures of flowers for my nature blog and it go hot. I came across this Coke truck and it got me thinking and very thirsty. Can logo’s make you feel things? This one sure made me feel thirsty!
Imagine if your company or blog logo would make people feel things and act. A logo that makes people buy things from you. A design that could have more people donate more to your charity. An image that would bring you more visitors to your blog on a daily basis.
Can a logo be that powerful? Many can convey hidden meanings or messages. Images can make or break a brand. The graphic is made to represent a company and be recognized quickly.
Some that pack a punch:
- Coke
- Nike
- Apple (but does it make you hungry? )
- MacDonalds
- Starbucks
- Ford
- UPS
- Shell Oil
Most of the logo’s above are common well known brands. Is it the words or the images themselves that make these great logo’s? These designs are very simple yet effective. It may also be the amount of advertising they have done over the years to make these common household names and images. If you keep seeing the same image over and over again it is much more likely you will not forget it – even years later.
When designing your brand’s name think of simplicity. A simple design and name will be easily remembered. If a website has 3 or more words in it’s name do you think others can remember it quickly? If you could change your brands or blogs name would you do it differently?

What are you favorite brand logo’s?

Hi Lisa,
I like Apple’s logo (probably because I am huge fan of Apple) and Nike. I like the logos to be plain and simple, but yet they need to be creative and make me think. That’s how I remember them.
My logo makes me smile, that’s it (but that’s a good feeling)

Thanks Jens, yes simple is best. And a smile is even better
I think Apple, Nike, MacDonalds, Google and Coke are the most recognizable. For a logo design, less is more. As far my logo is concerned, maybe it should have been designed to emphasize my blog’s tagline instead of the name.

I would agree with your most recognizable. I like your’s – it does get my attention
Interesting post.! Mmm Diet Coke gives me a warm fuzzy for sure! I think I’m going to be more observant when I look around now. Great, another distraction. hehe

Hi Brenda, you don’t need any more distractions huh? LOL. Yes, it’s interesting to look around at them and see if they make you FEEL anything.
Product gives credit to logo
great post
Thanks Reeja for coming by and commenting.
Hi Lisa,
That’s sure does make thirsty
It’s “BRAND IMAGE” created in our minds… As a brand becomes more popular and if we get used to that, we tend to open for that as we see something related to that. As the time I don’t know Apple brand, the word Apple made me feel the fruit. But as I learn more about Apple brand, now it makes me feel about Apple iPhone and yeah, a silver apple next to that
I know some coke addicts, that a red color itself makes them wanna have a coke. Sounds strange, but it’s true.
Logo is the simplest and easily identifiable thing for a product. Better if it’s easy to identify and print in our minds at first sight
Sometimes I wonder of hidden stories in logos too
Very impressive and creative.
Cheers…

Hi Mayura, interesting about the Apple – I wonder how long it took people to associate that. Thanks for coming by and commenting on the logos.
Hi Lisa,
Yes – I do agree. A brand name and icon for that matter should be short and sweet, Easy to remember and easily connected visually with your business image and or type. This is crucial for having a user recognize the brand online and offline alike.
Hi Anton, easy to remember is key too. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Lisa!
i agree with you that logo feel something.i also like the brand nike, facebook and google etc.
thanks for sharing the blog.

Hi Lisa,
I didn’t know about your other blog and the pictures a so nice.
I’ve heard before of the power of logos and some of them have like a double hedge that’s supposed to speak to your subconscious such as FedEx for example which has got an arrow inbedded in the logo.
Thank you for sharing this thought provoking post

Hi Sylviane, That photo blog started just for fun. It’s a great diary for me too. Once my mom was at doctors and he wanted to know when she had pneumonia and I remembered the time of year and was able to get date from that blog. I bet many logos speak to our subconscious too! Thanks for coming by and commenting today.
I would probably change my websites name if I could. It makes no sense and no is ever going to remember how to spell it. But, it has been great for branding and SEO because there is nothing out there that even sounds similar. So, that works. I do need a new logo, I am thinking of investing some good money to have a nice professional looking one. It is totally worth it.
Susan Silver recently posted..When is it time for a Redesign?
HI Susan, an usual name is good I think. I also may change a logo for one of our retail sites. Been contemplating it which probably is why I thought of this post as I saw the Coke truck the other day. Thanks for commenting.
Hi Lisa
You are right the logos we are familiar with do get a response from us such as Pavlov’s dog. As long as the brand name doesn’t get a bad reputation it will remain in our conditioned brain with the desired response.
The moment it gets bad publicity it can fall from grace faster than a lead balloon. Great logos also need to be backed up with great customer loyalty. This all takes time and customer confidence in what they are selling. It needs to be good value for the price, consistence and good customer service. Unfair business practices, unfair treatment of employees and lack of customer service can soon destroy any respect people might have for a name brand.
Mary
Hi Mary, thanks for coming by and commenting. I like your analogy to Pavlov’s dog
Do you think if a brand gets bad publicity it should change it’s logo?
Coming back under a different disguise may work but if they know who you are, word will soon get out. You can fool some of the people for awhile. Had this guy who had a business that he used to be a bully and get companies to send him product and then never pay. He would send a truck in and order $100,000. The truck would be waiting and he would get on the phone and get obnoxious, the company would buckle and fill his truck up. He burns his bridges and then starts another company under a different name and does the same thing, with promises of paying. He even send payment, but it would bounce.
Reputation is huge, changing a logo for bad publicity might work, but better to lay low for awhile and regroup under new management with a whole new policy. Fix the problems and maybe the public will embrace the efforts.
Mary
I totally agree Mary that one must fix the problems first. That business sounded awful. A logo could not cover that for long. Thanks for coming by and commenting Mary.
Yes, sometimes I feel hungry seeing the McDonald’s sign.
But with other brands not related to food, I don’t really feel something, like an excitement or anything but when it comes to food, my mind is thinking extra ordinary things!
Hi Melly, I guess the logo is extremely important to food brands – maybe perfume too. Thanks for commenting.
I guess I’m in trouble Lisa because I don’t have a logo. How about my face, will that do? lol…
But seriously, I think that with the amount of advertising and the years a company has been around will help with their logos sticking in your brain. I mean if I see a McDonald’s logo I know which company it is but it’s not going to make me want to run out and get something at their place. Probably just the opposite.
I’m sure for some people if they love a company or product a lot they may be eager to act on it when they see the logo but for me, not so much. I’ll remember them though.

