Pet Social Websites – A Yes or a No?

Pet Social Websites

Have you ever heard of pet social websites? A friend of mine recently created a new pet social website. He is looking for some feedback and I thought you might have some fun with this and insights for him. It’s a website to have photos of your pets to share with others.

What made him start this website?

The idea for Look At My Pet came from my wish to share information about my dog Sid with friends and family.  We have so many pictures of Sid on our cameras, laptops, and in photo albums, as well as numerous stories about him, that I thought that he needs a Facebook page.

But then I thought there should be a pet social websites just for pets.  Every pet should have a page they can call their own.  With these pages, their owners can share stories, pictures, videos and post status messages on their behalf.  It offers pet owners the opportunity to give their pets a voice, allowing them to reveal their unique personalities. They can also customize their pages by choosing different features that will be made available to them on an ongoing basis.

What do you envision for it to grow into?
My hope is that Look At My Pet becomes a thriving online community for pets (and their owners).  One of the features we include is Pet Trading Cards.  A card is automatically generated for each pet that reflects (and links to) their web page.  Each pet can then build their own collection of cards, linking to other pet friend’s pages.
Do you accept any pets – not just cats and dogs on your pet social websites?
Any type of pet can have a page, as long as they are animals. I considered including pet rocks but thought that may be a stretch.
So what do you think of this new pet social website?  Sound like fun? Anything that could be changed?
Please share your thoughts with us.

Sounds kind of like Dogster. There are quite a few different all “pet” sites out there and years ago, I jumped right in. When I rescued Titan, I got into it a lil more but walked away from it and that’s when I started my own blog instead. There are good and bad to those sites imo, or maybe it’s just because I have a pit bull and people are very judgmental about them.

It’s a good concept and wish the new site lots of luck! I’m sure it will attract a lot of people! Good luck!

    Hi Lisa,

I like the fact that it’s dedicated for pets and while evolving on the web it can add more features as I see :) You know, social network for pets to create more awareness, buy and sell pets, offer products for pets ;) Cool things can happen there… As I guess, still Facebook pages do a lot in this scenario… However it needs to be unique from usual social networking sites and offer exclusive features to grab more user attention…

    Cheers…

  • Sounds wonderful Lisa!

I love the fact that even the pets can have their own page now. :)

My sister recently created a page for her dog and keeps updating his status with many things that he does all through the day, as well as his recent activities and pictures. In-fact he has a very large fan following. Whomsoever likes my sisters page, is sure to connect with him too. She is too much of a dog lover, but it’s nice that what she’s doing for him I think.

    Thanks for sharing. :)

I was a member of Dogster for the longest time. I think both my dogs’ pages are still up but I haven’t updated in a while. I think it’s a good idea for dog lovers but the majority of my family and friends are on Facebook so I put all my pics there. I would be willing to try it out though. It’s interesting to see how many other people have pugs as well..

  • I’ve seen so many animal lovers on Facebook who create Facebook profiles for their companions. I think a social pet site, wherever it is, can be a great creative outlet for folks who love animals!

This reminds me of the Talking Animals YouTube Channel, one of my favorite places online to go and take a “laugh break.” If someone could combine a social media platform with a YouTube Channel, add members’ YouTube videos to Playlists, run a Featured Video of the Day, and have contests and competitions, they could strike gold here!

As an aside: We have a LOT of pets, but only half as many as we did. They’re all aging out of our lives now that our daughter is grown! We suffered her rescue efforts from the time she was a little girl, and got to enjoy the pleasures of pets while she did all the work — until she moved out!

Michelle, I’ll have to check that YouTube Channel out, sounds like fun! Thanks for the suggestions too. Love the feedback. Rescued pets, how awesome. What a great way to obtain a pet by rescue. Does she still do that now that’s she’s grown?

I think it’s a great idea. Wish I had thought of it. What’s next? Pets on Twitter. @mutt Just dug a hole and buried the cat.

LOL Lauren, I once did see a Twitter account with a pet. Of course a human behind it but with intent to be a pet. Forgot the handle. May look it up again :)

There are tons of pet sites out there these days and some are getting bigger. The is Bark World conference that brings many pet bloggers together to meet other brands and network. I like your friends site and will create a page for my pups. Thanks for sharing this Lisa!