Hi Lisa,
Like @Melly, brands related to food/drinks sometimes make me remember I have to drink this or that. For us bloggers, I think simplicity is key. The more simple, the easier it is to memorize.
I just ordered a premium logo for my blog and the draft sent to me is quite interesting.
Hey Lisa,
I saw your post on Adrienne’s blog and it led me to your blog. The money the companies you listed above pay to keep their logos in our faces and how they make them relate to a feeling or mood is amazing. How you can watch a McDonalds commercial and instantly get hungry is crazy. Or how you saw the Coke truck and your mind registered “Thirst” I can’t wait until the day comes when my logo effects ones mind.
That will be the day! Thanks for this post!

Hi Lisa,
What an important reminder!
Your logo carries an energy which can absolutely inspire people to act on your calls…whether it is signing up for your list, subbing to your blog or sharing a post, a clear, simple appealing logo carries that kind of power.

Hi Lisa, Like Reeja siad, I think the brand makes the logo, not the other way around, for the most part. By that I mean non of the popular logos we see daily would mean a thing to us if they hadn’t spent millions getting it in front of us at every possible moment.
I actually spent a whole five dollars on my logo. lol I’m not crazy about it and I’ll probably change it one day. I mainly worry about someone showing up later saying I have taken their creation. It’s hard to trust a stranger on a $5 site and be sure they did.’t just lift it from another site.

Hi Brian, yes that’s my fear too with changing logo on one of the retail sites. Being sure it is not copied anywhere is key. I may use a photo to be safe. Thanks for coming by and commenting.
Versatility and flexibility are very important when it comes to logos. You should be able to put your logo on any medium, like on paper, and at different places. You should be able to use it everywhere. It should look good whether you render it in black and white or in color.
Excellent point Nolan that it should look good on any medium and in color or black and white. Thanks!
Hi Lisa,
Years ago – when the sips were made of wood and the men were made of steel – there were some experiments going on with subliminal messages, hidden in TV shows and movies. Research showed it works! The Coke brand is very well known by almost everyone and the brain makes that split second association Coke + Thirst = Yummie for your tummie.
A brand logo should be easy to remember. I like Think Spin’s logo. It’s appealing to the eyes, and very unique AND shows the ‘message it stands for’.
When you scan a list with hundred’s of message you scan the logo / avatars. NOT the names. The brain is very good at processing visual information. A NAME in text has to be read, then interpreted and that takes more time.
Hi Jan, so true that the text takes longer to read than a well known logo. It sure takes a lot of money too to advertise a logo to become so well known as Coke. Wouldn’t you love to have that budget for your blog?
I had a talk looong time ago with Sonia Winland from Logallot about branding and logo’s. A custom design will set you back anywhere from $50 to hundreds of dollars. Going ‘the el cheapo’ way could be enough for a custom logo design for a blog. There are some free services (DIY) but they don’t give a ‘professional looking’ logo. Google!
I doubt it’s the logo themselves that’s doing the work, Lisa.
It’s the marketing. The message that comes up with the logo. All of these companies have logos that are easily recognizable (Since we are exposed to them daily, through different means).
And it get stuck. Maybe with an emotional connection with our brain (most likely, since majority of the things we remember are due to emotional connections).
Interesting point Jeevan about it being the marketing. I guess they do go hand in hand. Thanks for commenting with that one
Hi Lisa,
I have to say Google as my favorite logo. I like how they always have a different design out. Its cute! Have you played that app game where you guess the logo? Its really interesting and it surprises me how many logos I could recognize and name. That’s how you know some logo’s can really imprint their image into people’s memory.
Melanie
HI Lisa…..
Logo is really very important when it comes to brand yourself (your business or blog or any business stuff).
Your logo should be
Attractive
Must tell a story about your product
create curosity to know more about it.

Gosh! I just looked at that Coke logo and it made me thirsty too!
I have so many favorite logos, that I can hardly name one as my favorite. I think more than the logo, it is the marketing and the ads that work on us. Because we learn to associate those characteristics with the logo itself!
It is my first time here! Hope to be here more often!

Thanks Hajra for coming by today and commenting. Amazing how the Coke logo does that, isn’t it?
I like Apple’s the most. One is because no matter how many times they tweaked it over the last 30 years, you still knew who they were and what they stood for. Everything else is a given because we grew up with it, but it was something I thought about recently with my own logo. Does it have any impact or does it even make sense? Then a friend tole me that look beyond the logo itself and figure out how to tell your “story” and this will make your logo come alive with everyone else.
Great point Sonia. I find your logo very relaxing and tranquilizing. Inviting to read your blog
I never thought about it that way. Thanks Lisa…
